Has anyone had any woo experiences, particularly if it's something/someone you've seen? I know that not everyone believes, just I've had some odd experiences myself and it makes me wonder. Especially with Halloween next month and it being a little while since we've had a woo thread. Would love to hear your stories!

I love a woo thread! When DH and I were at university we were staying in our friend's uni house over the summer holidays. There were 3 bedrooms upstairs and we never went in the middle one (whole of the upstairs felt off tbh but it helped we were in the first throes of passion!) Anyway one day, DH had to go in the middle bedroom, can't remember why, I was downstairs but all I heard was this scream and him running down the stairs and out of the house! He had been standing in the room when it suddenly turned extremely cold (it's summer, no windows open) and he said afterwards he felt this really evil presence and had to get out. We moved out after that. We have been married 26 years now and it's the only time ive seen him that frightened.

That is really creepy @Hillsmakeyoustrong Shock some places certainly hold the ability to have such awful atmospheres. My old house was like it.

I would love to hear more stories if anyone has them.

My dh once had a conversation with me as I walked down our long hall, saw me, spoke to me, then realised I was at the back of the house in the kitchen so not me at all. Scared him witless. We own a very old pub, often smell pipe smoke in the cellar and on the first landing. Two relatives who are very un woo, both say they saw a dark shadow on the landing. I’ve never seen a thing in the pub, but have at home.

SorcererGaheris · 23/09/2025 18:35

I'm a pagan and occultist, so I actively seek "woo" experiences out.

I've had what I believe to be communications with certain Gods and Goddesses that I've approached, some of the most recent being Mercury and Venus.

ILoveTrashTV · 23/09/2025 18:38

I was a teenager i was in my room trying to sleep. I always left my door ajar as i liked the light from the other room. A figure opens my door looks at me then walks into my parents room. There door was closed. They walked through it.

The worst thing was i told my parents many years later, they were both very ghosts dont exist type people and they didn't tell me i was dreaming or making it up and to stop being daft they looked like they agreed with me... I never asked them but wish i did. What did they see? Sadly i can't ask them now but that house was always cold.

Thankfully we were there for just a couple of months but moved out a few days after that event. Were you a long time at the house? Did you manage to avoid it for the most part?

Like @Cravey, about 4 years ago, we were in an old cottage up in the lake district. I was getting ready for bed when DH entered the room. I said hello but he just walked past and stood and stared out of the window. I couldn't understand why he wasn't replying to my hello so I started to walk over to him to tap him on the shoulder but he just dissolved. It made me think I might have something wrong with my brain! It hasn't happened since. It wasn't dark and threatening like the first story but it was very disconcerting.

I have one! Yesterday I went to see a spiritualist/medium, even though I don’t really believe in that stuff and am pretty sceptical. A friend had gone recently and found it really positive/uplifting. The lady had my first name and no other information about me (my surname is unusual so I didn’t give her that - she could have googled me!). I was very closed initially as I am aware of the ‘cold reading’ techniques and I was curious to see what would happen.
half way through she suddenly mentioned my father’s name. He died suddenly and tragically when I was a child/young teen. It’s an unusual name (not a John/Dave/Colin/Chris/Paul-type blokes name).

I burst into tears. She said a few things, nothing very specific about him.

I’m still not convinced by it and believe she was mainly cold reading (I am analytical and cynical - a lawyer!) but it was definitely really strange!

Smartieegg · 23/09/2025 19:05

Yes! I moved into a very old house about six months ago. One night last month I was sitting on my bed when I felt something (honestly felt like fingers) part the back of my hair and stroke down to the ends of it (I have very long hair). I leaped up and shrieked expecting to see something huge like a bat or a moth fly out as it needed to be something with strength to move my hair, but there was absolutely nothing. I went from totally dismissing ghosts to just 100% accepting they exist now. Thing is, my house has a really lovely and safe feel to it. My partner works away a lot so I am home alone often and I am SUCH a scaredy cat (literally scared of my own shadow) but I’m not scared of our house ghost. I think she’s very gentle and maternal and looks out for me, my DC and pets! I sometimes think I see her out the corner of my eye and I chat to her when I’m alone or it’s just my partner around!

I promise I am sane!

