Iamthequeenoftheworld · 23/09/2025 16:59

I get a text message from old friend from work who lives abroad I talk briefly to like once a year or once every 2 years, we were never close at all, more like Facebook friends

“hey, I gave your number to these people from Ukraine. Can you please explain uk pensions to them. What they are and how they work, how they can get them etc. They will call you tomorrow”

i dont helping people, at first thought it was just a question or two and when I heard Ukraine I thought some vulnerable refugees.

I didn’t think and just agreed.

my husband and son and daughter are now telling me off. Going wtf is this entitled

what do you think, is my husband right?

I don’t mind helping, but it’s the way she told me is the problem

What is with your friend? Not much of a friend.

This is very odd and probably fraud.

If you are or have a partner who has the sort of job that people like to tap up for free advice (any kind of dr, accountant, lawyer) its really common to have people try it on. Most people are fine with close friends and deserving causes but when you get into acquaintances and friends of friends that are just looking for a freebie you do need to draw a line.

LongDistanceClara44 · 23/09/2025 19:04

Are you sure she's not messaged you in error and the message wasn't for someone else

DiscoBob · 23/09/2025 19:04

How bizarre. And why do they think you know so much about pensions? Is that your professional career?

Just reply saying you didn't consent to sharing of your number, and if someone wants a pension in the UK then they need to live and work here for many years.

Then block the both of them.

outerspacepotato · 23/09/2025 19:04

Scam.

Block them. Block your "friend's" number.

Yes, this is what I was wondering.

Especially as the OP is a cleaner, not a pension advisor.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 23/09/2025 19:06

Well it sounds like she was more of an acquaintance anyway. I have a policy of not accepting fb friend requests of random acquaintances, I think that going forward this should be your policy too. She's clearly some sort of con woman. I'd be extremely direct and say that unless she returns the money to them then you will report her to the police for fraud. I really would do that.

Definitely block “friend” . They are using you to scam them! Hope they can claim the “fee” back but not your problem.

Iamthequeenoftheworld · 23/09/2025 19:08

EVERYONE REPLYING PLEASE READ MY UPDATE!!!

THIS FRIEND IS SCAMMING PEOPLE???

The friend is abroad isn’t she?

I wouldn’t get involved. Tell the Ukrainian she’s scammed them and block everyone. Not for you to be telling her to refund them, you’d be on a hiding to nothing. Stay out of it

Then I would message your CF of a friend, tell her what they've told you, and tell her to give them their money back! OP, you still haven't answered if pensions is your line of work???

Yes it is

Yes it is

Then if I were you I would report your CF friend to the UK police before she thinks of telling any investigatory authorities that you're in on this scam with her. Do you really want her damaging your professional reputation, at best, or destroying your ability to make a living, at worst?

MissFitss · 23/09/2025 19:14

Are you sure it was your friend? Was her account (whichever it is) hacked? It's not impossible that it's not from her.

Tartantotty · 23/09/2025 19:16

What a cheek!

The best place for advice would be the Citizens Advice Bureau, but I doubt whether the Ukrainians would be eligible for a pension unless they have paid in over the years.

I would be angry with your mate and block the Ukrainians.

Chaosclassic · 23/09/2025 19:18

Wild! What are you going to say to your ‘friend’?

Nifty50something · 23/09/2025 19:18

That's terrible! If it really was your friend who did this I would unfriend her on Facebook and block her.

mummymetalhead · 23/09/2025 19:18

I accidentally knocked ‘you are being unreasonable’ but I meant to press ‘you are not being unreasonable’. Sorry!
She is definitely a CF!

pushthebuttonnn · 23/09/2025 19:21

My usual trick for annoying calls is to let the phone ring out and then block the number 🤣 Just pretend you heard nothing if your friend asks, play dumb.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 23/09/2025 19:23

I would call the old friend and check that it was actually them that sent the message.

GoldenGeishaGirl · 23/09/2025 19:23

It could be your old work colleague scamming them, or they could have hacked her/his social media and this whole story is a scam where they ask you to ‘repay’ them and get the money back from your friend. Either way, stop all communication with both parties.
