5 days in the office - rant!!!

DonnyDoris · 25/09/2025 09:22

My company mandated 5 days in the office a couple of months ago, which in principle I have no issues with. However, my commute is just over an hour on motorways that have long term roadworks, so massively tedious and today I have no meetings so absolutely no reason to be here other than presenteeism. Could have got so much more done and also all my housework if I could've worked from home 😖Just needed to get that off my chest!!!!

I know from reading similar threads to these, there seems to be two business models for working.

One is, that you’re given a certain job to do, and you’re paid for doing that job. Eg paint a portrait, so once that task is completed, you’ve fulfilled your obligation.

The other is that you are paid for working so many hours, so if you’ve finished your portrait, you’re then expected to start a new one, if there’s still hours in the day left.

Undoubtedly exists but seems the former seems to be unusually high with MN’ers- I work in a company with 250k employees and we don’t employee anyone on this basis- even IT project managers etc would be expected to raise that they have capacity to support another project or BAU.

Ha bloody haaaa is all I can say. It’s about time everyone went back to the office.

Why? Why does it bother you that people can work remotely?

’Everyone’ isn’t going back into the office I’m afraid. Many of us will continue working from home for the foreseeable.

Maybe

but we don’t all fit in our office, so what would be your solution for that

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 26/09/2025 14:52

My work certainly can’t make everyone go back the office as we don’t fit, they could ask people to go in 2/3 days but those logistics would probably be quite difficult

Spudding · 26/09/2025 14:57

It’s daft OP. It’s even more daft when mandating days means some people are in and on calls with people from other offices all day, whereas others where there’s a need for them to be in, can’t come in because space is taken up by people who don’t need to be in. Of course there’s those who come in sick, just to amp up the presenteeism and reduce productivity even more.

Presumably you don't work in an office job or one where you can WFH as your post exudes bitterness.

Spudding · 26/09/2025 15:09

I swear some people on this thread would rather a builder travelled an extra couple of hours to an identical local store for supplies.

I hate to disappoint you. But many, many people will continue to work remotely, as they have done for years before Covid.

It’s so bizarre! Have these people always been like this about people who wfh?

SwingTheMonkey · 26/09/2025 15:17

Jesus, what is it with some peoples’ opinion that your working life should be as hard, draining and inflexible as humanly possible? So odd.

What’s going on?! I had no idea that working from home is another thing MN gets all worked up about.

If 70% of the office workers say no, then the option for mgt is to close down the business or continue working from home.
I’ve seen it play out.
The power is literally with the people.

It certainly seems to get the saddos frothing at the mouth, doesn’t it!

NatalieW1907 · 26/09/2025 15:40

So what about the people who had no choice but to travel to work or lose their jobs. Think what ever I don't work so good luck. What a country

How exactly? Because I think it’s pathetic to have a problem with people working from home?

It’s a shame for them. But doesn’t mean everyone should have to if their job allows them to work remotely.

Care to clarify whatever point you are trying to make?

I think the point might something along the lines of ‘people should not be allowed to work from home because there are children working in sweatshops’

bit like the earlier comment (paraphrased) ‘some people can’t work from home therefore nobody should be allowed to ‘
