Changing nappies on airport seats

KittyCoo · 30/09/2025 12:57

I don’t have any DCs yet and not planning on ttc for a few years.

I was at a mallorca airport last and the plane was about to board abd a lady changed her around 4/5mth old baby’s dirty nappy on the passenger seats. I told her that was disgusting and people have to sit there to use the bathroom opposite as there was a changing table in there. admittedly there was a big queue but not the point imo.

When I have DCs, I’d never dream of doing that, I’d always use the facilities provided in the vicinity as respect and courteousness to others. I personally believe it’s lazy parenting not to use adequate facilities available!!!

AIBU, that some parents with babies these days think they’re so entitled just like the one I’ve described above ? And AIBU for berating her actions the way I did ?

If the Mum had a mat she could have found a corner and put the baby on the floor on the mat, if she thinks matbis so clean and not covered in bacteria, not used a seat someone will sit on.

BeLilacSloth · 30/09/2025 22:05

I really wonder what the poor mother said back to OP, I bet it was really embarrassing (for you) to have a go at a struggling mother with a baby and everyone around you was probably thinking wtf is her problem

KittyCoo · 30/09/2025 22:09

@DrowningInSyrup @CheeseWisely i was just interested in other people’s opinions and wanted to vent. I was prepared to be told AIBU bit in a softer way rather than saying you’re not a parent you don’t understand, which is making me feel like crap because what others have suggested that me using a bathroom to change a nappy is wrong. If you read my PPs aboot my Crohn’s, I never berate my friends for saying to me when I decline an invite for a hike in the woods when come on you’ll be ok but in reality I worry aboot getting caught short!! What others have said about me on this forum is like me saying to my friends in that situation, you don’t have Crohn’s so you don’t understand!!!!

I agree with you OP, it’s disgusting and more people should say something. I judge people who do this.

Yes I am a parent and never in a million years would it enter my brain to change a nappy on an airport seat.
Ive encountered my fair share of poo explosions etc with my child and sometimes had to result in changing her in the back seat of the car.

I never understood changing a nappy in the middle of your livingroom either, people said when I’m a parent I would change my mind.Nope, I’ll go upstairs where away from the living area and easy access to the bathroom to wash my hands!

Finally another parent who is sensible and considerate!!! And well done for sticking to your gut feelings pre parenting, takes some willpower for sure

Don’t be silly. By the time you found a staff member to dob her into it would have been done and dusted. What are they going to do, put her on a No Fly list?

Edited

I read that as the mother finding a member of staff to say "I need to go and change the baby's nappy. Please don't let the plane go without me!"

CheeseWisely · 30/09/2025 22:12

@KittyCoo Well a more similar analogy would be if you did get caught short in a stressful situation and a random stranger popped up and berated you publicly for being disgusting, rather than asking if you were ok or needed any help.

Don’t you have a kitchen to wash your hands in? Confused

CoreyTaylorsbiggestfan · 30/09/2025 22:13

It’s also the fact she’s changed a dirty nappy in a public place and not washed her hands! It’s disgusting!

CoreyTaylorsbiggestfan · 30/09/2025 22:14

@CheeseWiselydo you go the the toilet in your livingroom?

KittyCoo · 30/09/2025 22:18

@CheeseWisely its @CoreyTaylorsbiggestfan living room, not free for all!!

@CheeseWisely I’ve had people upset me before as I’ve been in the disabled loo during a flare and it’s really upset me. Despite apologising and expplaining the person in the wheelchair wouldn’t accept it and that’s when o loose my patience when someone won’t accept my apology. Maybe that’s why I get defensive like this

Not in my bedroom either. Do you always change your baby in your bathroom? Fair enough if you do I suppose but I’ve never encountered anyone else that does. That’s why there’s a market for changing tables.

Edenmum2 · 30/09/2025 22:19

I have no idea what the issue is - she had a changing mat - no contents of the nappy is going on any seats so the worst is putting up with a smell for a few seconds.

are you people - on a PARENTING site - so completely out of empathy that you can’t forgive a mum of a four month old on a flight (let’s face it one of the most stressful places to be with a baby) changing a fucking nappy?! On a changing mat? Rather than waiting in a massive queue?

