Violet Affleck and mask mandates

AIBU think that this shouldn’t be encouraged? Violet Affleck advocating for mask mandates. Daughter of Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck. Speaking about the importance of masks. Says we should still be wearing them to curb the spread of Covid 19.
Shouldn’t a young privileged woman be enjoying her youth? Is there a reason for fit healthy people like her to still walk around in masks?

She wants hepa air filters in public buildings. Hepa filters filter the air and significantly reduce the amount of bacteria, mould and viral particles that we breath in.

blimey, we are struggling getting single sex toilets across the board, and they only need a stick on sign. Hepa filters are not even on the wish list!

I mean, clearly some people do care. Or we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

And she’s hardly ‘bothering people’. She doesn’t know we exist. We are actively choosing to engage about this. We could just as easily choose not to.

This speaking slot should have been given to someone with something useful to say.

Nobody elected this eccentric hypochondriacal nepo baby, and the sooner she disappears back to her pampered and vacuous existence within her gated community, the better!

Needmorelego · 24/09/2025 13:26

Why on earth would you think that?
(the pronouns)

Because , sadly , it goes with the territory. Cheese and chutney, roast beef and Yorkshire puddings, apple pie and custard, woke nepo kids and pronouns…..

Needmorelego · 24/09/2025 13:29

What a horrible bitchy thread about a young woman that I doubt anyone on here as actually met.

Her sister and (ex) stepsister apparently use they/them but there's never been any reports that Violet does.

That’s your opinion. It’s clearly not shared by the people whose opinions matter in this respect.

The amount of vitriol on this thread is very strange. Absolutely nothing about this young woman indicates she’s vacuous, and ‘eccentric’ is an insult, now? Seriously, you know you can just…disagree. Without unpleasantness. ‘Person X said Y, I don’t think that’s right because of Z.’ It’s really not that hard.

viques · 24/09/2025 13:33

ImATerribleMultitasker · 24/09/2025 13:05

Is this why there are loads of young people going about wearing masks now?

Let them crack on. We have enough issues to deal with without more snowflake angst.

In my area kids wear masks so they aren’t picked up on cctv when they snatch your phone in the street. 🙁 I am not suggesting that Violet is a street robber.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/09/2025 12:32

I agree, @dreamiesformolly - I caught Covid after getting the first dose of the first vaccine, and I ended up in hospital, on oxygen, having dropped my oxygen saturations to under 90%. I was in for several days, luckily not in ICU, but ended up with long covid, which has left me registered disabled, only able to leave the house very rarely, with dh basically having to do almost everything round the house. I can make myself a sandwich, or heat a ping meal, but haven’t cooked a proper meal in years. I used to go to the library, or do the supermarket shop in person, or wander round a shopping centre, art gallery, museum or stately home, but I can’t do that any more.

Gosh, sorry to hear that, sounds horrendous. Long Covid is a b*stard and one of the reasons it winds me up when people downplay Covid. I don't have it myself but know a couple of people who do.

Woompund · 24/09/2025 13:37

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 24/09/2025 09:48

Are you suggesting that a young woman should not be allowed to choose what she wears?

Do you know what mandate means?

Woompund · 24/09/2025 13:38

Overtheatlantic · 24/09/2025 09:50

I guess she’s using her immense privilege for good, although lecturing the UN seems like a right she hasn’t yet earned.

What's good about this?

Turningworld · 24/09/2025 13:38

FuzzyWolf · 24/09/2025 13:23

"As Dr. Akiko Iwasaki says, at this point, the whole population is the control group, and after only five years, long COVID has surpassed asthma as the most common chronic illness in children in five years and under," she explained."

This is the same age group most impacted with speech and language delays as a direct result of people wearing masks.

Masks were worn in 2020-2021, by some adults and pupils in secondary schools. Not at home. And primary schools and nurseries had no mask mandates for adults or children. Can you explain how you think that caused speech and language delays in children under 5? I'm also interested in how the children who were not yet born during the era of covid precautions were affected?

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 24/09/2025 13:38

Absolutely batshit.

BananaPeels · 24/09/2025 13:39

She has no qualifications to be given this platform. That is what annoys me the most. She’s honestly speaking into thin air though so complete waste of her time.

LindorDoubleChoc · 24/09/2025 13:39

I think let people choose. In Japan and no doubt other countries people wear masks just for a common cold, out of consideration for others. I wouldn't mind if we had this sort of use of masks over here, colds can be nasty and result in time off work.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 24/09/2025 13:41

Do any of these idiotic mask advocates ever consider the environmental waste that would be generated if everyone masked up all the time?

Or the impact on babies and children's social development?

Only a complete and utter lunatic would advocate for people to wear them when there is no longer a pandemic.

GPproblems · 24/09/2025 13:42

I think masks etc should be enforced on things like public transport, in hospitals, etc. Especially during cold and flu season.

I used to get really unwell when I got a cold. My dad gets very unwell from bugs, even if the rest of us are fine. A sniffle for me could end up putting him in hospital. I’m fed up of being surrounded by people who are coughing their lungs up on the bus (and don’t say I should just put a mask on - it doesn’t work like that, they’re to keep bugs IN, not out).

It’s a small thing that doesn’t affect the vast majority of the population and it would make us all healthier.

Maybe she realises that it’s not about her, but protecting those who have poor immune systems.
I’m immune compromised due to medication I take, I got Covid more than 2 months ago and the fatigue is still kicking my arse, and my chest feels like someone took sandpaper to the inside of my lungs.

She was advocating for hepa air filters in public buildings and masking in medical facilities not "everyone masked up all the time". No need for such a hysterical reaction.

I'm not convinced it does though. Everyone's immune systems seemed to be weakened after masks and social distancing. We aren't supposed to lead sterile lives.

It’s not a sterile life.

the issue is, after Covid, people resent staying home. So they go out in public when they’re really unwell.

Who do you think should bear the responsibility and costs for enforcing masks on public transport, and what do you think should happen when the public aren't having it?

Because having a mask mandate and having a general public who'll accept it are not the same thing. The first doesn't create the second.

And actually, a good quality well fitted mask does offer a decent degree of protection to the wearer.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 24/09/2025 13:46

My DP is deaf and relies mainly on lipreading. Masks are a nightmare for them as they can't understand anyone. It's not just the lipreading , the mask also muffles the sound. There are clear masks to help lipreading. Is Affleck wearing one? No. She is quite happy to alienate deaf people.

JenniferBooth · 24/09/2025 13:46

I remember seeing clips from an awards ceremony. None of the celebs were wearing masks but the help were The people waiting on them. It was not great optics and gave off a protecting our betters vibe.

It should be a fine, or refusal to board.

I find anti-maskers hilarious at best and downright childish at worst.
