Iamthequeenoftheworld · 23/09/2025 16:59

I get a text message from old friend from work who lives abroad I talk briefly to like once a year or once every 2 years, we were never close at all, more like Facebook friends

“hey, I gave your number to these people from Ukraine. Can you please explain uk pensions to them. What they are and how they work, how they can get them etc. They will call you tomorrow”

i dont helping people, at first thought it was just a question or two and when I heard Ukraine I thought some vulnerable refugees.

I didn’t think and just agreed.

my husband and son and daughter are now telling me off. Going wtf is this entitled

what do you think, is my husband right?

I don’t mind helping, but it’s the way she told me is the problem

Also dd just looked them up on this woman’s friends list and these people are Ukrainian but from Spain, according to Facebook lived 20 years in Spain, so not refugees and look well off! If this is themI don’t understand why they’d need my help

Edited

Why are you even asking us? Why did you expect them to be refugees? Why does that change the fact you offered to help them. Just block them and tell them to ask Chat GPT if you don't want to help? Are you an expert in pensions or something? Strange post.

Dont get involved at all. Most ukranian “refugees” are from Lviv Kiev etc areas not affected by the war,I have EU family members doing business in Ukraine, sometimes 45min drive from the front line, it is not Gaza there. I once couldnt huy Pellegrino water from Tesco, shop assisstant said its due to ukranian war (lack of Italian water??), so asked family member to pop into supermarket near the front line and tell me if they had it- of course and many more, shops are better stocked than shops in the UK, restaurants are open, nightclubs are open, hotels are open, life is usual minus occasional air sirens but russians are targetting military sites only theres very low risk to civilians. The refugees in Europe have had a great chance for something that was impossible for an average ukranian before the military operation, access to EU, UK, Canada etc- their average salary there is 180USD a month, with tight visa requirements before and small incomes like this, its a golden ticket now to move out.

localnotail · 24/09/2025 06:34

I would be very tempted to answer the phone and say "sorry, wrong number"

And tell your "friend" to fuck off

Houndsahollering · 24/09/2025 06:35

Your friend sounds like an absolute dick!
Firstly, you never give out a number that isn’t your own without the explicit permission of the person who owns the number.
Secondly, your mate doesn’t get to tell you what to do! WTAF is she thinking “you will tell them everything they need to know” She needs to fuck right off with that attitude.

I would be giving my “friend” an absolute bollocking for this. And telling her she needs to contact these people and say she made a mistake and you can’t help them. (Even if in reality you could, that’s not her decision to make!) And I certainly wouldn’t be answering my phone to any unknown numbers

Kyiv is not affected by war? Are you for real? They are bombed daily/ nightly. Also, a lot of people in Lviv and Kyiv are already internal refugees from areas that are made unliveable, and some moved on to live abroad. Most refugees I know are from the war torn areas.

There are wealthy Ukrainians living abroad now but would you expect people not to flee the war simply because they have money?

They would not be entitled to any UK pensions, as far as I know, unless they paid into it/ unless its part of the benefits package - which would not apply if they are wealthy/ have Spanish papers.

GAJLY · 24/09/2025 06:57

It's a good job you did this otherwise you would never have known she was scamming people!!! Unbelievable! I hope they get their money back from the scammy friend. I'd block her.

InterestedDad37 · 24/09/2025 07:03

Any advice for me on UK pensions? I've never been to Ukraine, but have been to Spain.

Catwalking · 24/09/2025 07:32

Can you block unknown callers somehow?

Epidote · 24/09/2025 08:26

Tell her you don't know we'll about the system and block.

Okrr · 24/09/2025 08:29

Silverbirchleaf · 23/09/2025 17:17

What a weird request, and why does she think Ukrainians living in Spain are entitled to UK pensions?

Exactly, have they ever lived in the UK would be my first question.

The russians have been bombing / murdering civilians in Ukraine ever since the invasion started.

TheMeasure · 24/09/2025 09:30

Regardless of all the rest of it, why on earth would a Ukrainian living in Spain (or a Spaniard living in Ukraine) qualify for a UK pension anyway?

I am sharing this the same reason anyone on mumsnet shares anything

She said Ukrainian/from Ukraine, didn’t just say people who need pension advice. Why mention their nationality? That’s why I thought refugees.

and because more settled/well off people are less likely to need some random stranger free help and would know how to google

yes it does change things because I thought I was offering free help to vulnerable refugees/people who need it. Yes I am a pension advisor.

And i turned out to be right to think this she later texts me they are poor Ukrainian refugees who don’t speak English working in uk and need help they really need a pension.

sorry but this sounds like a Russian bot posts, calling it millitary operation and not war.

Not affected?? That’s just not true. my husbands friend has a Ukrainian wife and her sisters live in Kiev and it’s horrific what they are going through/the stories we hear

So they’re not the wealthy couple living in Spain you DMd? How did they manage to respond if they don’t understand English?

Not just a CF so, but an actual lying, cheating, scumbag, bitch!! You're better off without her @Iamthequeenoftheworld.

As for the poor people she scammed - I hope they report her and sue her for their money back.

this turned out to be a scam. This friend was scamming them. They thought they were getting professional pension advice.

I’d refer them to the Ukrainian embassy or consulate. No one else will know about pensions for Ukrainian who are now only allowed to stay in UK for a limited period.

I would fear your mobile number being handed on to other Ukrainians by these Ukrainians.

You don’t know who they are and why are they leaving Europe?
