Changing nappies on airport seats

KittyCoo · 30/09/2025 12:57

I don’t have any DCs yet and not planning on ttc for a few years.

I was at a mallorca airport last and the plane was about to board abd a lady changed her around 4/5mth old baby’s dirty nappy on the passenger seats. I told her that was disgusting and people have to sit there to use the bathroom opposite as there was a changing table in there. admittedly there was a big queue but not the point imo.

When I have DCs, I’d never dream of doing that, I’d always use the facilities provided in the vicinity as respect and courteousness to others. I personally believe it’s lazy parenting not to use adequate facilities available!!!

AIBU, that some parents with babies these days think they’re so entitled just like the one I’ve described above ? And AIBU for berating her actions the way I did ?

Very well said!!

i think some people are missing the point. The point of my post was saying if/when I have DC, I’ll be in the camp of the parents who have already said they wouldn’t change a nappy in a public seating area and use adequate facilities available. And also, I’ll be a parent who thinks social etiquette also applies to me

Edited

That’s the point you think you made. What proportion of the people who wouldn’t change their child in a public seating area, would also think it’s their place to confront someone doing it? If I had been there I probably would have thought ‘that’s a bit grim’ of the nappy situation, but I would have judged you much more harshly.

You may well never change your future child in a public seating area, but perhaps you’ll make some parenting choices you never thought you would or that others will disagree with. When you’re in a stressful situation and exhausted after surviving on 5 broken hours of sleep for months, I hope someone shows you more kindness than to berate you for something they think you’re doing wrong.

@123GiraffesandCrocodiles if she had made the effort to do the right thing, as I said in my PPs and seen her struggling, I would’ve lent her my radar key or let her go in front of me to change the dirty nappy!! But as she didn’t speak up so to speak, it was too late for me to intervene with the above!!

@KittyCooWhy would she speak up to you specifically? Were you sat on the seat she was using? Or did you want her to stand up and announce it to the whole gate?

KittyCoo · 30/09/2025 20:25

@CheeseWisely she was sitting in the row behind me and I just happened to get up and see her doing it. Or there was nothing stopping her from going to the toilets

But there was. There was a massive queue and she was about to get on a flight.

@FanofLeaves I think we’ve just gone round in a full circle back to my original post

Haha, the thought that you'd just ask your OH to change the nappy because there's never a queue for the men's 😂

Rubbish of you to berate her. Really horrible actually. I hope you look back and cringe when you've got kids.

YaWeeFurryBastard · 30/09/2025 20:55

You were horrible and as others have said, you have no idea what you’d actually do in that situation as you don’t have kids.

Maybe some people have lower standards for their children’s care but I’d never let one of mine sit in a poo nappy for the 45mins+ it takes to board and take off. I’d do everything possible to avoid changing mine in public like that as it’s not great at all, but you say there was a queue and this poor woman may have been worried she’d miss her flight.

Also lots of babies won’t feed in a dirty nappy, which they need to on a plane to help their little ears, would you honestly rather a young baby was in pain with a dirty nappy than a quick change using a mat? Have you ever actually changed a poo nappy? It’s perfectly possible to do it without getting poo anywhere.

Since you’ve decided to drop feed about your condition, why didn’t you say “excuse me I have a radar key if you’d like to borrow it” instead of being nasty to a new mum.

If you become a mum yourself you will learn how horrible and upsetting it can be when you feel like you’re being judged for doing your best for your child and you will probably feel deeply embarrassed about what you did.

Show a bit of kindness next time or you might come across someone like me who’d have told you to fuck right off and judging by your responses it seems like you can dish it out but not take it!

I guarantee you won't let your dc sit in poo in order to appease others' comfort.

KittyCoo · 30/09/2025 21:03

@YaWeeFurryBastard ive changed my niece and nephews and o used to work in a nursery so changed more than my fair share and other people’s DCs

If that’s how you want to treat me fine, and if people are horrible to me, I soon stand my ground as you can see here 😉I don’t go down without a good fight. All in all two wrongs don’t make a right

@Athreedoorwardrobe @Awobabobob yes babies go at the most unpredictable times and not once in my post am I blaming the child!! What me and OH said between us, if that had been us in a few years, I would’ve asked him to have changed the nappy (never a queue for men’s loos) and I would’ve explained to the staff at the gate what’s happened! Surely that’s just common sense right ?

