To say love of dogs has GONE TOO FAR !!

DP’s grandparent’s 60th wedding anniversary, and we are all in the Lake District to celebrate. Every pub and cafe is crawling with wet dogs. We went out for dinner this evening and the pub was full of incessantly yapping dogs. A woman let her dogs piss all over the floor of the bar - disgusting. When confronted, she just turned on her heel and left. It is almost as bad in London - going to the loo in a pub is fraught with danger as you may run trip over the leash of a sausage dog with complex emotional needs and break your neck 😡😡😡 AIBU to say all dog owners should have to have a license and go on a civic sense training course at a minimum / be made to live in one big kennel with their mutts away from us at a maximum?

I like dogs and own one but don’t understand why they need to go everywhere. Garden centres, cafes, beaches, restaurants, pubs. Just leave them at home, or have some consideration of others.

I was on a beach in the summer with my
young children, dogs running along the beach off lead. One did a massive poo next to where why kids were playing. Granted woman cleared it up but my youngest was so close to stepping in it. Absolutely gross and I was annoyed they didn’t have better control over them!

Completely agree. We were in a lovely pub a couple of months ago (gourmet type pub) & thankfully had just finished our meals when a couple came in with their dog. It absolutely stank of wet dog - smelled disgusting & we had to move seats the smell was so bad. No regard for others anymore at all. LEAVE THE DOGS AT HOME PLEASE!!!

Can we get people to do a course to control their obnoxiously behaved sprogs , or drunk morons to stop being dickheads etc… you don’t like dogs, and met one shitty dog owner, so what. If you don’t like dogs the lake district isnt the place to go.

ThisOldThang · 20/09/2025 21:36

I think a lot of people that bought dogs during lockdown are now trapped holidaying in the UK.

The seaside is now overrun with dogs barking and straining at their leashes as they try to maul each other. It's a complete shit show.

I saw a woman sat on the beach desperately trying to control a Staffordshire Bull Terrier as it barked and snarled at every passing dog.

'I don't know what's got into him, Dave. Why's he doing this?'

You bought a fighting dog, love. 🙄

SeaAndStars · 20/09/2025 21:38

Wetherspoons don't let dogs in so there's an alternative in pretty much every town for people who don't like dogs.

TheChosenTwo · 20/09/2025 21:41

Not a dog owner, don’t mind seeing one on a walk but I don’t want to sit and eat my dinner near one and I hate that they are everywhere.
They bloody stink!

Onetimeusername1 · 20/09/2025 21:43

Dog owner here and completely agree. Unless your pooch is impeccably behaved (mine is not) leave them at home when you go to the pub. At the very least base yourself in a beer garden as far out the way as possible. Also your dog doesn't enjoy shopping even if you think she looks adorable trotting around with you or carried around.

wrongthinker · 20/09/2025 21:44

I love dogs and am always happy to see a dog in a pub, especially if it's a friendly one.

I did see a man walking his dog around the local ASDA the other day, though, and thought that was a bit much.

Vallmo47 · 20/09/2025 21:01

It’s possible to love dogs and still think they don’t belong everywhere and that too few owners have them under control.
No one minds well behaved, trained dogs on leads with owners who pick up after them and who keep a look out for other people (ie don’t walk 2 adults and big dog abreast on a small pavement or letting dogs run loose on cycle paths because there’s a tiny bit more grass that side). It’s just so few people seem to care about others anymore - what about allergies and fears of dogs? Should my dad not be allowed to go into pubs because he’s allergic and now there’s a high possibility of dogs there? The dogs trump his human needs and wishes? Really?

I walk to work.
Unfortunately it's also dog-walk o'clock.

It's an inattentive human issue, but it is the dog's presence that enables a human to take up the whole bloody path with their sodding extension lead.

No, I'm not spending my next 8.5 hours with soggy feet and trousers from going off-path into the long, wet grass because an owner can't pay attention while their dog isn't walking to heel with a trip wire straddling the whole path.

Yes, I will stand my ground on the path and politely say "excuse me" and wait for the path to be passable.

