I’ve had the heating on for the last few days.
house felt cold so on it went.
don’t understand this competition of who can last longest before the heating goes on.

I understand if finances are difficult.
would rather do without other stuff than be cold at home

I'm the same!

padso · 21/09/2025 21:13

🐧 😆

I’d much rather be superior, sadly just raging hot in anything over 15 degrees and have been horrible sleep deprived for the past four months.
But you go ahead and continue to find offense in everything

I think you'd be happier in a cold climate!

If at all?

You go through the whole of the winter without putting your heating on??

What are you, a penguin?! 😂

I don't know about the poster, but I put the heating on more for my kids than for me - it switched off during the day because I honestly don't need it. I don't live in the artic, warm feet and a big jumper, I am just not cold.

I shower under VERY hot water because I love hot water, but with the window opened, even in the winter 😂

@rainbowunicorn I just didn't realise so many people had home thermometers. I am
going to buy one though and check every room 😆

I’m not sure many do. But my heating thermostats is in my living room so I can see the temp.

Tastaturen · 21/09/2025 21:15

The other thing we do more, as the air gets cooler/damper, is regularly run the dehumidifier - it really does help take the cool edge off too.
Edit - obviously not when them the windows are open....

Well, it depends what your threshold is, doesn't it? We're all different. My windows only stay open when it's mild. I don't like getting cold, I feel miserable.

When I've had the heating on i still have my bedroom windows open at night, I can't stand the stuffy feeling without fresh air circulating

Bigoldmoneypit · 21/09/2025 21:17

I have a heated pad that’s probably size of my torso, I sit with it at me desk and lie on it at night. It’s on a timer. My toddler comes and sleeps with me to keep warm. Lots of blankets and I’m cracking out the oodies soon

NoSoupForU · 21/09/2025 21:18

No. I don't partake in competitive coldness or the weird notion of not being able to have the heating on until an arbitrary date.

Our thermostat is set and if the temperature dips below it the heating comes on. I'm not sitting here cold for anyone.

caringcarer · 21/09/2025 21:18

West Midlands and it's about 18 degrees so I have not had heating on yet. It has been a bit chilly in the evening a few times but I have a fleecy blanket on the sofa I put over me and cuddle into in the evenings. I've got a heated throw for when it gets colder too. I'm hoping to hold out until mid October.

DontReinMeIn · 21/09/2025 21:18

I live at home. My dad is vehemently opposed to central heating.

I just cope by wearing as many layers as possible. Before we had the roof re-insulated I’d wake up to thick frost on the inside of my bedroom window.

I'm surprised it hasn't made you ill

grrrlatrix · 21/09/2025 21:19

We don’t have the heating on until October half term.

viques · 21/09/2025 21:20

No heating, and I haven’t even put the duvet back in the duvet cover, though the duvet is all cleaned and ready to go! Bedroom window is open all night all the year round, love a warm bed in a well aired room.

Cuddlesup · 21/09/2025 21:20

IT’s really warm in my house in Suffolk. The house is Tudor and people always expect it to be cold but it actually retains heat really well even in the dead of winter …I can’t explain it, but it’s true!

BadgernTheGarden · 21/09/2025 21:22

I leave the thermostat set all year and if it's cold enough the heating comes on, It did for a couple of hours a few days ago, it's meant to be getting colder this week so I expect it may come on, but we have some windfall wood to burn so that will warm the house.

BoarBrush · 21/09/2025 21:22

Ah bugger that. There's been a few cold days recently and I've most definitely whacked it on.

Was hailstones here today after such a lovely day.

johnd2 · 21/09/2025 21:23

Well I live in the far North and it's 0c in the afternoon indoors and I've been going around in a t-shirt and shorts since the ice melted off the inside of the windows. Only a truly weak person would turn on any kind of heating device before it gets to minus 10.

Muffsies · 21/09/2025 21:23

cardibach · 21/09/2025 21:11

None of those things protect the fabric of the house or a person’s airways. 18 is the absolute minimum for health according to medical opinion.

Sure, I wasn't recommending going without central heating. It was more about delaying when you turn it on, keeping it at a lower setting and using a heatpad instead of turning it up.

I also recommend living in a midterrace or getting your cavity wall insulation done and putting extra insulation in the loft is an absolute must - a foot deep is recommend now, I believe.

Alittlefrustrated · 21/09/2025 21:25

It's been 12 outside, but 22 in the house.

KickHimInTheCrotch · 21/09/2025 21:25

I'm always too hot. Been gardening and clearing out the garage today in a vest top and shorts. We're all sleeping with the windows open at night still.

ItWasTheBabycham · 21/09/2025 21:25

We had it on a couple of weeks ago but it’s off now.

We have loft insulation but our house isn't suitable for cavity insulation. We also live in an very windy and often cold location. For that reason we probably end up spending more on heat than the average house of a similar size, however we've done what we can.

CoastalCalm · 21/09/2025 21:26

Ours has never been off really just have it set to maintain 21 and it did kick in a couple of times over the summer and was on earlier when we got home from lunch which was welcome - difference now is in summer we are lax about leaving back door open so dog can wander in and out but now it’s firmly requests only

NuovaPilbeam · 21/09/2025 21:27

Its 12 deg outside but 20 inside our house. Well insulated 80s build. We would usually expect to get to october half term before we need it on, unless there's a really early frost. We are ok in our house at 19 tho.
