Fell on arse walking out of interview

Can anyone cheer me up with their own embarrassing interview moments?
Went for an interview for a job that is right up my street and have some experience of, and the interview itself went well. But as I was being shown out of the building (portacabin classroom) my foot went from under me and I landed on my arse on the steps, dress up over my knees showing that I hadnt shaved from the knees up (midi length dress and wore pop socks so pasty but hairy thighs were on full display - though thankfulky not my knickers), and I hobbled back to the car with a damp right buttock! I keep replaying the squeaky sound I made as I fell and wondering how on earth the chair of the board managed to keep a straight face! Now I'm just waiting for the thanks but no thanks email to come through next week!

You shave from the knees up??!! 😧
I hope you’re not too badly injured and that you get the job if you want it!!

"showing that I hadnt shaved from the knees up"

Shaving from your knees up would be bonkers. Fingers crossed for the job, at least you're memorable. Hopefully it wasn't for an acrobat or tight rope walker....

Abitlosttoday · 27/09/2025 13:17

Oh no! Poor you! It may not work for you, but when I have had one of these excruciating moments, I find the more people I tell and laugh about it with, the better I feel. Also, it IS still possible you got the job. They want a good employee, and a fall won't change that if you're the best candidate.

BashfulClam · 27/09/2025 13:22

You stand out in memory which isn’t bad thing tbh.you also showed that under a hard circumstance you keep a cool head and just get on with it. I’d probably hire you.

Branleuse · 27/09/2025 13:23

What happened? You just got up and went to your car? Didn't people come to help you? Was it not logged as an accident. It sounds like quite a fall if everyone was able to register that you had hair on your thighs.

youalright · 27/09/2025 13:23

Now thats how you make an exit at least they will remember you. Good luck on getting the job

Silverbirchleaf · 27/09/2025 13:25

That made me smile (sorry).

FlyingUnicornWings · 27/09/2025 13:28

I heard a quote recently that said something along the lines of “if all you do is fart, people won’t remember you…but if you shit yourself, they’ll remember you forever”.

I think this is one of those moments. “What did you think of candidate C?” “Oh the one who stacked it down the steps and bared her chewbacca legs? She was great etc etc etc”

Don’t sweat it. If you’re right for the job, you’re right for the job, regardless of the fact you’re vertically challenged.

I hope you get it!

plumpunnet · 27/09/2025 13:28

Sorry OP I read until you made a squeaky sound then couldn’t stop myself from laughing , I think they might be more concerned that you hurt yourself on their property , public liability and all ,
I would say if you were suitable for the job and the best candidate you will still be a contender
fingers crossed

I had excruciating cramp in my thigh just as I got outside the interview room when it had finished. My thigh had gone into spasm & I could hardly walk. They came out of the office to find me in a lot of pain, holding onto the wall rubbing & stretching my leg, whatever it took to get rid of the pain so I could drive home! 🤣
I didn't get the job either just to add insult to injury. I got a better job though

Sunshineandoranges · 27/09/2025 13:31

I had a panel interview for a teaching promotion in my own school for a different role. I was on matrrnity leave so had to go in for the interview. At the end instead of walking back out through the door i walked into the cupboard. It was a big room! I got the job,

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 27/09/2025 13:33

Sometimes this sort of mishap makes interviewers feel warmer towards you. I've heard of people who audibly farted at an interview landing the job, lol. I doubt falling over will make anyone think you aren't suitable for what you're interviewing for. Everyone has tripped over at some point in their adult life, it's just part of being human. You'll think about this for much longer than the interviewers will.

Bloozie · 27/09/2025 13:38

I don't shave from my knees up. That would be madness.

And I once turned up for a job interview 2.5 hours late. I should have been there at 5pm; the M1 was absolutely horrific and I turned up at 7.30pm.

I got the job.

The Pratfall Effect - people find mistakes endearing and humanising - is real.

Gallowayan · 27/09/2025 13:44

People are more forgiving than you think because it they will have done the same at some point. At least they will remember you, so more chance of success.

scaldedballs · 27/09/2025 13:44

NC for this. DH knocked a boiling cup of black coffee onto his own lap in an interview and apparently swore “very loudly”. In his defence he did actually scald his bits! He got through the interview, came home and spent the evening with frozen peas on his crotch. He got the job!

LaurieFairyCake · 27/09/2025 13:49

left an interview room and wrap dress undid and caught on the door handle exposing my red bra, red pants, black tights and black boots.

a chubby, middle aged stripper 😂😂😂

No one will be surprised to know I didn’t get the job

Lurkingandlearning · 27/09/2025 13:51

I agree with @BashfulClam they will remember you. I can’t imagine it being held against you. I hope you aren’t too sore and get the job

autienotnaughty · 27/09/2025 13:51

They should be more worried that you are going to sue them for slippy steps! Surely nobody shaves above the knee.

Same for me

partyintheusaagain · 27/09/2025 13:57

Oh op at least you are memorable 😂

I fell down the stairs after an interview in front of the interviewer while walking me out. I laughed and said “gosh if you didn’t want me working here that’s all you had to say”. He laughed. I got the job

😂

That makes me sitting through an interview with one of my buttons undone and my bra on display pale into insignificance!

I got the job, so it might have gone in my favour. There were a few shocking sexists on the team and I was the first woman to join it.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 27/09/2025 14:03

Look at the plus side, you've made yourself memorable. You've left an indelible mark on their memories, and that'll extend to the whole interview, not just the bit where you fell over.

newyearnoeu · 27/09/2025 14:09

why are people so aghast at the shaving above the knees? Are you all very blonde or something? If you're pale with dark hair it's very obvious if you don't get rid of the hair in some way!

OP I used to go arse over tit so often I could have listed it as a hobby on a CV. Once I was dressed as Geri Halliwell in a union jack dress having borrowed what my friend called her "sex boots" 😁 when the heel of them broke and I went tumbling down the stairs, if that helps. Here's a video of an estate agent doing the same thing (not dressed as a Spice Girl, unfortunately) Estate Agent Trips Down the Stairs Showing a House | Watch - a problem shared etc.

onetrickrockingpony · 27/09/2025 14:16

I don’t think you should be embarrassed at all. It sounds like a really nasty fall and they should have helped you up. If I invited someone to an interview in a temporary building with potentially fiddly steps I would feel awful if they fell over and be very worried that serious harm had been caused.

GingerPaste · 27/09/2025 14:27

You’ll get the job because they’ll want an encore.

Some fab stories here 😂
