Should I tell Tesco I basically stole £300 from them?

Just checked my banking app and had around £300 more than I was expecting. Turns out that one of our shops was cancelled by dh but it still showed up for delivery. Husband wasn’t in so son accepted the order AND we got the refund. So it’s actually funny because our texts shows us getting our wires crossed. Husband thought I had unilaterally decided to reorder. He asked “so you did decide to do the shop in the end” and I answered in the affirmative as I very coincidentally happened to go into M and S for some bits my daughter wanted to try. And it was that I thought he was referring to. I thought her was being sexy cause dd went a bit overboard with the cookies, dips etc

Anyway, it’s been about three weeks. I guess this has slipped through.

Wouls you tell Tesco? I’m surprised that the idea of being sneaky flashed in my mind.

It was a pricier shop as DH ordered a few nicer bottles of wine to enjoy for a family event.

I guess it depends if you're a person of morals or not...

ThejoyofNC · 19/09/2025 20:27

I wouldn't say anything but I guarantee people on here will be along soon to tell you they couldn't sleep at night unless they begged Tesco to take their money.

Childanddogmama · 19/09/2025 20:27

Morally, yes you should.

Orangepate · 19/09/2025 20:27

Honestly, I wouldn’t, not for Tesco and I am generally extremely honest.

roseymoira · 19/09/2025 20:28

No of course not

steponme · 19/09/2025 20:29

Something similar once happened to me and I did tell them because I felt bad for someone who might get in bother. Anyway, they just said to keep it! I was happy Smile

loamy · 19/09/2025 20:29

If it was a small family business i wouldn’t even be tempted. Believe it or not but I genuinely have never stolen in my life. I tend to follow rules. Ie I wouldn’t even do a u turn if there was a no entry sign

I wouldn’t bother. I got a full delivery intended for someone with a similar address but my neighbour accepted it as I was out. We tried to call them and return it when we realised and they ‘just dispose of the food’ and they would redeliver. This was an entire holiday shop for a week for a family

I wouldn't I'm sure Tesco can take the loss

TeaForTheTillermanSteakForTheSun · 19/09/2025 20:30

I would keep the money in the bank for a bit, see what happens, but I wouldn't chase up their mistake.

EnchantedToMeetYou2 · 19/09/2025 20:31

I probably wouldn’t call them and go through all the rigmarole of getting it sorted it to be honest. But I’m likely to feel guilty and have it play on my mind so I’d probably make a donation to our local food bank instead

Tiredofwhataboutery · 19/09/2025 20:33

I wouldn’t say anything so often in a shop the special offer doesn’t go through or you are overcharged or something is missing from the delivery. Or they send you short dated food or ridiculous substitutes that you don’t catch. I just take it as a rebalancing act by the universe.

Peteryourhorseisheree · 19/09/2025 20:34

Tesco won’t be crying over £300.

tothelefttotheleft · 19/09/2025 20:35

I read the other day that the ceo of Tesco was paid 9million last year. ( I haven't fact checked this).

mumofoneAloneandwell · 19/09/2025 20:35

Yabu 🙄

secureyourbook · 19/09/2025 20:36

I definitely wouldn’t be telling them about it but I’d make sure I didn’t spend the money for a while in case they demanded it back.
I ordered an expensive duvet once and they sent two by mistake. I did actually tell the company and they said they’d arrange a courier collection but never did, so I sold it on eBay a year later 😁

Lesina · 19/09/2025 20:38

Not one word would I say :) Enjoy the windfall. Every little helps :)

Happyher · 19/09/2025 20:38

I wouldn’t bother now. If they can’t get their accounting systems in place it’s not your fault. You cancelled the order, they didn’t. That’s their problem not yours. I doubt they even know

DameSylvieKrin · 19/09/2025 20:38

You cancelled it so it was their error in delivering it. It would be unfair of them to charge you for their error and it’s not like they could have taken the items back once they had been in your home

ClaredeBear · 19/09/2025 20:39

It was weeks ago and you’ve eaten it. It was a genuine mix up and a drop int he ocean for them. But yeah, keep the money for a bit just in case.

BoredZelda · 19/09/2025 20:40

Entirely their error. I’d not be telling them.

On a smaller scale, they refunded the mince I bought saying it had been short dated. It was no shorter than usual, and because we always check it, it went in the freezer. I didn’t tell them.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 19/09/2025 20:41

I would. Back in the day when you could still pay by cheque I paid for my weekly shop and the lady on the till had to call the manager because she had entered something wrongly. There was a fair bit of toing and froing and checking the till receipt. Then the manager rang the groceries through, gave me my Clubcard and receipt and I walked out with my shopping. When I got home I realised he had given me my cheque as well. I rang them and said I would bring the cheque the next time I was in the store. I did so a week later and I was told to forget about it as it had been written off. But I felt better for telling them.

Inspiremeaholiday · 19/09/2025 20:43

Hi OP
As someone who recently tried to get a refund reversed from Tesco- apparently once issued its impossible according to customer service.
Different but my driver only showed up with one bag, didn’t realised until we got inside. Contacted Tesco for a refund and was given it immediately contacted them via WhatsApp to reverse it and was told it wasn’t possible.
