I had to go to GP earlier with ongoing bowel issues. She asked me to lay down so she could listen to my abdomen. I laid down, she pressed the stethoscope onto my stomach and I ended up involuntarily farting loudly. She actually jumped back at the sound. Absolutely mortified, I start to apologise and my stomach starts making loud squeaky noises and I end up farting again mid sentence. She remained professional throughout but I’m so embarrassed. I have to go back tomorrow and I’m dreading a) seeing her again and b) it happening again.

DH says will have forgotten all about it. Is he right or just being nice? I feel like cancelling the appointment

lol i used to be in a choir and one of the other singers husbands was my gp. He rocked up to have tea and cake and watch us sing a few times- once the same day as he’d done a female exam on me. I realised he had probably done intimate exams on just about all of us. I bet we were all dying inside….

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 26/09/2025 18:13

Oh dear, OP! Hahaha.

Don't worry about it. She's a doctor, she's seen it all before.

You went to her with a bowel problem, she pressed down on your bowel, I would say you farting was a very predictable consequence.

gamerchick · 25/09/2025 21:04

You've got bowel issues. It's like a full stop isn't it?

She won't be thinking about your farts tonight don't worry.

Sorry but she will! 🤷🏼‍♀️

DrStrawberry · 26/09/2025 18:15

I'm a doctor. She jumped because sounds are greatly amplified via the stethoscope. Honestly, this sort of stuff happens all the time. It's our job. I don't remember any of it or care or jusge. We are all human. We all fart.

Baggyit · 26/09/2025 18:16

You hopefully helped her diagnose you.
All good.

Soberinthecity · 26/09/2025 18:16

I'm sorry you had to experience this. I can imagine it being embarrassing for you - it would for anyone. Drs are trained to deal with this sort of thing.

You won't have been the first and you definitely won't be the last. I hope you get it sorted soon...

BeccaS34 · 26/09/2025 18:17

This is one of the least weird things a doctor will see during their career.

Marieb19 · 26/09/2025 18:18

Doctors fart too.

Steph4ne · 26/09/2025 18:19

It will have been forgotten immediately and not of any note I’m sure. Doctors and nurses see all sorts, flatulence is nothing. Don’t worry about it

watermybegonias · 26/09/2025 18:19

I will make you feel better. I had to go for a cystoscopy. Before he started the doctor asked if I had any worries. I said yes, I as I was so nervous I was worried I would fart in his face. He just laughed and said it wasn't a problem, I wouldn't be the first or the last to do so, and it was just a body working.

Reader, I didn't, but trumped all the way home in relief!

Whenwillicatchabreak · 26/09/2025 18:19

She won’t forget, but she’ll likely use it as an anonymous story to ease the minds of people feeling embarrassed in those situations and to display her professionalism 😂

Peoplepleaserincrisis · 26/09/2025 18:20

You have all my sympathy OP! It's not quite the same but I was in an appointment with our Occupational Therapist the other day with a child I work with and it was very quiet, well the room was, my stomach decided it was time to be very chatty and made the loudest, grumbles I have ever heard, whenever the child was doing a concentration based task it was just audibly gurgling and squeaking to the point of distracting the child - all I could do was awkwardly laugh and apologise! Mortifying! I'm dreading our next session but honestly, bodies are bodies and will do what they want!

For what it is worth, I imagine your GP has heard and seen a lot worse! As much as it's embarrassing, just laugh it off if you can - at least it highlighted any issues you might be having and may help with a diagnosis! Good luck with your appointment tomorrow!

Dearg · 26/09/2025 18:21

My DM had bowel cancer. She was being examined by a consultant - he asked her whether she was able to pass wind.
My elderly DM was horrified at the question - until the charming Dr said, ‘but that’s a good thing; wind is healthy and nirmal’

So Op, just think of that consultant . What you did told your GP something. Possibly what you ate last night. But something.

Onceisenoughta · 26/09/2025 18:21

Even bowels have a mind of their own and act involuntarily, no warnings given - at least you didn't follow through and 💩 yourself - no matter what there's always something worse that could have happened.

After my DD was born the health visitor called to check her over, weigh her etc, I was knelt on the floor & went to lift DD up & one crept out rather loudly - I laughed but she didn't. It happens a lot these days, 20 years on, even in the supermarket of all places - no warning, no force, just involuntary - I just pretend it wasn't me xx

Baggingarea · 26/09/2025 18:22

If it makes you feel better OP, shes probably seen/heard/smelled a lot worse.

Berlinlover · 26/09/2025 18:23

I had a stoma reversal a year ago and never stop farting. I would have just laughed it off if it happened to me.

Calloja23 · 26/09/2025 18:24

Don’t worry. I’m sure she’s seen and heard it all before!!

RandomUserName96 · 26/09/2025 18:26

BrisPerm · 25/09/2025 22:30

Yes they have quoted me from a different thread for some bizarre reason

Probably something to do with less sympathy for the ignorant and for bigots 🤷

lfcarroll · 26/09/2025 18:27

This has reminded me of a time when I was sitting in a cafe with my then DS aged 3. He farted loudly then turned to me and said "Mummy!"

I know that was intended to be comforting but it did make me laugh!

And here was me about to say she probably didn't even notice it!

He sounds like my DH.

BubblyBath178 · 26/09/2025 18:34

She sticks her fingers up foofs and butts, I’m sure she’ll be fine with a couple of trumps.

Oh my goodness i haven't laughed so much in a really long time. I never expected that!!!! I'm sure she's heard alot worse and please don't cancel your appointment.

MyDeftDuck · 26/09/2025 18:38

She’s a doctor……she will have seen and heard it all so do stop worrying! When you see her the next time simply apologise if that’ll make you feel better but the most important thing is to get whatever the problem is sorted out .

Jorge14 · 26/09/2025 18:40

It’s just another day in the office for her. Can you imagine a normal day for a doctor, she’s probably seen it all. Don’t worry about it
