@EasternStandard but where is the evidence that AI is going to "save" the west? I'm interested, everything I have read is very uncertain how much impact it will have on jobs/productivity.

but the we must push up birth rate doesn’t need to keep going.

I have not argued for that, I have repeatedly said this policy won't increase birth rates so I'm confused why people think all of sudden there will be a baby boom because of this policy.

It’s encouraging entitlement, recklessness and shitty parenting.

Oh come off it, you can’t raise a child on £17.25 a week

clipboardz · 30/09/2025 20:24

So basically we are putting the disabled into further poverty so Betsy down the road can pop out 3 more kids for benefits.wtf

Do disabled people not have dc?

ProcrastinatorsAnonymous · 30/09/2025 20:24

Perhaps (*whisper it because this is Mumsnet...) we could tax wealth as opposed to income, and grow some balls about inheritance tax.

Mirrorxxx · 30/09/2025 20:24

Benefits need to be cut not increased. I do not think I would vote labour again

Unfortunately there are people out there who will jist have another kid for benefits. I can see a lot of families struggling for money having more children for extra income. Its sad but its true we had this before the 2 child cap.

ILoveLukeAlderton · 30/09/2025 18:48

But like so many things we can’t actually afford it! Yes there’ll be some people who are unlucky with contraception but as someone who only had one child because I knew we couldn’t afford a second I don’t want to pay for others to have as many as they like without the same consideration.

This. Most people who have more than 2, have made the conscious decision to do so. The country is on its knees. She will be telling us all she needs to raise our taxes in November.

YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT CHILD BENEFIT. THIS IS ABOUT UNIVERSAL CREDIT NOT CHILD BENEFIT.

Its £292 a month (£3500 a year)

Yes but they are severly cutting disability benefits it was all their big idea to save this country money just to give it to people who want more than two kids? It makes no fucking sense.
Give it to the NHS, give to councils to build more affordable housing by all means but to cut one benefit just to increase another benefit is madness.

I haven’t posted ‘baby boom’ you have. I’m responding to posts that comment on the birth rate dropping.

ToodleP1P · 30/09/2025 20:26

I honestly do not think that people having more kids that they can't afford is costing the country real hardship. From what I have read, we need more people to have kids and not less.

clipboardz · 30/09/2025 20:26

Some disabled people will benefit from this policy though

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/09/2025 20:26

Sowthegarden · 30/09/2025 20:16

That’s the Higher Income benefit charge, which has no effect on the benefit cap.
The charge is a tax on the higher earner.

I would prefer the cap to stay and give poorer families the help in other ways.

Edited

Oh ok, fair enough. Long time ago.

Who is entitled to that?

Bumblebee72 · 30/09/2025 20:26

ToodleP1P · 30/09/2025 20:13

Hmm, nurses start at £31k, and not all of the want to go up through the ranks.

Edited

Exactly. There aren't many professions where people go straight to be net contributors but most teachers and nurses do after a few years. Even it they don't progress through the ranks they'll get yearly experience increments. A teacher outside of London with no management responsibility will be a net contributor after 6 years, which out of a 40 year career is pretty fast.

According to some on MN, disabled people should NOT be having kids at all.

clipboardz · 30/09/2025 20:27

It isn't, hence why I support the policy. It's lifting dc out of poverty, if millions used to have lots of additional dc then I would be wary but that isn't going to happen.

user927464 · 30/09/2025 20:27

ToodleP1P · 30/09/2025 20:26

This is the additional tax free amount that a parent on universal credit would get for each additional child.

NaranjaDreams · 30/09/2025 20:27

dottiehens · 30/09/2025 19:40

Those kids will go on welfare as their parents did.

I didn’t.

My mum had more children to get more money. She didn’t want any of us when she found out we were girls. I’m not sure she really wanted any children anyway, to be honest, but she loved the idea of a boy.

I’ve never claimed any benefits, except child benefit which we save for them.

There will be plenty of kids who don’t escape the generational poverty trap but there are plenty who do, too. There’s a few of us on this thread.

I’m on maternity leave right now but before that, I was a higher rate tax payer, too…

Ratherhavefreedom · 30/09/2025 20:27

Dont have kids if you cant afford them or the ones you already have.
But if UC goes up if you have more babies.
We will see a rise in birth rates for sure.
I dont have kids and thankfully, but i feel as a single childless woman im at the bottom of the pile because i dont have kids to make me a priority.
Yet i work from 40 to 60 + hours a week to pay tax just to pay to raise other peoples kids thats what it feels like.
If people have more kids just for more UC money will tax go up because im just about keeping a roof over my own head.

Tbf, quite difficult to raise a child on that as well.

VimtoIcePop · 30/09/2025 20:28

MidnightPatrol · 30/09/2025 18:49

I’m conflicted.

Children shouldn’t live in poverty. It’s not their fault they are in that situation. Studies show when not in poverty, their outcomes are better.

But… most households now are making difficult decisions around family size because of affordability.

So - i am not sure it’s right to give unlimited benefits to the family with seven kids who could never afford it, while the dual-working household with a mortgage have had to stick to one because they don’t feel they can sensibly afford another.

Pretty much my thoughts. No child should grow up in poverty but we don't want to be paying for people who've never worked popping out five kids.

Nestingbirds · 30/09/2025 20:28

ProcrastinatorsAnonymous · 30/09/2025 20:17

Good. No child should live in poverty in this country - whether you agree the parents should've had more kids or not. Those saying the country cannot afford it are absolutely right - the wealthy are not paying anywhere near enough tax, and that needs to change. [I say this as someone who would be paying the increased taxes]

You don’t think 45% is ‘anywhere near enough’? 😳

Are you determined to see every high earner stop work/move overseas/ work part time which will strip the country of even more money??? Honestly.

Fangisnotacoward · 30/09/2025 20:28

I thinkit would be better use of the money this would cost to fund breakfast clubs and after school child care with meals.

I agree, no childcare should live in poverty, but I think focus should be on supporting children via properly funded school schemes.

But a lot of people will never be net contributors at all. Ever. Are they not allowed kids?