You don’t have children OP so you might not know that babies bottoms can get sore extremely quickly. And with baby girls if the poo is loose and stuck in a nappy it can travel into the vagina or the urinary tract and cause infections. I’d be asking her if she needed any help, but well done OP for making a new mum feel like shit.

CoreyTaylorsbiggestfan · 30/09/2025 22:25

@CheeseWiselyNope never in my bedroom either.
I had a changing table in bathroom, much easier as at waist height and everything accessible.

Congratulations on having a big enough bathroom for that.

Further congratulations for having immediate access to hot running water and soap for every nappy change you’ve ever done. You can’t go far from the house is all I can imagine.

SL2924 · 30/09/2025 22:34

I doubt you’ll change your mind when you are a parent, OP, because what she did is utterly disgusting. I have a child and would never do this. People seem to have lost all social boundaries. It is not neglect to wait in the queue for the toilet. Well done for telling her off- she deserved it 😃

that's an utterly deplorable comment. Well done?
Are you kidding me? You seriously think is grand to berate a stranger in an obviously difficult situation?
Christ almighty.

One. Hundred. Percent. 👏

I've put a receiving blanket down on the bed and changed both of my babies on it many times.

KittyCoo · 01/10/2025 10:38

@Edenmum2 @Mumtobabyhavoc equally you are both saying it’s ok to shout @SL2924 down for doing the right thing and reinforcing politeness and social boundaries??? If so then why????? That’s where standards are slipping these days. All this lady needed to do was go to the bathroom and explain I’m using the baby change not cutting the queue, surely everyone would’ve been understanding then? If not words fail me becaese social consecration has gone thesss days!!!! I didn’t make her feel like shit, but she’s overstepped a boundary and she needs to know social rules still apply to her just because she’s a new mum!!!! And also, as you’re berating me, I cluld equally say to you well done for making me feel like shit 😂😂😂 throw it back at you

@Edenmum2 why should strangers have to put up with a sticky nappy smell whilst having a coffee?? Yes I understand babies have delicate skin but as @SL2924 says changing straight away by heading for the bathroom is not neglect!!

@SL2924 you sound like a wonderful respectful mum and I’m sure you’ll child will grow up with respect and kindness for others.

But it's your own car, and only you have to sit on the seat afterwards.....

Still. I wouldn't have berated her. I couldn't do that. It could have been a leaking nappy and worse to take that on the plane than make a quick change. I highly doubt it's something this mother does regularly. And she used a mat so it wouldn't affect anyone sitting on a seat at a later date. It's a tiny baby.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/10/2025 15:33

IneedtheeohIneedtheeeveryhourIneedthee · 30/09/2025 13:37

She is a skank. No excuse. Airports have plenty of baby change (and more importantly HAND WASHING) facilities.

Jesus Christ, bloody harsh to call a mother that WHO IS LOOKING AFTER HER BABY.

Check yourself.

llittledoveblue · 01/10/2025 15:39

Good luck when you have kids OP!

I hope you remember berating this woman when you’re a parent and you experience moments like this. As you said, the plane was about to board so she probably didn’t have time to change her child in the airport. The queue for the toilets was too long for her to make her child wait and sit and a dirty nappy.
a baby nappy on a plane will be a tiny percentage or the germs and bacteria you will come across while on board.

have a day off.

Frankly, you had the bloody audacity to berate a mum looking after her child in a difficult situation. Small baby. Did you once stop to wonder what she was going through? Did she have ppd? How was she coping? Had she slept? Did she need help?
The better social standard is to keep your mouth shut if you don't have anything nice to say. I can't believe you're defending your deplorable action. You take the cake, lady.

And not to mention, a dirty nappy creates a screaming baby. Even worse for the mum to cope with that. On a plane.

Aitchemarsey · 01/10/2025 15:46

If the plane was about to board, how would she have had time to queue and then change the nappy? Which often takes a number of minutes? To then be rushed onto the plane as the last passengers and find there's no space for luggage?

I feel stressed just thinking about it. Best of luck with your future kids, I'm sure they'll never do anything inopportune like poo at the wrong time.
