How will this prevent boat crossings?

As some working n serious and organised crime for two decades I can tell you that the lack of ID cards will have a huge impact on illegal migration. Next to knowing someone /family/friend in the UK the second most popular reason to make that horrific crossing is because we do not have ID cards and if you fail asylum applications, they can’t find you and deport you.. and if you disappear to the less savvy areas of the country you can work illegally for decades and then claim the right to family life under the ECHR .. I’m all for genuine asylum seekers by the way .. and am appalled that there is no safe place for asylum seekers from places like Afghanistan to safely claim asylum.. Ie Pakistan ..

an

Hiya NCA friend please could you get your chums in Border Force to get off their arses and start clearing the massive shanty towns before you start asking for information you won't use anyway? Cheers beaucoup.

In London you get your phone robbed (or battery dies), policeman then asks for ID you get fined because you can't produce it and can't access services because of your missing phone.

Phones are stolen in places other than London, batteries also run out in other places. Not sure what "in London" has to do with it

Good luck with mine.

It's about 19yo, perfect battery life - still works, so I can make phonecalls and send texts.

No way am I having a smart phone.

Part of the incentive of coming over via smugglers is the lure of being able to work in the black economy. Indeed, many such smugglers bring migrants over for that very purpose. I'm fully behind Digital ID in principle anyway.

Turkish barbers don't and won't ask for ID.

Plumedenom · 25/09/2025 17:00

Sneaking this through the back door of immigration control. Believe me, I live in Italy where we have digital ID cards and there is a black economy with plenty of illegal immigrants. This will not solve the problem, it's just something they'd like to have to track you. ID cards are awful, it makes you feel like you love in a police state. At least here it means you don't need a passport to travel in Europe. In the UK there is literally no advantage to the citizen.

Fuck it why don’t we barcode everyone at birth?

Can't be long now...
And some people will welcome that too.

London is used as an example because it's particularly bad with phones stolen at a rate of 1 per minute or something.

People will start to have issues when Covid style restrictions come in, and govt can start restricting access to public life

Are these IDs going to be linked to bank accounts does anyone know?

If you think the government is capable of creating an IT system that interfaces with the system of every bank in the country you must be the most optimistic person in the world.

Why stop there. Chip everyone the way we do cats and dogs.

Yep or that. Faster too than a tat.

As an aside, it wasn't the Americans - it was Gerry Adams of the Provisional IRA who coined the term 'Brits'.

I'm old enough to remember this!

Ah I didn’t know that. Sorry! But even more reason not call it that

This too. Can see people being barred if they don’t have all the vaccines including childhood ones.

Pharazon · 25/09/2025 17:06

The fact that the UK is one of very few countries in Europe with no ID card system (either mandatory or optional) is often cited as a major pull factor for economic migrants.

caringcarer · 25/09/2025 17:07

It will stop illegals accessing the NHS and other services. It will be one less pull factors.

Greenwitchart · 25/09/2025 17:08

I already have a British passport which is used to verify my ID so what is the point of having another card? Beyond having to pay more money to the government? Another stupid idea from Starmer.

It would have to include a tracker as well as digital information.

Maybe we could include relationship status to stop all the cheating bastards. I’ll scan you at the start of the date.

No, it won't

You turn up at A&E and they do not check ID (for obvious reasons), they cannot deny treatment.

The lack of ID isn't the pull for migrants, it's all the handouts (that no one wants to limit).

You have to enter the country to claim asylum. Therefore not illegal.

So it will stop all the expats returning to get their health care done on the nhs before returning back to Spain or Australia?

DontCallMeLenYouLittleBollix · 25/09/2025 17:12

Of course it won't stop illegal immigration. Which is why it still exists in countries with mandatory ID systems.

People will work illegally in roles where the employer/person buying the service doesn't give a shit, just as they do now, and they'll get stolen or bought just as passports and driving licences do. It's not going to do the things people hope it will.

youalright · 25/09/2025 17:12

That would be brilliant and check their sexual health history and criminal record

TorturedPoetDepartment · 25/09/2025 17:12

DervlaGlass · 25/09/2025 16:44

Where I live there's a visible problem with illegal deliveroo workers (certainly hundreds, probably thousands of them) and a huge shanty village site in a central location that border force and the police don't want to touch despite fire setting and pollution problems.

There's no question about their status. The IDs would change nothing. It's just going to make life a bit more miserable for everyone. If a Prime Minister really wanted to stop what they describe as the problem they'd legislate (primary legislation so it can't be judicially reviewed away) to require deportation prior to accessing immigration tribunals, remove legal aid and possibly put a legal duty on the police and local authorities to act. But they won't because they don't actually want to do anything that might be effective because they're against doing so but don't have the courage to say so and want to pander to the people for whom it's a priority.

Tldr ofc they won't work.

This is what I was thinking! The amount of times that the person who turns up isn't the driver it is showing on Deliveroo/Uber/Justeat - it's very easy for someone to have 'legal' work status and sign up then sell off their login details so absolutely anyone can use them. Digital I.D. won't solve any of that!
