Hair help!

Posting here instead of style and beauty as need a quick answer to try and get this fixed tonight or tomorrow.
Had highlights done, which I liked, it is light but my hair lifted really well apparently. I met with a friend today who took one look and said you need to cover that with a darker colour asap it looks ridiculous ( thanks for that) so question is can I just chuck a box colour over it? She reckons a mid to dark brown. I can’t afford to go back to hairdressers as highlights cost quite a bit so box colour it is.
Any advice from hairdressers or someone who has done this themselves successfully would be greatly appreciated!

The hair looks lovely. Don't put a box dye on it, and maybe do some work exploring why your first reaction when a supposed "friend" was nasty to you was to immediately do what they said even if it meant packing in something you liked.

That’s very helpful, I never thought of make up clothes etc it was a light brown, maybe dark blonde before- quite a warm golden tone now a lot lighter and a more cool neutral tone which Hairdresser said would suit me better being cool toned complexion with pink undertones.

Yep I know, a few have asked same question and as I’ve said, when someone comments negatively, it makes you look again and be more critical, maybe it’s not as nice as I thought, maybe it is too light etc I know it’s just one person’s opinion but it was just so brutal and honest that I nearly went to boots on the way home to get a dye. I know it’s silly and maybe I do need to work on my confidence a bit as it did knock it completely.

Well you can cheerfully inform your friend that about 50 other people think your hair is funky and fantastic.

OP your hair looks amazing. I wish I had as much hair as you and the colour looks lovely. Your 'friend' is definitely jealous/envious. If there are other things in the friendship that don't sit right with you, I would have a good think about what she is bringing to your life. We've just got this snapshot but it sounds like she is making you doubt yourself and damaging your self esteem. Friends are supposed to make us feel better about ourselves and bring light to our lives. They are the family we choose. You could choose to let her go.......

I know, I really wasn’t expecting it and I will tell her, because she will be checking in to see if I’ve rectified the “ mistake “ ( she will still think she’s right and you are all wrong) 😅

It’s been a rocky road really and to be honest a whole other thread is needed to go into everything but I’ve known her a long time and when she’s lovely she really lifts me up and I forget everything she’s done/ said until she does it again. She is a tricky character for sure but I do love her ( but don’t always like her)

Sounds like either change makes your friend uncomfortable or shes a nasty piece of work is jealous of you.

I cannot understand your friend's comment at all.
What on earth would motivate her to not only criticise the result, but to recommend you sabotage such a professional job with a bloody box dye???? I can't get my head around it.

Wow that person is NOT your friend. I'd say she's trying to sabotage you because putting a mid to dark brown colour on hair as light as yours would probably make it black.

Your hair is beautiful! Do not put a brown box dye on and ruin those gorgeous highlights! It would either go greenish or wash up all kinds of ginger - I've learned from experience.

Your friend is weird, she sounds like the type who would only want to hear your bad news and never the good. There's no way she looked at your hair and genuinely thought a brown box dye would look better

Thank you. As I’ve said in pp I nearly went to boots and grabbed a colour but had no idea what to cover it with so came here to ask advice on what to use. Someone asked me to upload a photo and everyone I think has said not to! I think if it was 50/50 with comments I might have gone ahead and coloured it but I think I’ve read all the comments and not one person has said to dye it- apart from one or two who said if you think it’s too light, tone it a bit darker.

Thank you to everyone who has replied, I really appreciate all your comments and taking the time to help me and reassure me. Weird thing is it looked awful before, I didn’t realise how orange and straggly my hair looked and she never said anything when my hair WAS awful. My hairdresser takes before and after photos so will upload-