But in good news, I haven't yet had to spend a day failing to look professional, slathered in stripes of mud while an owner gushes "it's ok, he's friendly"... yet...
(based on umpteen previous experiences and changes of clothes after less than an hour of use)

BornInBradford · 20/09/2025 21:46

I take my dog to the pub and to dog friendly places, and leave him if going to places that aren’t dog friendly. It’s up to a business to decide whether it welcomes dogs, and I imagine those that do do it because it’s good for business. I’ve never seen an adult dog wee in a cafe or pub. But I was once out with my dog when a dad with two kids shouted at me because my ‘filthy dog’ had gone near the children’s play area - he said it’s people like me who put kids at risk of getting sick from dog poo. My dog hadn’t done any toileting in the park, so I was a bit speechless. Children are many times more likely to spread bugs than dogs. Flu, colds, noroviruses - I have caught far more bugs from other people’s kids than anyone ever has from a dog. I don’t complain though, I was a ‘filthy kid’ once myself. But some people definitely need to calm down and not get too worked up about dogs.

spoonbillstretford · 20/09/2025 21:46

Mumsnetters always seem to be troubled by naughty dogs and children when out and about. I never have any problem with either.

autienotnaughty · 20/09/2025 21:54

I have a dog he’s fab and I love him to bits but no I don’t want to see them in pubs cafes or shops . I don’t mind in a beer garden but not indoors

LaurieFairyCake · 20/09/2025 20:32

Obviously the woman should have cleaned up the piss

but love of dogs doesn’t go far enough, thousands of cunts abandon dogs every year

showing there are far too many and it’s too easy to buy a dog!

SeaAndStars · 20/09/2025 22:03

For pretty much the whole history of pubs people have taken their dogs in with them.

Acatinthehat · 20/09/2025 22:10

I agree, OP. I don’t mind dogs (most of them, anyway), but I’m really tired of seeing them absolutely everywhere - it’s just too much. I actually think more bars and restaurants should consider not allowing dogs at all. Allow them in a beer garden, not inside. Like PP said, though, it’s rarely the dog that’s the issue, it’s almost always the owner. I honestly don’t understand why people can’t leave their dogs at home for a couple of hours these days, heaven forbid!

Exactly. I am glad to see on this thread so many dog owners and dog lovers are against the whole dogs being everywhere thing.

It’s not about dog lovers vs. Dog haters, it’s about consideration for others.

Personally I’m indifferent towards dogs and of course hate cruelty towards them (which btw is normally committed by dog owners not those of us who choose not to own them) but I’ve been annoyed the past few years they are everywhere.

My local cafe Nero and other cafes is full of them barking at each other and often wet and smelling or shaking themselves everywhere. Now Costa allows them There is not one cafe in my local area I’m aware of that doesn’t have dogs so no I can’t just choose another cafe. I’ve had to opt out.

I was on holiday recently in a European country and found a cool lunch place, some huge unleashed dog ran up to “welcome” me as soon as I came in and its owner was nowhere to be seen, so I was on edge as I had no idea of its intentions and why it was fixated on me.

The staff member did grab it and shoo it away after I asked, but then she moved behind the counter and was rolling up her sleeves ready to serve me after touching this dog. I know she did it on my behalf but I did hope she would wash her hands after handling the dog! I ended up just leaving without being ordered because of the hygiene thing plus I knew the dog would likely come back.

In my apartment building there are way too many dogs! I live in between two dog owners and the whole hall stinks of dog sometimes. There’s been occasions where pee has been left in the lift and others have complained about it and they’ve had to check cctv to figure out who it was and send them warnings etc. Also had one dog jump all over and scratch me in the communal area and then the shitty owner refused to leash her dog when I asked her to. She didn’t even have a collar on it!

I did complain and then dog owners were all advised in writing to keep dogs on a leash and it’s been fine since tbf. But I’m annoyed it’s taken me and other various people having to speak up in the first place for some rules to be placed on dog owners .

Honestly I don’t feel a 5th floor apartment is that suitable or nice for the dogs either. We really need to start thinking about where dogs do and don’t belong. Both for the sake of humans and dogs.

I would never do such a thing!

hadjustaboutenough · 20/09/2025 22:50

It's not about love of dogs going too far. It's irresponsible people never being held to account. Irresponsible, impolite people ruin nice things in all areas of life.

Livelovebehappy · 20/09/2025 20:47

Absolutely happy for pubs and cafes to allow dogs in. The fact that you mention there were lots of dogs in the places you visited suggests that the business needed this, or they would have been nearly empty. When it’s raining, like today, families tend to stay home. But people with dogs have to go out to exercise them, so then they utilise cafes and pubs, helping to keep them open.

Agree with this 100%

CookingFatCat · 21/09/2025 00:59

Many, many people are more cunty to be frank and they’re still being bred.

Some mumsnetters do seem to have an awful lot of trouble with dogs, stealing their picnics, weeing on their bags etc. Very odd that they seem to have issues every time they leave the house.

I genuinely have had a dog wee on my book & towel at the beach, my kids sandcastle at the beach and my picnic at the park.. that is three seperate occasions (albeit over about 7 years) so hardly a rare occasion. My friend sea swims and said she has had dogs wee on her towel and clothes multiple times.