Bigpinkslippers · 23/09/2025 19:20

I can still clearly remember this, I was aged 4 and used to share a room with my sister.
I woke up in the night as it felt like someone was sat on my bed but also on my legs, I looked across and my sister was in her bed asleep (I could see her as the landing light was always left on and our door ajar) but when I looked down my bed there was no one there but I could still feel their weight on me. I think I must have moved and the weight was gone. Never happened again

Thewitchsong · 23/09/2025 19:37

I've told this before

I used to live in York (born and bred)

Anyway,id arranged to meet my very non woo father in the city centre as soon as id dropped my dc off at school

I'd bought (then toddler) dd a massive dog toy/teddy that shed fallen in love with in the charity shop the day before and she insisted on hugging it in her buggy

We met and he said he needed to go to a shop near the minster for some reason (my father does not do shopping so it must have been important to him)

He goes in while I'm stood with dd in the buggy and she's clutching her dog and I suddenly notice a young girl of about 4/5 in a window and she's looking at me while bawling her eyes out

My father comes out of the shop and I asked him to keep an eye on dd and the dog while I nip over to tell this girls parents that she's upset

He reluctantly takes over the buggy and I run over to knock on the door

A lady answered and the first words where 'oh you've seen her then?'

'Who?'

'The young girl at the window'

During the plague, they locked people in their house if a member of the family had it-for 40 days i think

Shes famous for sitting and sobbing at that window apparently

We all saw her-my father was watching her,dd was waving at her and I know what I saw

arh25 · 24/09/2025 06:20

Oo these are very spooky. Especially the ones where people have spoken to people not realising it wasn't actually them and someone else Shock

There's been some corkers on here in the past like the Essex nightclub one with the angry male ghost and the Savernake forest story.

I've had a few weird experiences but most recently, I had a dream of a young man standing at the end of our bed and dp also had a dream the same time also about the same man. I understand it may well be coincidence, but a very good one!

I friend of mine has a lady called Rose living in their house (they settled on that name after getting a strong smell of roses)

99% of the time, she's fine-the kids have said she tucks them in if they lose their bedcovers in the night or she'll stroke their hair if they are ill

My friend said he was ill one night and felt her take his temperature and his wife often feels someone touching her hair/cheek

If they lose something, they ask her and it appears almost immediately

I've seen her move a crisp packet across the arm of the sofa (the dog reacted by walking over to her and offered his paw, the cat fucked off out!)

I also saw her slide a mug across the table

However,if they do something she doesn't like,God help the family

They once redecorated the kitchen and she threw a box of christmas decorations at my friends head and she took a China figure (that had been sat on a bookcase in the lounge) and put it on the top of the clock (that was in the kitchen) when they bought a new sofa

She was really annoyed when they had to replace the front door and windows so caused endless problems with the fittings (two panes of glass shattered for no reason and the front door refused to lock properly)

They get around it by explaining what they are going to do and if she doesn't like it,they will change it immediately

Seems to work as long as she knows about it first, she's fine with it and accepts that the new 'thing' is ok as its both their homes

I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes

Thewitchsong · 24/09/2025 10:30

Hopefully this uploads
It was taken in October 2013 and my dd took it
She was sat on the sofa, door to her left and window to her right
She was messing about with her little sister and they took about 5/6 photos-this was about photo 3 (they didnt notice it until they went back through what they'd taken)
Freaked them both out!

There was a few things that happened in that house that none of us could explain

We lived in a 3 story, victorian, townhouse in york

The story behind the picture is,i'd nipped out to the shop and older dd was showing her little sister some function on her phone that takes about 5/6 photos one after the other once you'd pressed the button

She pointed the phone, pressed the button and impressed younger dd

That would have been about picture 3

They didnt notice until they went back through them

I came back through the door to one dd having kittens in the kitchen and the other playing with her toys at her feet!

I did put it on Facebook and some people saw one face, others 3 faces, another said they'd seen it before but wasn't sure where and someone said it looked non human

We shall never know

CurlewKate · 24/09/2025 14:34

Is this the sort of thread where I get shouted at/get accused of insensitivity if I suggest rational explanations for things?

arh25 · 24/09/2025 19:20

@Thewitchsong that's really strange. I remember your crying girl story, too. I haven't been to York but know it's steeped in history and wouldn't surprise me if it were full of spooky stories from locals. I remember the famous roman soldiers infront of the handyman story too

I've told this before on here under different usernames.

