ID cards to be introduced. What do you feel. ?

I have worked in serious organised crime for two decades. This is one of the best bits of news I have read in a long while. I have also been involved in ‘small boat’ arrivals. The reason people will by pass several safe EU countries to get to the UK is ‘I can get lost if I don’t get asylum’ ‘UK has no ID cards’ . It’s a no brainer .. why why has it taken so long. ? If you want to have the services your country has to offer - through most of the world - from healthcare to the library- you need to show you are a bona-fida citizen. However , for some unfathomable reason , the flag waving right wingers are always the one to oppose ..is it because they are scared it will work and leave their thinly veiled racism floundering ?

Yes to ID cards = YANBU
No to ID cards = YABU

What’s the point of it?

To track your every move. Totally Orwellian.

Chinsupmeloves · 26/09/2025 18:05

Most other countries I've been to have them and they make life a lot easier and in many ways safer. Great idea and we are behind in this area.

Treeshadebreese · 26/09/2025 18:08

I think it’s about time we had ID. It’s long overdue.

No idea why the government thinks this is enough to restore people’s faith in them though.

MMUmum · 26/09/2025 18:08

As a nursing home manager I once caught out an African female who claimed to be a Registered Nurse, she had been working as a Nurse for the local trust. I spotted her fraudulent NI card, which the Trust obviously hadn't, and I reported her to Borders and Immigration, ID cards would go a long way to stopping this.

Yes and we have the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and the concept of 'spent' convictions which you don't need to disclose when applying for jobs etc.

And how is this register maintained. A list of names and post codes?

Always made me laugh when I lived in the UK that my utility bill was my access to credit and proof of my identity.

Judging by this thread the government has already succeeded. Based on the responses people really believe in its superb capability, efficiency and capacity to run a mass surveillance operation of “tracking everyone’s moves”.

I hope everyone takes time to read the proposals once there are more details and not assume it will be like systems in other countries'.

Just a reminder that 1984 is a work of fiction. A classic yes but still a fiction. It does not predict future. Using this logic we could start using The Hunger Games as a warning.

Actually Hunger Games is a cautionary tale and a reminder about the dangers of authoritarian rule. Like 1984. Both excellent works of fiction that serve as warnings.

You've given much more of this information than you think to corporations like Google, Amazon and Meta, for a start.

Generally I’m not happy about the level of detail these corporations hold about me. In some ways however it’s quite straightforward. They’re trying to sell me things and use my data to manipulate me into buying more. A classic capitalist exchange relationship.

With the state I’m much more cautious. Labour and the Tories are your common or garden political parties. Reform? Well Farage is learning fast from his friend Donald. In the US, Trump is rumoured to be creating a mega data base. Trump is also using the state to silence and oppose/oppress his critics. He’ll use that database to do so. Information is power.

Govts change. Values once taken for granted, like female bodily autonomy, suddenly change when political leadership changes. I appreciate that the Labour govt hope digital ID is a deterrent for illegal asylum seekers. But the devil is very much in the details of this scheme. And ultimately would it stop the boats? No.

I’m fine with Ocado etc knowing what I buy. It’s an optional transaction which leads to targeted advertising. That outcome doesn’t concern me.

As for which gov Labour concern me as much as any, and the others have come out against anyway. The issue is a digital scheme created now and the controls that can be built in.

Pleezgivemestrength · 26/09/2025 18:17

Do you really trust this government........with anything.
They seem intent on doing everything possible to destroy this country. And besides, how is this going to help with immigration. The majority of these 'illegals", and yes that is what they are, have thrown their ID papers away before arriving. So firstly, we have no idea who they are, so giving them ID is pointless. And no.2 the reason a number of them are coming here is not to abide by our laws, so, again, pointless. So I'm afraid this knuckle dragging, flag waving, right wing delinquent will have to say no.

GiveDogBone · 26/09/2025 18:17

They work perfectly in other countries. And given how any times your asked for multiple bank statements, utility bills, council tax bills, etc to identify yourself when doing things, this would make it much simpler and easier.

Abitofalark · 26/09/2025 18:18

jonthebatiste · 25/09/2025 20:45

You don't think you should have to prove your entitled to TAXPAYER funded services?? Really? If I arrived in the UK and had an accident and was seen at A&E, you'd be happy to pay for me even though I stopped paying taxes there 20-odd years ago? Great! Let me know where you send the bill!

What bill? You'd be taken to A&E and treated. Happens all the time. Private hospitals don't deal with emergencies.

Toohot2trot · 26/09/2025 18:19

On the news it says it's working people only that will have to have i.d cards, so basically law abiding, workers will get stung yet again🤦‍♀️

Why do you think I brought the example of Hunger Games ? Because it is comparable in its dystopian bad-government narrative. Both are excellent. Both are pure fiction. So what was your point?

Chattygirl123 · 26/09/2025 18:22

It's a load of rubbish. We have plenty of ID. We have phones which can pretty much track us so I really don't see the need. Plus the Scots and for once all the politicians in NI are against it so I really can't see it happening here (NI)

Whenwillicatchabreak · 26/09/2025 18:22

Diabolical. That’s all. That’s my take.

boardermum · 26/09/2025 18:25

Because it will quickly expand into something different to what they tell you it is at the start. We will need it to access everything and will be forced to be up to date with vaccinations, etc - personal choice will be removed. They will link it to net zero nonsense and curtail our civil liberties.

Onceisenoughta · 26/09/2025 18:27

Isn't it similar to the driving licences we all have?

What is stopping them from asking for proof of vaccinations now?

Dawnb19 · 26/09/2025 18:28

I just don't see why we need it. If someone is here illegally they won't have their national insurance number so are working illegally as anyway. This card won't prevent this. I've got my driving license, passport and birth certificate for id. I can't see them turning people away from hospitals if they don't have one. 🤷

Also how much are they spending on this app? Will it cost the same as the covid app we had? Who is making it?

Also the name doesn't help. Who thought of calling it a Brit card? I live in Northern Ireland and I'm originally from England so don't mind being called British as I am but most people who live close to me would not want to be called British. They like to be known as Irish and to be fair the UK passport says 'United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland'. I think it will cause trouble over here.

scorpiogirly · 26/09/2025 18:29

People need to wake up and really look into them.

I imagine this has been announced to ensure continued cooperation from the French. I previously worked in immigration and every French official from their Ministers downwards told us incessantly that we wouldn’t have an immigration problem if we had ID Cards. It’s one of the reasons the French aren’t that bothered about stopping the boats as they consider solving the issue is within our own gift.

I agree with the French point of view to an extent as it is within our power to stop a lot of illegal working and other activity (which we don't), although not necessarily via identity cards. It's that we don't use the laws and powers we already have. Merely having cards or digital isn't going to help if we don't enforce anything.

Puggymummy19 · 26/09/2025 18:31

This was their plan all along, create a problem I.e the illegals immigrants then come up with the ‘solution’ luckily more people are waking up to it. They want total control over every part of our lives and access to our banks.
