Mortified. Pls tell me dr will forget what I did

I had to go to GP earlier with ongoing bowel issues. She asked me to lay down so she could listen to my abdomen. I laid down, she pressed the stethoscope onto my stomach and I ended up involuntarily farting loudly. She actually jumped back at the sound. Absolutely mortified, I start to apologise and my stomach starts making loud squeaky noises and I end up farting again mid sentence. She remained professional throughout but I’m so embarrassed. I have to go back tomorrow and I’m dreading a) seeing her again and b) it happening again.

DH says will have forgotten all about it. Is he right or just being nice? I feel like cancelling the appointment

In the nicest possible way this is hilarious. I hope you can see the funny side soon. Don’t give it a second thought. I know that’s hard when you live with crippling anxiety. Big love x

Scandalicious · 26/09/2025 00:43

Friends with several doctors..trust me, this is nothing. No thing.
Even as a fairly squeamish lay person I wouldn’t give this a second thought, so trust me a doctor will not even have given it a first one.

Well you went in there with bowel issues so I’m sure she knows that it wasn’t deliberate ……I would be embarrassed aswell but there is no need to be, it would be different if you went in with eye issues and farted the whole way through the appointment

My dentist farted during my appointment, I was already in severe pain and it was just the cherry on top of a horrible appointment 😭 🤣

Me too, while I'm mid procedure in the dentist chair, he let a stinking fart rip, it was rotten and lingered in the air.
His breath stank too.
I see a different dentist now.

Italiangreyhound · 26/09/2025 02:14

Your doctor will be well used to all this and won't think twice about it.

SwedeAtTheFinnishLine · 26/09/2025 08:19

Ahh OP I know it's difficult when you struggle with anxiety, this sort of thing can have you ruminating all night! But hopefully the replies have reassured you that dr won't have been bothered. I'm sure she only jumped because it was a sudden noise.
And even though you'll probably think of it for years to come (I'm sure we all have those memories 😭) she probably won't remember which patients did what.

Hopefully you've been able to ignore the unpleasant people trying to derail your thread and focus on the real responses. It's so rude to bring their grievances from another discussion over here. Some people can't stand the fact that other people might have an opinion that doesn't line up with their personal world view. They seem to become obsessed with proving the "other side" wrong, it's really odd behaviour tbh.

I hope your appointment goes well today!

secureyourbook · 26/09/2025 08:22

She won’t have forgotten about it 😂 but she’s a doctor, she will have seen (heard/smelt) it all before, and worse.

CloudPop · 26/09/2025 08:28

@Youdontseehow hilarious 🤣

Thanks everyone. It was just as her head was so close to me I felt like I’d attacked her! I know it’s ridiculous but I suffer with terrible anxiety and I just can’t stop thinking about it.

This made me giggle...

Calliopespa · 26/09/2025 09:28

Waiting for the update from op that says she arrives to find all the windows wide open!

Not just teasing op, she'll have forgotten by now. Go to the appointment.

I once told the Dr I was worried about my stitches (after childbirth). She thought I meant my arsehole - I let her put a finger in my bum and examine it before she fed back about it being healed and I said..... But I dont mean there I mean my vagina? What was I thinking?! What the fuck did she think of me?!!!!

Edited to add I'm pretty sure I will think about this moment on my deathbed.

Edited

That was her mistake, not yours, and I'm sure she won't be thinking about it.

Exhaustedanxious · 26/09/2025 17:42

Some days are so boring at work I bet you put a smile on her face.

Oldartist · 26/09/2025 17:51

Don’t give it another thought. Your GP certainly won’t, other than she knows your insides are working! They often listen with the stethoscope for ‘bowel sounds’, she just didn’t need to.

Don't cancel it doc used to it I done worse at doctors

StBridget · 26/09/2025 17:57

Don’t worry about it! They hear that all the time. To put you both at ease, you can start with an icebreaker like “Hello again! I’ll try not to fart this time!” 😄

Bikergran · 26/09/2025 17:59

Dear OP, honestly, the doctor has seen/heard/smelt worse. I knew a doctor who went to give a lady a rectal exam, only to be sprayed with explosive diarrhoea. His biggest concern was how upset SHE was at the mishap. Everybody farts.

deadpan · 26/09/2025 18:02

She'll have seen worse, and if she hasn't yet she will soon.

We only remember the “I accidentally sat down on the toilet brush and it got stuck” type incidents…

Chinsupmeloves · 26/09/2025 18:03

I'm sure she's experienced far worse and there have got to be some parts of the job like this to make it bearable lol 😆

NoMoreUsernamesAnymore · 26/09/2025 18:03

Ol, you poor thing. Honestly, she might not forget, but she definitely won't be bothered.

🤣

As usual, first comment nails it

Cyclebabble · 26/09/2025 18:04

Ds is a Doctor. Frequently gets covered in lots of bodily fluids. It comes with the job TBH. I do not think the Doctor will remember you or indeed find you particularly unusual.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 26/09/2025 18:05

I went in to be induced with DS2, the midwife was examining me, I coughed and gushed amniotic fluid all over her head and shoulders. I think that was probably worse.

Biffies · 26/09/2025 18:07

If you'd heard my mother in the line at Tesco's, farting away quite unperturbed, you'd not be worried. My daughter, however, left the line in stitches.

KayMarie121 · 26/09/2025 18:08

Don’t worry! It’s probably a good things as it will tell them a lot about how your bowels are. You probably needed it. I had a colonoscopy and afterwards we were all loudly trumpeting away in the recovery area- icky at first for me but in the medical setting totally normal!!
