YABU- and I was for the cap when it was first introduced, but it's now clear that it causes child poverty, without preventing some people from having unaffordably large families. Even before the cap. most people weren't having more than 2.

Holluschickie · 30/09/2025 20:45

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/09/2025 20:40

To where?

We've been high-rate tax payers for decades. Haven’t left, other than fairly short periods for work, because we love it here, it’s home. That means something.

Dubai, Singapore, Australia, SE Asia.
I am not fleeing either. But I know a lot of people with transferable skills are.

Hold on hold on hold on....

Why are we acting as if the choice is "kids in poverty or disabled people in poverty"? That's not the choice.

How about - allow sections of society to spiral down into poverty (with all the long term implications of that for the NHS and wider economy) OR - look at those who genuinely can afford to pay more and tax them.

There are huge numbers of extremely comfortable people in this country who could absolutely cope with paying more tax. Or whose kids could afford to pay more tax when they inherit their house. It's an area politicians are afraid to touch because people usually vote selfishly in line with their own fiscal interests and the voting population skews older and richer. But we have a collapsing NHS and sections of society in truly desperate situations. This includes working people. Hard working people, who would love the opportunity to work hard all their lives, be sensible and save and buy a house like generations before them. The contract of work hard = decent standard of living is totally broken.

Have you heard of Uravnilovka?

Google it. The USSR tried it.

It didn't work.

Some posters think you are a fool if you put effort into working. It sort highlights the problem quite eloquently.

No, but working more than 40 hour weeks and making yourself out to be a martyr is a tired and done thing on here.

BettysRoasties · 30/09/2025 20:46

What a terrible plan.

We already had things in place for pregnancy resulting from rape or baby 2 actually being baby 2 and 3.

If you cannot afford three or more children at the point of creating them above circumstances removed. Then don’t create more babies.

Yes I get it not the child’s fault but feckless parents are always going to be feckless the type who would let their child live in poverty and then keep having more still won’t spend the money right.

TopPocketFind · 30/09/2025 20:46

Brainstorm23 · 30/09/2025 20:44

I think they could have chosen a better example in their article. "The family was not able to get a cake or any presents for their youngest child’s birthday. They hoped the child would be too young to remember."

Ah..poor diddums..I didn't get a cake or any presents my entire fucking childhood!

Edited

Ah diddums for you too

It would lift 350,000 children out of poverty and mean 700,000 children are in less deep poverty.

Why bother if you can have someone pay for you, eh?

80smonster · 30/09/2025 20:46

Maybe they will axe UC instead? Something has to give.

@EasternStandard And have you got another about AI making up for the ageing population?

Another what?

Working 40 hours in any job should be enough to live on
Feel free to work more if you want more money.
But is should not be expected.

ToodleP1P · 30/09/2025 18:56

Working people get CB too

It’s not child benefit. It’s UC

UC covers a lot of legacy benefits.

The cap was always horrific. As someone who has fallen pregnant twice whilst on contraception absolutely no one should feel pressured to abortion because they'll be unable to feed the child. In this modern era in a wealthy western country, it's disgusting.
And the cap just entrenches poverty. As higher birthrate are linked to poverty. It makes the issues worse. Because those kids don't even stand a chance.

Really? I believe that people should be able to afford their choices and not rely on the state to support those choices. I have worked full time in a demanding job all my adult life and done shift work and managed 4 kids with a husband who has worked away majority of our 33 year marriage. I returned to work full time when each babe was 12 weeks old as mat leave was not much!

Possibly would have felt the same 35 years ago. At retirement now, just no. Home and the NHS are valuable.

As long as we have an NHS, obviously.

How is the economy “crashing”?

Admittedly, it’s not pulling up trees, but where’s your evidence that it’s “crashing”?

You’re joking? Read any newspaper today. A financial crash is imminent.

clipboardz · 30/09/2025 20:49

@Bilbo63 like you said we have years of data. But for whatever reason stuff people read about 30 years ago has stuck in their mind and they don't realise things have moved on.

Wages would have to rise and more social housing built - many people claiming UC are working.

THIS POLICY IS ABOUT INCREASING UC FOR THOSE WITH MORE THAN TWO CHILDREN

Ramdogs · 30/09/2025 20:50

TiredofLDN · 30/09/2025 19:27

If anyone is incentivized to have more children for an extra £102 a month with housing, energy and consumables costs as they are, I’d LOVE to see it. I spend more than that a week on wraparound care.

Point me to one study that proves CB incentivizes pregnancy? And more pertinently one that proves it incentivizes pregnancy in this economy?

The £ you quoted is child benefit, this is NOT subject to a 2 child cap. They are proposing to scrap the 2 child cap on Universal Credit. Roughly an extra £290 per month for each child. Generally for the unemployed or those on low earnings. I wish the news would get this across properly so you could understand why this is unfair.

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/09/2025 20:50

(Have you been to Dubai and Singapore? The heat excludes them for me. Bloody awful)

Barney16 · 30/09/2025 20:51

Children shouldn't live in poverty. It's disgraceful but how on earth will it be paid for? If taxes go up then I think it's the death knell for labour. I have a sneaking suspicion that most people who are definitely on board theoretically with a reduction in child poverty will be very very pissed off by less take home pay.

But thats their parents job - not strangers who work full time for a living being taxed to the hilt.

No, not true. All that will happen is government will be able to say that families aren't living in poverty look how much we've helped!!! Meanwhile the reality is children will still live in poverty and the parents will drink/smoke/gamble spend money on themselves. These people are feckless. They won't suddenly become more responsible parents because they are given more money for free that they haven't earned. Poverty begets poverty. Benefits spent in this way doesn't change the poverty cycle.

Mexicantortilla · 30/09/2025 20:51

Whitesapphire · 30/09/2025 18:48

If she does that and raises taxes again it will be the end for Labour.

I think it’s the end for them anyway, I think RR nov budget will be a malicious swan song

Nestingbirds · 30/09/2025 20:51

Maybe Labour are trying their utmost to be forced out??
