To wonder why we can’t have a points based entry system like Australia?

Backonland · 26/09/2025 20:38

Why can’t we be like Australia and only allow people in who will contribute to society, either by bringing wealth with them or a qualification or skill that we need in the country.

Im not being goady, I genuinely do not understand why we can’t adopt the same approach? Surely that would be the sensible way forward and appease most people?

The thread isn't about single parents needing a regular income. The context is that we have a massive shortage of carers. The women I know doing it chose it for the flexibility. You can do regular shifts, shift patterns, bank work. The mum of 5 is a single mum with no support system, she gets UC top up.

Yes there is a shortage of carers,
but it’s ignorant to say British people won’t do it. It’s not as straightforward and my posts illustrates why!

So you don’t anybody who has come recently. Only decades ago hence you don’t know that we have a points based system.

Only people I know who e come recently are Ukrainians and they are let in without points

Childcare workers on the skills shortage list in Australia.

Probably in places that no one aims to live

Nope. Not on the regional
shortages list. The skilled shortages list full stop.

They are refugees. Refugees are not part of the skilled migration and points programme in Australia either.

Yes. We won't get into those But it's still the only immigrants I've known come in recently which was the question I was asked

I fucking hate what my country is becoming. Fucking racist cunts popping up like jack in the boxes. Fuck off. I love how multicultural my country is. I love that I can walk out my front door and find food from every town on the planet. I love that Britain's culture is shaped by migration. Italian architecture going back 2000+ years. Fucking hell. If these racist cunts had their way, I'd be eating plain potatoes till I die.

Except potatoes came from the Americas. Just turnips for you! (I agree with you btw)

It's not a " skilled" job. So shouldn't be on a skilled workers visa. Tell me if I was a care worker and applied to another country to do that which one would let me in as a " skilled" worker?? Canada Australia New Zealand??? EU? Doubt it

How is a care worker not a skilled job? You’re taking care of some of the most vulnerable people in society. Maybe it’s not glamorous but you have to have all the soft skills to deal with the patients in your care. Maybe if it was treated as a “skill”, it would prevent care homes and care agencies employing just anyone and make caring a respected job, instead of how you see it.

HeyThereDelila · 30/09/2025 05:57

We do. That idiot Boris Johnson brought it in after Brexit - that’s what’s led to the millions legally coming since 2019. If you have enough points you meet the threshold - it’s a disaster.

Although in part mitigation, some idiots advising the Home Office estimated that between 6,000 and 40,000 people per year (including dependants) would apply for the health and social care visa - underestimated by hundreds of thousands.

Probably the same people who estimated that up to 4 million people would be eligible for the EU Settlement Scheme - over 6 million people have applied.

As previously stated I used to fo the bloody job. No qualifications or experience was required to do it. I at least worked in a council care home in the early 90s so training was rather better than the half a day shadowing and a video some places use now

So not highly skilled

Think about it. People pop out kidscand look after them with no training or experience. What's actually different?

Should've restricted to the 4k vistas then

I genuinely didn’t know this and I’m sorry for that. I had no idea we did have a points based system.

Ive clearly offended some of you with my OP so I’ll slope off with my tail between my legs and read what has been linked.

Hope those who have called me pig fucking thick and a racist are pleased with yourselves.

Why would you start a thread without looking up basic facts first?

groovergirl · 07/10/2025 06:58

Back again, folks, and answering some of your questions about Australia.

Care work is not unskilled work. It requires a tertiary qual, the Certificate III in Individual Support, which prepares people to work in nursing homes, assisted living and in-home care. I have this qual myself, as I'm working toward a new career as a nurse, and I have to tell you, it is a shipload of work and very exacting. It also goes out of date quickly, as improvements are moving so fast in the care sector. So we have to keep up. But I do enjoy the work.

The homelessness problem. A PP asked why the Aust govt doesn't restrict AirBnB and foreign ownership of residences. We would LOVE this. I'd add: Why do our govts demolish public housing, refuse to build replacements, and say "the private market will provide" when clearly it doesn't and never has in my lifetime? My answer is: Because our pollies are protecting their own wealth, and because they are in thrall to lobby groups. Most of us normies believe in the Australian tradition of "a fair go" and have a strong sense of fairness. But this is not reflected in the decisions made on our behalf. Nor will our media, on the whole, ask these hard questions of govts.

Boat people. Seriously, we do not want immigrants trying to reach Australia by clapped-out fishing boats from Indonesia. Thousands have drowned trying to do this. That's why the fed govt voted to tow any boats detected by the Coast Guard back to Indonesia. If immigrants want to come here, they can apply via the points system rather than forking out to illegal people smugglers.

Deportees. I have a family member in the Dept of Immigration. They investigate visa violators. They tell me three groups are major offenders:
People who claim refugee status on persecution grounds, then six months later want to high-tail it back to their country of origin for a "family visit". Nah, mate, if you were scared enough to flee, you won't want to rush back. Visa cancelled.
People who come here and join a bikie gang to make easy money from drug dealing. Visa cancelled. Pity about the wives and kids who did nothing wrong, but their visas also get cancelled.
People who come here on occupational points, then assume Australian women of European descent are sluts who will shag anyone, then are shocked when those women report them for harassment and assault. Visa cancelled. Again, shame about the wives and children.

I'm getting tired of people denouncing Australians as racists. Yes, we have a huge debt to our indigenous people, but we now have the political and social will to make it up to them. We get it wrong in a lot of ways, but we are trying. As for foreigners who lob here and trash us for not immediately accepting them, remember that the onus is on the newcomer. We do have a particular culture here, and we appreciate and will help those who try to understand it.

I'm an immigrant from Hong Kong. After all these years I'm still perplexed by some aspects of Australian culture, but I can roll. And I do like it here.

If only our gov could follow sensible rules like yours - unfortunately our courts seem to be a law unto themselves - destroying social cohesion in the process

It really is a disaster. The country is up in arms about it, and something needs to be done.

Is this meant to be ironic? Independence of the judiciary and all that? Or do you think judges should just do what the current PM says? Could be Nigel Farage in 5 years and Tommy Robinson in 10.

They came when we were still in the EU and Brexit forced the government to implement a settlement scheme.

Depends on who you are talking about - Romanian builders/nurses etc yep.

Romanian begging gangs, no they are often trafficked.

DiscoBob · 14/10/2025 11:43

Yeah we do but it doesn't apply to asylum seekers I don't think.
