AIBU to think Taylor Swift is being carefully repositioned and we’re not meant to notice?

I can’t shake the feeling that there’s a very slow, very subtle shift going on with Taylor Swift’s brand.

She built herself up as pro-choice, feminist, outspoken and a liberal figure. But since this whole NFL era, it feels like the edges are being sanded down. It’s not loud, not obvious, just little things like the relentless focus on her cheering in the boxes, the glossy all American girlfriend framing, the way the messaging has become more family-friendly, less political.

It’s clever because it’s incremental. Nobody suddenly says that she’s gone conservative, but drip by drip she’s aligning with NFL values which are patriotism, wholesomeness and big money sponsors who want safe.

I'm not a massive swiftie, but I have enjoyed her music, and maybe I'm a bit of a cynic but isn’t this how brand re-positioning works? Quiet, steady, so by the time you realise it’s happened, it already has.

AIBU to think we’re watching that play out in real time and it could backfire badly? Especially if the upcoming album turns out to be very beige?

Taylor openly supported Kamala for president and has a trans sibling. In today’s America, that makes her Liberal.

I think that Taylor has to evolve if she’s going to continue making music. There’s no sign she might make a switch of career like Rihanna so maybe she’s going to transition to her baby and family era of life?

Spotify for divorcees is accurate imo. TS’s fans are generally under 10 or over 30.

I’m not slating her.

I think that in a world where silence is complicity, her silence on it is sickening.

what a complete overreaction.

Which men are sickening for saying nothing? The King? Prince William? Ed Sheeran? Chris Martin? Robbie Williams?

(I say nothing about Palestine either. I think both sides of that thing are absolute monsters. Both sides are doing absolutely appalling things. I won't speak out because it is freaking complicated, except to say that they should both stop

Am i sickening as a fence sitter?)

It’s quite disappointing honestly when people like Nicola Coughlan are pleading with other artists to lend their voice of support. How can you sit and watch a genocide take place and not even just give some words of support to those campaigning to stop it.

Yes. I find all of those men listed sickening. To be quite honest I find anyone who stays silent on it sickening.

Who has she exploited?

Christ this is depressing. With all the evil in the world Taylor Swift does not even enter the first 1000

People change. She's called out sexual harassment. She writes and sings good songs. She gives to charity.
She's met a man she apparently loves. And now she's being called a 'trad wife'. I mean... What the actual hell?

I mean, I'm not sure how working round the clock and being one of the highest earning women in the world is compatible with being a tradwife...

I believe billionaires have a duty to use their wealth (created by exploiting others), for good.

How are you using your wealth for good? if you live in the UK you're far wealthier than millions of other people in the world and should be using that to do good for others, if those are your beliefs.

Especially when they have as much influence as she does. It’s so, so disappointing. Her position as an artist is secure. You see people risking their careers to speak out, and she can’t do anything to lend support.

I find you sickening because a simple backsearch will show you haven’t even mentioned Darfur. Why not? Don’t you care? Are you a terrible person?

I don't want media stars to be political.

I want to enjoy their music/acting/pictures without knowing their take on x, y or z.

I don't expect politicians to sing for me, so why would I be interested in a singer's politics?

Having heard Andrea Jenkins, wholeheartedly agree 😁

Eyewhisker · 29/09/2025 10:25

This thread reveals so much about stereotypes and prejudice.

Travis Kelce took the knee for the NFL, donates to homeless charities, starred in Bud Light adverts after the controversies and liked a post saying vote for Kamala.

But because he is white and a football player, Mumsnetters assume he is MAGA.

Really? Confused Seriously. It's not for YOU to tell anyone what they should be saying, or talking about. And what if Taylor doesn't side with who you want her to side with? Wink

I suppose at least that makes a change from Nicola Coughlan complaining about women in the UK having sex based rights.

Have you seen the fingers in mouth showgirl photo? I have been a fan of TS for longer than many of her fans have been alive. She has lots and lots of young fans. It was so objectifying and made her seem much smaller and weaker than any of the previous sexy shots. I am reserving judgement but do not recall her ever putting out an image like that and will distance our family fandom from her new album if that is where we are going. There are plenty of other inappropriate female pop stars but was just one clever beautiful and fun Taylor. Hope I am wrong

I thought she looked stunning - certainly not smaller or weaker.

If she’s a Zionist then she should own that. That will then allow people who are opposed to the genocide to stop listening to her music. It’s that simple really isn’t it?

how is she exploiting anyone? have you seen the clip where the interviewer asks her what she thinks about her dancers not having health insurance? and her reply that, actually, yes they do because she pays for it.

That exploitation?

Nobody is holding a gun to the heads of people buying her tickets, music etc etc.

the hyperbole when it is a woman in the public eye is astounding. I absolutely ADORE Roxy Music. Turns out the singer is Tory. Should i hate them now?

Are you unaware of the huge amounts she's donated to food banks at places where she has performed in the last few years? Or is that not the specific, Palestine related type of 'good' you are demanding, so it's worthless?

ShesTheAlbatross · 29/09/2025 10:15

I find Travis Kelce quite annoying, and there is something about him I don’t like (which I know is unreasonable since I have very little idea of him as a person).
But he was at press conference for his job, was asked about Trump attending the superbowl (the first sitting president to do so), and said “it’s a great honour I think, no matter who the president is.” which tbh sounds like something the chief’s media team have said “no matter what your views, whether you love him or hate him, when asked, you will say this sentence which does not mention Trump but talks about the office of President”.

He has taken the knee during the pre-game national anthem while Trump was president and demanding that the NFL cut any players who did so. He did a Covid vaccine advert. I’m sure the vaccine thing paid well, but I don’t think either of things are super MAGA.

Travis is an idiot, just a couple of weeks ago he was wearing a t shirt in support of his team mate who caused a serious car crash pile up because he was speeding, could have killed someone. Also supports is buddy who is a woman beater. Platforms abusers on his podcast.
