I have worked in serious organised crime for two decades. This is one of the best bits of news I have read in a long while. I have also been involved in ‘small boat’ arrivals. The reason people will by pass several safe EU countries to get to the UK is ‘I can get lost if I don’t get asylum’ ‘UK has no ID cards’ . It’s a no brainer .. why why has it taken so long. ? If you want to have the services your country has to offer - through most of the world - from healthcare to the library- you need to show you are a bona-fida citizen. However , for some unfathomable reason , the flag waving right wingers are always the one to oppose ..is it because they are scared it will work and leave their thinly veiled racism floundering ?

Yes to ID cards = YANBU
No to ID cards = YABU

I don’t get the British. You are the nation who won’t abolish school uniforms (despite the rest of the world successfully educating children without them) because “they enforce discipline, rule following, etc” -as often argued here.
You support school fines and criminal prosecution for parents who choose to take their children on holiday.

Yet you shout civil liberties when the government wants to introduce ID cards.

I think it’s just heavily ingrained in your culture to oppose anything that other countries do (Particularly in Europe) for no practical reason whatsoever.

Why do you think they voted for Brexit and want to free of the ECHR? They believed we were being forced to be European.

Araminta1003 · 25/09/2025 21:15

The Central NHS medical records and apps are good though. Useful and quite efficient, it is why we got our Covid vaccinations done quickly?

And it wasn’t that long ago that most of Europe was either fascist or communist. Might be a message there.

Araminta1003 · 25/09/2025 21:17

I think the idea is that you cannot see a doctor, get a job, rent a flat, drive, get insurance or a mortgage, or even open a bank account without digital ID?

FloorWipes · 25/09/2025 21:18

I won't be complying. This is my chosen hill. Tony Blair, Palantir and this dystopian black mirror stuff can go to hell.

Because our way isn’t the European way. Ours was better. There’s a reason we’re the oldest functioning democracy in the world.

Sorry?

I’d missed that 😂😂

No they aren’t efficient! Most of my medical records aren’t on them, and only some of my hospital appointments; and despite having had two mastectomies for cancer, I still get called up for screening, letters and texts, alongside letters from my GP berating me for not making an appointment - and all this after my making an official complaint and telling them to take me off the list.

It's a side point, but school uniforms are a godsend for many children to remain equal and unjudged by peers due to clothes poverty. They can't afford to keep up with clothes trends and rely on the generic school uniforms to remain peer relevant.. They also get use from clothes banks for school uniforms.

It's not about control, it's consistency and causing great angst to those who have little other clothes than a uniforms, often provided as above by clothes banks or teachers themselves... Seen this first hand repeatedly. Parents sadly at times put more value in spending on themselves than basic clothing for their children...

ISHMAELL · 25/09/2025 21:23

I can't see a problem.

The government are good at big IT projects, they're good at protecting data, and they never have hidden motives. And it'll stop all those baddies dead in their tracks.

TriesNotToBeCynical · 25/09/2025 21:14

The previous proposals were to store absolutely everything the state knows about people on the ID database. That is likely to include religion, place of birth and full medical and employment history at the very least.

There will no single database which will include every single citizen's name, dob, address, religion, place of birth, full medical history and full employment history 😂Do you know how much tech capability and resources would be required for such a thing? The UK can't even keep an accurate list of eligible voters for general elections, you think they'll manage this? If you're going to object, at least have credible grounds!

AngelaRaynersHair · 25/09/2025 21:23

Haven’t RTFT but I wholeheartedly agree with the OP. The promise of work in the black economy is a major lure for illegal migrants. Why anyone would be against it baffles me. We are already on the system from our passports / birth certificate/ NI number/ NHS number / bank accounts / benefits / tax reference number / drivers license and more. Why not roll it all into one!

Another benefit (as seen in Nordic countries) is it can speed up the conveyancing process which is the longest in Europe! Perhaps they will go all switch to e turkey digital conveyencing instead of all those manual checks 😴

The UK is absolutely not the world's oldest functioning democracy 😂Honestly, some of the posters on this thread must be smoking crack!

Mapped: The world’s oldest democracies

With many countries having their own unique claim to democracy - which one was really first?

is the "Citizen Card" still a thing and would that be an alternative for your daughter?

She has one but you need ID to get it! She did have a passport then but it has run out and it's really expensive to get a new one just for ID

Blueblell · 25/09/2025 21:28

I don’t think we can make this happen safely at the moment. Last week people couldn’t check in for their flights….its a no from me.

Also regarding preventing people from being able to work - they will share their phones and quite frankly rely on racist white people not being able to differentiate between the picture of Abdul and Hassan.

Other countries have id cards not digital ids. There is a big difference.

scalt · 25/09/2025 21:28

Will the government outsource this to Horizon, or whoever did the post office software?
will an MP leave the entire database on a train (on a memory stick), as they have done before?
Will this include a vaxpass, as a way of reintroducing them by stealth, as part of the “international pandemic treaty”?

Depends on whether you want to access things like healthcare and education or get paid for your job. I’ve had my card since I was little - has never been a problem. Why the scaremongering?

I want to access them as I do now, without an ID card, especially a centralised digital ID card.

Thissickbeat · 25/09/2025 21:32

My initial thoughts are, what is the point?
The criminals will find a hack for them within days and it won't stop dodgy people working in the underground economy because the companies are also dodgy.
I'd rather the money was put into money laundering investigations on the High Street, that would shake things up a bit.
FWIW I always carry my photo driving licence so I'm not against ID altogether.

by arresting him or stopping any welfare money ? Not that I agree with the above but just answering your question

He still wouldn't comply. Are those in favour suggesting physical restraint, starving people to death to enforce them?

MyPinkTraybake · 25/09/2025 21:33

It feels like a natural step in a riskier world.
