Fell on arse walking out of interview

Can anyone cheer me up with their own embarrassing interview moments?
Went for an interview for a job that is right up my street and have some experience of, and the interview itself went well. But as I was being shown out of the building (portacabin classroom) my foot went from under me and I landed on my arse on the steps, dress up over my knees showing that I hadnt shaved from the knees up (midi length dress and wore pop socks so pasty but hairy thighs were on full display - though thankfulky not my knickers), and I hobbled back to the car with a damp right buttock! I keep replaying the squeaky sound I made as I fell and wondering how on earth the chair of the board managed to keep a straight face! Now I'm just waiting for the thanks but no thanks email to come through next week!

@ItstheHRTpat you fell down the steps and nobody bothered to ask if you were ok?

You sure those are the people you want to work with?

bollockyness · 27/09/2025 14:44

NC for this.

Had an interview when I was fresh out of dropping out of uni.

Interviewer: Do you have your own car and license?
Me: Yes
Interviewer: Is it clean?
Me: Yes, I washed it last week!

(clearly he meant was my license clean!)

Needless to say I didn't get the job...

I don't shave from my knees up. That would be madness.

And I once turned up for a job interview 2.5 hours late. I should have been there at 5pm; the M1 was absolutely horrific and I turned up at 7.30pm.

I got the job.

The Pratfall Effect - people find mistakes endearing and humanising - is real.

Why not? Don’t you grow hair there? 😂

I mean, there’s not lots of hair like on the lower leg but I like to be smooth all the way up.

The hair is really really fine. My legs are extremely smooth all the way to the top without shaving them. I double exfoliate every day, shave lower legs and armpits and moisture all over without fail. You don’t need to shave those fine hairs.

This post has brought back a long forgotten memory, about 40 years ago I had an interview for an internal job, nothing high flying but back office based rather than customer facing. As I ascended the stairs to the interview room a guy in front of me tripped up on the stairs, didnt fall but just a bit embarrassed. To my shame I started laughing. Got to the waiting area, 5 minutes later the interviewer opened the door and called my name.
It was the stair tripper
I didnt get the job 🙄🙄

Haveaproperty · 27/09/2025 15:47

I once did an entire interview with my bra and one boob showing. Was wearing a wrap dress and didnt realise it had slid over my bra.
Seedy boss didnt twll me until the end.
I got the job. I hated working for him and left.

I have more hair knees up than below.

Poor you OP!

OSTMusTisNT · 27/09/2025 15:51

Honestly I would be more likely to hire you and reminise about your day 0 grand exit over the next 20 years!

Edited

you do if they are black and your skin is pale white. Being 'fine' doesn't make them invisible.

I once wore a jumper inside out for an interview. There was the interview, then a practical test and I realised when I went to the toilet half way through. I worried that turning it would emphasise the original mistake but decided I ought to. I got the job. Sometimes things feel worse to us than others viewing.

As others have said, I really don't think this will go against you - it was a physical slip, not something that would make you look unprofessional. It may even make you memorable! DH got his first ever teaching job after falling over his laptop cable, which tripped him up but also briefly wrecked his presentation. They said that he dealt with it calmly and carried on was an active point in his favour!

Lifejigsaw · 27/09/2025 17:31

I’m sorry OP but all I can take from this thread is that I’m odd for shaving above the knee?!

elastamum · 27/09/2025 17:36

Many years ago my boss was interviewing graduates in a hotel room and one poor candidate shook his hand and tried to exit through the bathroom. Poor woman was mortified.

ItstheHRTpat · 27/09/2025 18:28

Thank you for making me laugh! Just to say, I never used to need to shave my thighs, but menopause has turned them into dense forests, I just couldnt be arsed because my dress should have kept them covered had I managed to stay on my feet!
My bum is slightly tender, as is my ego, but otherwise I'm fine, and you never know, maybe they will hire me!

Why is it crazy to shave above the knee?

Eyesopenwideawake · 27/09/2025 18:31

I did, back in 1987. Went for a job interview to be a trainee mortgage broker in Knightsbridge (and there's me living in a very rough part of Nottingham!), aced the chat but then fell over my handbag on the way out. They still took the chance on me and I became the most successful broker of that era 😁

Plantlady10 · 27/09/2025 18:37

Another off topic comment but I also shave above the knee, I think people with fine/blonde un-noticable hair are just very lucky! Us dark haired people are not shaving for fun 😆

chilliheeler123 · 27/09/2025 18:43

I interviewed for my current job on Teams when I had full-blown flu. I coughed constantly through the interview, had a squeaky, hoarse voice and had two fans blowing on me at full blast in the middle of winter because I was so feverish.

Didn’t say half the things I wanted to say and was absolutely convinced I wasn’t getting the job. To add insult to injury, my now boss has since admitted that the entire interview panel saw my knickers when I stood up to fetch something as I was only dressed from the waist up because my fever was so high 🤣🤣🤣

OchreReader · 28/09/2025 18:26

Many years ago I was being shown out by the lady who had interviewed me. She waved me off saying they would be in touch just before I turned and skidded right down the wet stone slope leading to the building. Bum on the ground and both feet in the air 🙈 I got up quicker than I went down through sheer embarrassment, and hurried off without looking back. I got the job! You’ll be fine OP 🙂

Blablibladirladada · 28/09/2025 18:30

Oh dear me…
cheer up you might not have to see them again…

cheer up if you start the job, there isn’t anything you can do that will make them change their mind on you.

Mumof2amazingasdkiddos · 28/09/2025 18:34

I don't have a story to share but I wanted to add a few things (in order of importance)

  1. i used to have to shave full leg but thanks to perimenopause I only need to do above knee about 1 in 3 shaves now and I too don't bother if I know my outfit is long enough to cover it
  2. i agree @ItstheHRTpat it's at least made your interview memorable!
  3. will you update when you hear if you get the job please?
  4. did they help you up? What was the reaction?
Farticus101 · 28/09/2025 18:38

Not quite the same, but I accidentally included a very inappropriate word in my application by accident. I found out the moment I was about to go into the interview and was reading over what I had written in case they asked me a question! I sat in front of the panel so embarrassed but no one mentioned it. I'm amazed I got the job.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 28/09/2025 18:39

No one's going to let an accident put them off the right candidate for the job. If you don't get it, it'll be because there was someone who had better skills.

Are your hairs very dark? You can't really see anything on my leg above the knee! Pop socks are slightly more mortifying 😂

Smellitonacotton · 28/09/2025 18:47

Went for a job in a highend hairdressers as a receptionist. They asked me if I'd be happy to have my hair cut there and what would I do if I didn't like the cut? I replied well it soon grows back as I caught the the eye of one of the interviewers who laughed and said well not in my case! I got the job but didn't take it.