Edited

Hahaha you have no idea what it’s like. Wait until you become a parent and then you’ll realise that sometimes you just have to crack on with things like this.
I would never allow my baby to be changed in the men’s - they are disgusting. I also would not miss my flight due to waiting in a queue for the facilities. Get off your high horse and mind your own business. Didn’t affect you.

I can’t see that here, I just see you having a strop and calling people offensive because they are calling you out for being nasty to a mum of a young baby 🤷🏻‍♀️. You need to grow a thicker skin if you actually are going to say things like this to people in public.

Goldfoxwife · 30/09/2025 21:08

I mean that is pretty gross to do it their

pteromum · 30/09/2025 21:12

I’m going to go on a personal wording rant.

to use the expression WHEN I have DC whilst calling someone else entitled, is all that stands out for me.

thank you

themerchentofvenus · 30/09/2025 13:06

One day when/if you have kids, you will regret criticising that woman.

Disagree, it’s just gross - you find a proper way

KittyCoo · 30/09/2025 21:13

@Mumtobabyhavoc i wouldn’t leave my future child in a soiled nappy to appease others no but i respect that strangers wouldn’t want to witness a nappy change whilst having a coffee, or reading the paper!! The world doesn’t revolve round me or this woman quote frankly!!!

@YaWeeFurryBastard im not calling people offensive, im just reminding them of what it’s like to have manners!!!

@tellmesomethingtrue what if it’s a two dad family??????

OP posts:
PropertyD · 30/09/2025 21:13

Last year in the seat row behind me a women waited until the complete stranger went to join the queue for the toilet and proceeded to change her baby on HIS seat.

A bit rich of you to remind people to have manners when you yourself have shown you have none.

Good manners would be offering to help the lady to go somewhere suitable (especially given you have a radar key) or at worst saying “excuse me would you mind using the changing facilities”, not kicking off and calling her disgusting.

AutumnCosy2025 · 30/09/2025 21:17

KittyCoo · 30/09/2025 13:07

It was dirty yes abd she used a changing ma abd was quick!! I’m not blaming the child for one moment, it was her attitude to think airport seats were the bathroom!! Yes I understand with young children you have to act quickly but it’s about being considerate to everyone else in the vicinity

She used a changing mat, so what exactly was the problem??

IF you're ever a parent do get back to us with your perfect parenting.

she probably thought she didn't have time to go to the 'facilities' before boarding the flight but wanted to change the nappy so as not to inflict it on the passenger(s) sitting next to her.

its a tiny baby being changed - get a grip.

KittyCoo · 30/09/2025 21:22

@YaWeeFurryBastard since when have I shown no manners, I did say in my OP there were adequate facilities in the toilets in the vicinity

@PropertyD that’s revolting 🤢

It’s quite clearly very poor manners to berate a stranger in public. Utterly classless behaviour.

And yet you’re unsure enough about yours to ask strangers on the internet to validate you. Another yes-but AIBU.

caringcarer · 30/09/2025 22:00

No it's disgusting and absolutely no excuse for it. Babies need to be changed in toilets when out of their own homes.

DrowningInSyrup · 30/09/2025 22:02

@KittyCoo why bother posting then, if you aren't flexible in your thinking. Why didn't you start your post with I AM BEING REASONABLE THERE IS NO POINT IN DISAGREEING WITH ME.

CoreyTaylorsbiggestfan · 30/09/2025 22:03

I agree with you OP, it’s disgusting and more people should say something. I judge people who do this.

Yes I am a parent and never in a million years would it enter my brain to change a nappy on an airport seat.
Ive encountered my fair share of poo explosions etc with my child and sometimes had to result in changing her in the back seat of the car.

I never understood changing a nappy in the middle of your livingroom either, people said when I’m a parent I would change my mind.Nope, I’ll go upstairs where away from the living area and easy access to the bathroom to wash my hands!
