To wonder why we can’t have a points based entry system like Australia?

Backonland · 26/09/2025 20:38

Why can’t we be like Australia and only allow people in who will contribute to society, either by bringing wealth with them or a qualification or skill that we need in the country.

Im not being goady, I genuinely do not understand why we can’t adopt the same approach? Surely that would be the sensible way forward and appease most people?

OP posts:
savoycabbage · 27/09/2025 07:36

It took me eighteen months to get my high earning, three degree wielding husband of thirteen years at the time.

Father of my two British children. We owned a house in the uk (to Australia….on the points system) then moved out of the uk and I couldn’t get him in again.

Sodukuchess · 27/09/2025 01:37

No need to talk to me like a child.

As you spoke to me. But that’s OK because, well, that was you, right?

Just got my Australian visa ... we are going to be travelling for just over 2 months and will be bobbing in and out. Twenty pages long ... just as a tourist!

Yep their system is tough and they have a policy on asylum that is different again. Despite all the brick bats some are flinging, the op would probably be happier with the same.

Worriedalltheday · 27/09/2025 07:56

A quick google would have given
you the answer immediately. So you had time to write an Entire post but not 7 words into google.
your mindset was clearly racist.

MotherPuppr · 27/09/2025 02:18

Appreciate that question wasn’t directed to me but in Australia, if you lose your job (the job that gave you sufficient points to get the visa) you have 60 days to get a new one or you and your dependants need to leave the country, and yes they enforce it. Yes it’s harsh.

I wanted to resign and take up a new job. It was a job where I’d be earning the equivalent of +150k (gbp) which I mention for context. But both employers and I would have been required to go to their version of the home office and apply for a transfer of my visa, which is a lot of headache and new employer agreed they’d hold the post until I got my equivalent of ILR (and no longer needed the visa).

I think the issue is that the UKs PBS has too low an income requirement, doesn’t require significant enough contributory requirements (towards school fees, a requirement to have private health insurance for each family dependant, etc) and that once you’re in the country, they don’t bother to kick you out if your circumstances change.

Exactly this!

All those sneering and trying to belittle OP for being misinformed, because they share the same name of ‘Points based system’, want to get their facts righy and see the significant differences instead of trying to mock OP.

The poster above has explained why it’s not the same at all. They are much much more strict in Oz and it’s like night and day even under the same name. Lose your job there and you’re out.

Yes exactly. Those berating the op should read @MotherPupprpost

OhDear111 · 27/09/2025 08:14

@Backonland The reason you didn’t know is that the media rhetoric makes you think otherwise. It’s all biased towards untruthful statements that go unchallenged. So we hear all the time that other countries have this system or that system and we welcome anyone and their dependents.

I think people have got upset about immigrants into the uk for decades. Remember Enoch Powell? We are frequently pushed to dislike other people and how “unfair” it is they come here to do the jobs we don’t want! We are poor at acknowledging their contribution. Yes, we do have some people who are here and should not be and we do need better systems to track people who should not be here and deport them. Other countries do this too.

Overall I believe most people are worried about the minority who arrive on inflatable boats. No government is capable of solving this! As a result, the anger of a minority of people hits the media so it fuels Reform and marching in London.

Ultimately plenty of people are racist. Many don’t understand immigration because media outlets don’t present the true picture. To be informed, you have to dig deeper (like Brexit it’s complex) and many people won’t or just aren’t bright enough to understand it. As with Brexit - saying “leave” is so much easier!

So Op please read about the true position vis research from The Migration Observatory run by Madeleine Sumption at Oxford University. Its research led and you can familiarize yourself with accurate info. Hope that helps.

CandleMug · 27/09/2025 08:20

Yes this @NuovaPilbeam

That’s what happened back 2008, mass unskilled immigration from Europe kept the wages low because they would work for lower wages than a Brit. My friends DH is a builder and they had 4 kids. We were discussing who they were voting for and I said you should vote Labour, because it’s because of them you get tax credits for the kids etc… back when I liked Labour!

