Changing nappies on airport seats

KittyCoo · 30/09/2025 12:57

I don’t have any DCs yet and not planning on ttc for a few years.

I was at a mallorca airport last and the plane was about to board abd a lady changed her around 4/5mth old baby’s dirty nappy on the passenger seats. I told her that was disgusting and people have to sit there to use the bathroom opposite as there was a changing table in there. admittedly there was a big queue but not the point imo.

When I have DCs, I’d never dream of doing that, I’d always use the facilities provided in the vicinity as respect and courteousness to others. I personally believe it’s lazy parenting not to use adequate facilities available!!!

AIBU, that some parents with babies these days think they’re so entitled just like the one I’ve described above ? And AIBU for berating her actions the way I did ?

@Mumtobabyhavoc i should’ve mentioned my potential ASD diagnosis earlier on.

i appreciate you being more understanding now that ive explained. I wish I wasn’t query ND and I think being that way causes me to see the world as an injustice that not everyone understands

I feel the same and I'm, apparently (?), NT! 😁

FWIW, no women/mother/parent should feel vulnerable to harassment or abuse when attending to their children. We deal with enough anxiety about their needs as it is. iykyk. You do what you need to do for them.
Hopefully, with luck, you'll get to experience all of this including the many joys. 💕

But she would have been changing the nappy in front of people if she had gone to the toilet too. There's often not a separate cubicle.

In a WC/cloakroom! No one is suggesting it's wrong to change a baby on a changing table in the facilities provided.

Mademetoxic · 01/10/2025 20:42

Pikachu150 · 01/10/2025 17:39

I think it's fine if she used a mat. The seat itself isn't going to get contaminated so what's the problem?

But then she wouldn't have washed her hands surely if she wasn't near the toilets? Then touching everything in sight 🤢
Hand sanitiser isn't as good as washing with good soap and water.

hulahooper2 · 01/10/2025 20:46

disgusting, saw someone do it on a restaurant chair outside toilets in tenerife airport , then left dirty nappy on the floor ,,staff shouted at them but were ignored

KittyCoo · 01/10/2025 21:52

@Mumtobabyhavoc how funny lol!

yes I understand you have to worry about whether a double pram will fit into a lift etc and have I come out with enough nappies etc!

Hopefully I’ll have the good and the bad to come but for now me and DP are just enjoying being a unit

@hulahooper2 that was 100 times worse and rather grim 🤢

You realise a really significant proportion of people literally never wash their hands after going to the loo, right? And OP realises most seats in public places are covered in faecal bacteria from people's shoes, etc? I'm a massive germophobe and I would never consider berating a stranger for something like this.

This whole thread is nuts; I hope I never cross paths with lots of the women here.

Jesus Christ, bloody harsh to call a mother that WHO IS LOOKING AFTER HER BABY.

Check yourself.

She could quite easily 'look after her baby' in the baby changing facilities which would have been provided in the airport. And then washed her hands afterwards. Like all of us non skanky and hygienic parents do.

Sprogonthetyne · 01/10/2025 22:29

Glowingup · 30/09/2025 14:10

That's absolutely pathetic of the mum though. You can't let your kid shit in a potty in a public building that other people use. You just can't. Nobody cares that she's potty training - she has to make sure to carry spare clothes and wait for the toilet to become free and then deal with whatever mess has resulted. Bursting into tears isn't a get out of jail free card - she behaved disgustingly and obviously planned for this and thought it was okay.

You'd rather the shit be in the kids pants then in the potty? It's going to smell either way and if it's a runny one, could well be dribbling down the trouser leg onto the floor. Not to mention how unpleasant it would be for the child to be covered in shit while waiting for the toilet to become available so they can be cleaned up.

Fortunately I've never been in that position (stayed close to home until they could hold it) but I don't think carrying spare cloths and making the kid shit themselves is better then using a potty.

I think we are all aware that there are people with different hygiene standards , but the difference is do you know that your standards are lacking?
Like the guy that doesn't wash his hands after using the bathroom but doesn't see this as a big deal - versus - the guy who doesn't always wash their hands but knows its wrong ?
Some people don't know, because they were never taught, and we are all too polite to say anything.

The OP may be a bit abrupt is brave to point it out.

No, it was extremely rude to "point it out." No bravery whatsoever.

and what would the overriding reason be for her 'not being able to'. CBA to walk from where she was to the baby changing facilities?
The view is great. Up here I can't be approached by skanks who change nappies in public and don't wash their hands.

I used to have a change mat and wipes with me at all times.

Yes, at ALL times. Every single time I left the house with my kids. Yep. Always.

In such a situation, if I couldn't get in to the loo, I'd have found a quiet corner of the room, away from chairs and people watching, put the mat on the floor, done a quick change there and then, discreetly and away from other people having to watch. Nobody should have to tolerate being exposed to your kids' shit covered arse.

If it was just wet, same deal. Nobody wants to smell or see your piss covered nappy either.

There are no circumstances at all where changing a shit covered arse in public on a public seat that others need to sit on is acceptable, necessary or should be tolerated.

But Ma Babeeeeeeeeee doesn't cut it I'm afraid. You're right, she should not have done this.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 01/10/2025 22:58

I think when you have kids you might think differently. I agree it’s a bit gross but she probably didn’t want to miss the plane as the queue was long. She used a mat and was quick. There are worse things to get upset about.

I wouldn't worry OP. Some people's hygiene standards are just very low and their sense of entitlement is very high.

It is, of course, grossly unhygienic, it also makes a lot of people feel like vomiting. I felt the same way when I changed my friend's boys' nappies. Your own generally doesn't make you want to throw up, but other people's childrens' nappies can genuinely make people want to heave.

There's no excuse for it. At all. Doesn't matter if you've had ten children or none.

You're right, she was wrong.

Calling another woman a skank is so unpleasant. You just fell squarely off your high horse and landed in it's feces.

RoseAlone · 02/10/2025 02:31

Why would you do that? No matter what you thought it was none of your business and she was doing nothing wrong. I pity any future children of yours.

Casuallydressed · 02/10/2025 02:48

Bore off OP, and all the others backing you up. They’re either not parents, parents lucky enough to have never had a stressful accidental toilet situation happen or have very short memories. If there hadn’t been a queue and the plane wasn’t boarding, I still wouldn’t have said anything as it’s none of my fucking business. She wasn’t smearing the shit everywhere - she used a change mat and it’s a tiny baby.
You should be embarrassed by your behaviour. I’d keep my mouth shut in future, unless you were offering some genuine, non patronising help not disguised as a dig.

BeLilacSloth · 02/10/2025 03:03

OP maybe you should look back on this thread the next time you want to have a go at someone in future, your replies, excuses and general nastiness towards others is embarassing. Good luck out there in the real world.

Really glad to see that most of these commenters get it. Manky, dirty, anti social and unacceptable behaviour.

Normal parents don't behave like this, we managed just fine not being filthy, anti social arseholes in public.

Again, you are right. She was wrong. Inarguably.

ohdearmemummy · 02/10/2025 04:44

You shamed her. Whether she was wrong or right, you were far worse. You have absolutely no understanding about what led her to make that derision. You HAVE NO CLUE the pressure she may have put herself under before that flight, whether her baby was not well, not settled, the facilities available may have been gross, she may have been up all night (likely) and thought she only had a short time to get on the flight. You are not a parent (yet) but if you feel comfortable shaming others like that then perhaps you should consider whether or not parenting is for you.

Shame on you.

she used mat. She did her best. Smelling a baby poo is no worse than some disgusting people who chose to fart next to others.