My family used to go away for the summer when I was a teen and leave me to look after the dogs and cats and the house, and also because I had a job through the holidays.

I used to pick the fruit and make jam etc. One night I couldn't find enough clean lids for the jars, so I put the ones I had got onto their jar and went to bed.

Nobody else came in, there was only me in the country with a key.

When I got up the next day there was a neat little pile of jam jar lids beside the jars- and in every jar I had put a lid on, was a big very dead spider.

I'm terrified of spiders.

Sarah brocklebank?
Shes well known in York apparently (id never heard of her until I heard her story on youtube)

I remember two shops that used to be a Thorntons and a cafe but used to be a police station

The cells where underneath and at some point, they turned the one building into two smaller buildings

They did some digging under the building and found two (i think) skeletons-and if I remember correctly,at least one had been murdered as they'd left the knife in his chest

I happened to know a lady who worked in the cafe and asked (jokingly) if it was true the buildings where haunted

She opened her mouth to answer and a set of keys flew across the counter and hit me in the face

I knew someone who worked in the shoe shop next to the golden fleece (the most haunted pub in york) and she said it was haunted and hated kids

They'd come in first thing to open up and the kids shoes would be slung all over the floor

I was once walking down coney street (the main city centre street) and clearly heard a horse and cart screeching to a halt

Nothing there when I looked round so put it down to having pnd and was unbelievably tired

I found out years later that a paper boy was hit by a horse and cart and later died at the spot i was standing on

Some things cannot be explained I guess

arh25 · 24/09/2025 21:09

@KelsCommemorativeSausage omg that's terrifying, spiders are my worst phobia. I wonder if that house had a weird hostile atmosphere as whatever did that clearly wasn't very pleasant!

@Thewitchsong yes, that's the one, you're tempting me to want to go to York now Grin I love York. I bet that ghost hated haunting a shoe shop. It's a nightmare enough taking kids to get shoes fitted and that poor entity was probably in it's own hell lol

I have something that I forget about and then remember periodically.

I was in hospital having my gallbladder taken out, and had to stay in over night in a private room. Had the surgery mid afternoon and was well afterwards but for various reasons needed a night in before I was then discharged at 8am the next morning. After the operation my family had come to visit and see me and I’d had quite a chilled evening and then sorted myself out for bed and went to sleep.

I woke up in the night and went to the loo and then went back to bed. Not long after this someone sat on the end of my bed. I heard it and I felt it. My legs physically tipped downwards. Obviously, no one there. I thought it was a nurse who’d come in to check on me so looked over, but no one there.

I was very freaked out, but I didn’t feel threatened, so I just closed my eyes and lay there. I don’t know how long it lasted for, but after some minutes I believe I heard and felt them rise and it was gone.

I remember clearly thinking it if I start screaming they’ll think I’ve gone quite mad, and I didn’t feel in danger or threatened. It was like something had just come to sit with me for a while and then went.

My cynic ciaran o’keeffe brain tells me it was just left over anaesthetic causing a weird night terror. But having lived through it I cannot explain it and I know I was very much awake.

MrsFrumble · 24/09/2025 21:21

@CurlewKate I wouldn’t shout as long as you aren’t being rude about it, although they aren’t my stories. I’m usually as interested in the rational explanations as I am the ghost stories; I listen to the Uncanny podcast as much to hear what the sceptics say as the believers.

FurForksSake · 24/09/2025 21:25

And a second one as I thought of it while I was typing out my other one.

in a previous house we lived near ruins of an old church / chapel. We used to walk around the ruins quite often and it always felt a pretty spiritual and odd place. But I love history and it was great to take the kids for a walk and a read of the signs.

One day I went down there and went to take a photo of something that looked a bit strange and my phone died. It didn’t flash up the battery symbol, it just went from being on and having 50% battery to having a black screen and being dead.

I thought not much of it and was just annoyed I couldn’t take any photos. I shoved it in my pocket, had a wander and went back to the house.

When I got back to the house I went to show my husband my phone and plug it in. When I showed him it lit up and was on 50%. I had tried to turn it back on in the field in case it has crashed or something and it was dead as a dodo.

It was probably just a weird glitch but it happened once more when I was walking there. It never happened anywhere else.

This one sounds like sleep paralysis.

You are aware and awake when it happens but you may be seeing, hearing or feeling something that’s not there. Had it happen to me and it was terrifying.