She said oh yeah but…. We wouldn’t need tax credits ordinarily, it’s because the workers coming over are willing to work for £15 when DH and his team normally get £30. So the open door policy didn’t help everyone at all and kept people relaying on top ups. The public got fed up and voted to leave

If they treated British workers better then people would be more willing to do those jobs. Paying them a pittance where they can barely afford to live is no help

CandleMug · 27/09/2025 08:27

SauronsArsehole · 27/09/2025 07:13

the big difference is between the ones who integrate - like my colleague, been here a long while. Doing everything legally. Renewing visas. Learning our language and adopting our culture whilst sharing their own. Contributing to society (we work with SEND kids) and following the law.

he would be deported and his visa revoked if he committed a crime.

yet a man near where we live without leave to remain (an immigrant claiming persecution) was found in possession of child abuse images wasn’t deported. Wasn’t imprisoned.

can you not see how fucked up and unfair that is?

and to call anyone racist for pointing out that double standard is just stupid on your part.

being critical of immigration policy and how it’s applied doesn’t make you racist, bigot or phobic of any kind.

just like wanting the absolute best for your country and home doesn’t make you right wing or a neo Nazi or facist or whatever the attempted buzzword insult of the month is.

yours, a pissed of traditional liberal fed of idiots throwing around the isms and phobes without having any kind of meaningful discussion of what is an issue that the right, middle and left (though they don’t fucking admit if) are all concerned about.

Spot on!! Those people are part of the problem. No critical thinking skills to be able to understand why people think and feel the way they do, just a mouthful of insults.

ExtraOnions · 27/09/2025 08:29

Higher wages will lead to higher costs .. I have no problem with this myself, I think costs have been artificially low for years, especially food costs.

So we will have higher inflation, which would mean (in real terms) people can’t afford anymore, despite being paid more.

The economy needs this correction, but, short term it’s painful, and leads to terrible Headlines for government, which is why they aren’t keen to do it .. and why we’ve had 14/15 years of steady decline.

On a similar topic I recruit into Technical Digital Roles, just advertising atm.. every applicant is from an Asian background (with ILM). To me, this shows that our education system isn’t producing the kind of skills needed in a modern marketplace. The curriculum around IT/Digital/Tech is woeful, we will continue to need to bring skills in, until that sorts itself out.

Competition lowers prices. It's capitalism. It reduces inflation. It benefits the rich and exploits the workers.

Don't blame the immigrants, who come here to provide services at a reasonable cost to other workers.

Blame the millionaires, like Farage, who want to perpetuate the system because they benefit

To add - it wasn't mostly unskilled. It was skilled workers whose skills weren't valued in our education system, such as building trades, care work etc

I do blame the government’s and that’s why I hate them all now. They’ve ruined this country and with every year passing life becomes more difficult for everyone.

But if we have a points based system, why are so many Romanians here?

They came when we were still in the EU and Brexit forced the government to implement a settlement scheme.

LoftyRobin · 27/09/2025 08:38

Imagine we had a point based system that you took at 25, and it determined whether you could stay in the UK based on your input into society by that point.

RubySquid · 27/09/2025 08:38

verybighouseinthecountry · 27/09/2025 06:27

My point is that they are skilled workers. And they have no recourse to public funds for at least 5 years (this is going to increase to 10), so they are not getting "extra state help". They also have to pay hefty NHS fees as part of their visas. So no, someone coming to work as a carer is not coming with their 4 DC, they can barely afford to live alone.
My DD had a friend in school whose parents both came from the Philippines as care workers. They worked opposite shifts, the mum doing days and the father nights. I have never seen a harder working family. They've been here 10ish years now and I assume they got British nationality, but that hasn't caused them to reduce their hours.

There ARENT skilled workers I used to do the job Got it as a teen with no qualification or experience

You know what I mean. Waitress, cleaners, bar staff aren’t skilled workers. I don’t blame the youngsters for wanting to come here, but it didn’t work for the average working class Brit. It was just more competition for houses etc… also they were entitled for claim benefits in the sane way as a British citizen.

The government’s never kept up with building more housing and look at the state of the housing crisis now. It’s impossible to even rent in some areas.

The poster earlier was talking about internationally registered nurses who take care roles in the UK. One of our phlebotomists was an intensive care consultant in Ecuador but hasn't done the things he needs to do to be a doctor here. His wife has though and works privately and he works 8-4 locally for the kids instead.

The fact that someone has taken a low paid job here doesn't mean they lack the academic and vocational qualifications to do more than they are. The "foreign" person cleaning the hospital is far more likely to actually have a degree than the native domestic worker in the same role.

The problem is people like you and those dimwits who support Farage and Tomeh. It just shows a serious lack of critical thinking skills and an inability to do their own research. If they did they would be able to see through the crap spouted by race-baiters like Reform.

Just keep burying your head in the sand and calling people racist cunts. Great tactic. That level of engagement will get Farage into number 10 as if you’d put the X on the ballot paper yourself. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 🙄

A lot of these racists have crap lives, so they are looking for someone to blame. Same old, same old, blame the foreigner instead of looking at the real reasons that they feel so crap. Immigrants have ALWAYS been the convenient scapegoats.
