I am really lucky to have a gas fire and use that rather than the heating - I rarely have the heating on unless it's actually freezing. I had the fire on yesterday as it was cold and stormy (NW).

A gas fire is heating.

AlviarinAesSedai · 21/09/2025 23:04

Do people not put the heating on if it’s pouring rain? If I left my door/windows open the house would be cold and damp!
OP are you able to speak to any charities for insulation etc. so your house is warmer and keeping the heat in.
Years ago we got extra loft and wall insulation from energy supplier. Some green deal or something. They need to bring it back. Nobody should be living in a cold house.

Here in Devon it doesn't feel cold yet. It's a steady 15 degrees at day here and 9 degrees at night now. It feels more like put a jumper on, winter duvet on sort of level here at the moment. Not put the heating on for a few months now anyway.

Pretty much similar here in n Wales. Thermostat says 18c in the morning. A couple of times we've lit the log burner. The west coast is warmer I think.

JollyRoseBiscuit · 21/09/2025 23:06

I gave in this morning, then my boiler broke 🙃

NoWordForFluffy · 21/09/2025 23:06

Do people not put the heating on if it’s pouring rain? Depends if it's cold with it. Rain doesn't necessarily = cold.

We only close the windows during warm rain if it's getting into the house.

ChannelingmyinnerMsRachel · 21/09/2025 23:11

We've been putting the heating on especially first thing in the morning as the house gets chilly.

Happilyobtuse · 21/09/2025 23:12

Get a small room heater and use it in your bedroom for a short time, they are surprisingly effective. 15-30 mins max and the whole room is comfortable, we have quite a large master bedroom. If yours is smaller it will do the trick quicker, then get under the winter duvet and off to sleep. Also get yourself fleece pyjamas, those keep you warm and a good quality dressing gown for the evenings. A hot water bottle is also a good addition to keep you cosy.www.google.com/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChsSEwjOm96J8OqPAxVtlFAGHew2F_gYACICCAEQIBoCZGc&co=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwxL7GBhDXARIsAGOcmIN31VZfRxb2VW2wwjoDwflYzA3rQW_95MqYL4H7c76UscuNe79B0_IaArzVEALw_wcB&sph=&cid=CAASJeRoLlF4B8AjNL-KkrqBLRNK8gZlDcCbolWqGxxTI0YJ6feNNPM&cce=1&sig=AOD64_3JANv_tI8bs6KrYwrEUJbc4DzPMg&ctype=70&q=&ved=2ahUKEwiX29mJ8OqPAxXxQUEAHQfLDnAQwg8oAHoECAgQDQ&adurl=

Heating on in the evenings and all night. Dreading the bills.

Why all night? And how can you afford it.
Its chilly up north today but I'd never have it.on all night.

WonderfulSmith · 21/09/2025 23:13

Just gone to bed. It’s 21 in the bedroom and the window has been open for the last few hours.

If you have Alexa some of them have thermometers inside so you can ask them the temperature of the room.

I gave in this morning, then my boiler broke 🙃

Our boiler broke the day after Boxing Day last year and didn’t get fixed until the 4th Jan… and it snowed in that time… I urge anyone who doesn’t have emergency breakdown cover as part of their buildings and contents insurance to take it, it paid for someone to come and look at the boiler, deem it irreparable, us to replace it (they paid 10% of the cost back) paid for hotel stays, heaters… and of course it could have just paid for someone to fix the boiler if it was fixable.

Jolly if none of this is of help to you, Boxt were brilliant in sending someone local to replace the boiler and had a good selection to choose from, interest free payments etc if you needed them.

No33 · 21/09/2025 23:28

I have had it completely off since end of April.

Turned it on today. It's set 3 times a day to come on at or below 18'. We have a nest. It came on around 5pm. It goes off again at temp or timed.

I'm in greater manc

NavyNorris · 21/09/2025 23:30

Our house is quite warm but I always try to keep the heating off for as long as possible. It's like a little game I play with myself every autumn- how long can I go before I cave and put it on!

Yesitismeandiamcomingforyou · 21/09/2025 23:30

I put ours on for a couple of hours morning and evening last week.
This morning was 8 degrees here too, it felt chilly, and the heating was enough to warm the house through. I make sure everyone is wearing long sleeves, a jumper or fleece and warm socks at the first bite of cold, but chilly is just uncomfortable, To ensure it's manageable, I pay the same for electricity and gas year round, so it's usually a bit in credit by the autumn.

warmapplepies · 21/09/2025 23:35

It always amuses me how defensive people get on these threads - bringing out “official guidance” about temperature as though we’re all robots who will all freeze and rust if we don’t follow “the rules”.

InMyHealthyEra · 21/09/2025 23:41

Had ours on several times already this month. We’re on prepayment meters so it’s dead cheap to run

RosesAndHellebores · 21/09/2025 23:45

We never switch ours oft, it's on timed, early am and 6-8ish, thermostat at 16/17. It has c9me on occasionally in the morning over the last 4/5 weeks. I can't stand getting up in the cold. It might go up to 18/19 if it gets v cold but we are inclined to light a fire if it's cold and we are in.

oneoneone · 22/09/2025 00:11

padso · 21/09/2025 21:04

@rainbowunicorn I just didn't realise so many people had home thermometers. I am
going to buy one though and check every room 😆

Our house is zoned so you can set the temperature individually in each room (so it only goes on in guest rooms if someone's visiting, so there's a wall thermostat in each room that tells shows the temperature.

OP, we haven't had it on yet, in London, Our current temps are showing as 22 and I run hot, so tend to keep it off until the rest of the family rebels. I'm sorry you're cold, though, it's miserable to feel that way.

oh bad luck! Apparently we're getting an Indian summer next week so I hope it won't be too chilly before you get it sorted. So expensive though.

sunshine47 · 22/09/2025 01:13

I wore shorts to work today. I put a jumper on after sunset and the evenings are definitely chillier but I don't want to start wrapping up or putting the heating on yet

Momtotwokids · 22/09/2025 03:55

I live in the US and it was 85 f / 29.4 c today. We have had a very hot summer and the air conditioner is running a lot. Almost 2 months without rain also.

I only mentioned 'official guidance' when someone suggested 13 was the recommendation, and that we all currently heat our houses to 35. I felt the need to clarify the actual guidance, which exists for a reason.

ApolloandDaphne · 22/09/2025 06:43

It's 5 degrees here this morning (Scotland) and my house is cold at around 17 degrees so I've popped the heating on for a little while. It won't need to be on all day. I refuse to be cold so heat my home as required.

Tastaturen · 22/09/2025 06:53

Well, I'm glad I stuck my hall storage heater on last night - the small blast of warm air has been welcome to take the chill off this cold and damp morning in the cold north of Scotland. 😁

BountifulPantry · 22/09/2025 06:57

Ive not been cold so far this year. TBH sept- October I’m more likely to do an hours blast in the morning if I’m wfh. It’s more Nov-feb I have a set timer.

Hate the bill in Jan…

Newbie8918 · 22/09/2025 07:05

I have a very old house and aim to keep it at 18 or above, all year round to avoid cold spots which can cause condensation, damp and mould. We also air it a lot by opening windows in every room which drops the temp. It’s on a thermostat so the heating is never really ‘off’. This week it’s kicked in for 15-20 mins a couple of times. The rest of the time, it’s been at 19-20 without intervention. We’re up north and it’s noticeably dropped this last week.
