Should I tell Tesco I basically stole £300 from them?

Just checked my banking app and had around £300 more than I was expecting. Turns out that one of our shops was cancelled by dh but it still showed up for delivery. Husband wasn’t in so son accepted the order AND we got the refund. So it’s actually funny because our texts shows us getting our wires crossed. Husband thought I had unilaterally decided to reorder. He asked “so you did decide to do the shop in the end” and I answered in the affirmative as I very coincidentally happened to go into M and S for some bits my daughter wanted to try. And it was that I thought he was referring to. I thought her was being sexy cause dd went a bit overboard with the cookies, dips etc

Anyway, it’s been about three weeks. I guess this has slipped through.

Wouls you tell Tesco? I’m surprised that the idea of being sneaky flashed in my mind.

It was a pricier shop as DH ordered a few nicer bottles of wine to enjoy for a family event.

Absolutely not. If there’s a chain, there’s no blame! An independent shop would be different

MyDeftHedgehog · 19/09/2025 21:43

I wouldn't. Tesco make enough profit.
Enjoy your windfall!!

janehopper · 19/09/2025 21:44

I suspect they would prefer you not to say anything rather than take up time for someone to reconcile it. They will build this sort of thing into their model.

Legally they have 6 years to chase you for the amount.

I'm a moral person so I would drop them an email and let them know the error.

If the mistake was made by a human then someone could lose their job over this. If you're ok with that then fair enough...

I once got a very expensive bottle of gin with my Ocado delivery. I notified them as I felt bad someone might have paid and didn't get it. They just told me to keep it.

grrrlatrix · 19/09/2025 21:45

I’m in the “tell them” camp. It’s not even that I object to them being stolen from - it’s that the anxiety would haunt me.

SquareElephant · 19/09/2025 21:45

Theft is theft. This is how society falls apart in increments.

grumpygrape · 19/09/2025 21:45

Yes, you should contact them. It's the honest and decent thing to do. They won't do anything but you will know you have done the right thing.
Trust me the view from the moral high ground is better than that from skulking down below.
You don't need to crow about it, just know you have done the right thing.
I dislike comparisons between large and small organisations, they all base their prices to the public on profit and loss amongst other things.

SweetPeasandGerberas · 19/09/2025 21:46

I would tell them

Redpeach · 19/09/2025 21:51

£300 is alot on one delivery

Melodramatic

Honestly this thread is bonkers. She isn't taking from john the corner shop the small business that is struggling - they are not the Multi millions that are actually ripping us off each day. Have you seen the ridiculous price rises and dont tell me its just because of NI brexix etc. Some of it is pure greed end of.

I have heard absolutely no one being chased for money 6 years later from a supermarket or shop.

Cadenza12 · 19/09/2025 21:52

I had a £180 delivery sent twice. I phoned and was told it's my lucky day! So I kept it with a clear conscience.

Walklightly · 19/09/2025 21:52

Of course you should tell them. You have willingly accepted/retained a valuable shop and chosen not to pay. Whether it is a sole trader or a multinational is irrelevant. The question is whether you are honest or dishonest. It is astonishing and depressing that so many people on here seem to think stealing is acceptable.

Olifleck · 19/09/2025 21:54

I would definitely tell them. I'd know in my heart I'd done something that felt like stealing so I wouldn't want it to mark my own perception of my character, even if nobody else would know about it. Also, what if somebody gets in trouble for the administrative error. I think they will probably say keep the money anyway.

Orangepate · 19/09/2025 20:27

Honestly, I wouldn’t, not for Tesco and I am generally extremely honest.

I think i doubt your statement of honesty.

Kinda sounds like I'm honest until I get a chance to not be or I'm honest with people I care about but I'll rip off strangers.

I don't like this "they're a big corporation" thought process. We all pay in the end whether you diddle Tesco or a little family business.

Ah, another one presumably in favour of a wealth tax, on people who have saved more than them.

DontReinMeIn · 19/09/2025 21:58

Absolutely leave it.

Tesco have profiteered off the cost of living crisis and make a record profit year on year. Last year they made an operating profit of £3,128 MILLION, a 10.9% increase on 2023. They’ll be fine.

CanSeeClearlyNowTheRainHasGone · 19/09/2025 21:59

jollygoose · 19/09/2025 20:30

I wouldn't I'm sure Tesco can take the loss

Remind me to burgle your house some day,

I'm gonna use that defence in court.

🙄

flobalobble · 19/09/2025 22:01

Enjoy your free shop ,give half to your favourite charity and treat yourself to something lovely with the other half 😉

OhMyGiddyAnt · 19/09/2025 22:02

I’d definitely let them know. It wouldn't cross my mind not too. If you think of yourself as a moral decent person then you would know that. It’s not ‘sneaky’ to keep the money it’s dishonest.

Have you seen the thread about the women whose son was caught shoplifting. Look at what posters say about the lad.

TunipTheVegimal24 · 19/09/2025 22:02

If you tell them now, it'll cause more problems for their staff. I think they'd be more likely to get in trouble if it came up now, as someone has obviously had an admin error.

In terms of your moral obligation to Tesco the company, they rob all of us, every week. You're just getting a tiny portion of that back.

Moveoverdarlin · 19/09/2025 22:03

I would keep schtum.

RawBloomers · 19/09/2025 22:03

I normally would call them and say. But I’m not so sure in this instance.

If you’d realised the error at the time you’d have had the choice to keep the shop or ask them to take it back. That opportunity has passed. You cancelled the shop for a reason - if those reasons became void and you would have bought pretty much exactly what they delivered anyway, I would probably tell them. But if you would have left off the pricey wine, or if it doubled up on some of the stuff you ended up getting from M&S because you thought you weren’t getting the Tesco shop - then you’re out of pocket because they screwed up. Personally, I’m not sure I could be bothered trying to sort that out with them. The value of your time would probably be more than the value of the shop.

TheSilentSister · 19/09/2025 22:03

Keep the money OP.
I'm not lucky that way. One year I ordered a Buzz Lightyear toy off the internet. It didn't turn up. I complained and they gave me a refund. I went out and bought Buzz elsewhere. A few days later, I put some cardboard in the blue bin and thought it looked a bit full - low and behold - it was Buzz! I took the other Buzz back to the shop and got a refund.
Xmas day, DC opens Buzz and one of his wings doesn't work!
That'll teach me.

PixellatedPixie · 19/09/2025 22:04

I and things I hadn’t ordered arrive in a furniture order and called and reported it but they told me to just keep them!

NamelessNancy · 19/09/2025 22:04

How could they possibly demand money for an order which had been cancelled? OP hasn't stolen anything, they have given it to her. If I go into a shop, pick something up and then change my mind, can the retailer follow me out of the store, shove the item in my bag and then demand payment? Ridiculous! Don't think any more of it OP.
