How did everyone sort mortgage/rent and bills while on maternity leave?

Did you continue to share bills as you did before maternity leave so you used your savings but DP didn’t, did your DP pay more than they did before leave and you less, did you both equally use your savings?

UABU- each party continued to pay the same as before maternity leave
UANBU- DP paid more

Thanks all, really helpful. It’s an eye opener to hear how many of you have DP’s who can easily pick up the extra cash needed.

That’s not what most people are saying - they are saying it’s always a joint effort so you both have less and have to balance things.

It almost sounds like you’re saying there isn’t enough money if you’re not working, and if that’s the case, then savings WILL need to cover but that should be joint savings.

Gotcha, understood

It's absolutely bonkers to me how anyone can even consider finances this way. As if he wasn't willingly involved in the conception of the child, as if it's not his child, as if you as a SAHM are not working! I would tell him that you are going back to work early, and he's either going to stay at home or cover half of the nursery fees. I'd also monitor how many hours he works at his job compared to how many you work at yours, and the sacrifices he makes compared to the sacrifices he makes at his. Will he leave work to pick up a sick child from school? Will he decline work travel to be at home? How much is he able to advance his career compared to how much yours is being curtailed.
Also tell him that if you are expected to pick up his slack, then he should be sharing his financial gains with you. If he doesn't think he should, then stop picking up his slack.
