Should I tell Tesco I basically stole £300 from them?

Just checked my banking app and had around £300 more than I was expecting. Turns out that one of our shops was cancelled by dh but it still showed up for delivery. Husband wasn’t in so son accepted the order AND we got the refund. So it’s actually funny because our texts shows us getting our wires crossed. Husband thought I had unilaterally decided to reorder. He asked “so you did decide to do the shop in the end” and I answered in the affirmative as I very coincidentally happened to go into M and S for some bits my daughter wanted to try. And it was that I thought he was referring to. I thought her was being sexy cause dd went a bit overboard with the cookies, dips etc

Anyway, it’s been about three weeks. I guess this has slipped through.

Wouls you tell Tesco? I’m surprised that the idea of being sneaky flashed in my mind.

It was a pricier shop as DH ordered a few nicer bottles of wine to enjoy for a family event.

Sarcy not sexy

Ha...I did wonder 🤔 lol

Obsesetits · 20/09/2025 23:44

Nah, Tesco is a huge company they can afford it. If it were a smaller business I’d say yes.

I probably wouldn’t call them and go through all the rigmarole of getting it sorted it to be honest. But I’m likely to feel guilty and have it play on my mind so I’d probably make a donation to our local food bank instead

They don't feel guilty treating their farmers so poorly....so I wouldn't worry about them

AnEnglishCircedee · 21/09/2025 03:16

No do not respond . £300 is nothing to them Just enjoy. .

Bones101 · 21/09/2025 07:45

I was in Tesco last week.

42 euro for a basic cardigan.

Keep it !

God no. On them.

Also their fake none club card prices are a joke.

A bit off topic, but I agree with this. Most of the supermarkets now require you to have some sort of card to "unlock" cheaper prices 🙄.
If you're out and go into a handy supermarket that's not your usual one and don't have a card for them, you could end up paying extra pounds for many items. I've dumped my trolley and left in disgust before.
So they're all harvesting and storing our data; probably selling it too.

Fuck them all and let them sort out their own errors.

Sowhat12345 · 21/09/2025 11:47

Of course you should. It's dishonest. The fact that you're posting this suggests that you know it's wrong

maryberry2 · 21/09/2025 15:30

We had a similar situation. I remember having a delivery which came at the wrong time (bit early) so i wasn't in. They rang to ask if i wanted the shopping and i said yes, but somehow they delivered and also refunded me. I called to say i had been refunded in error. The person i called said thank you for telling them but they had no way of re charging me, so i had a free shop ( around £160)

Toooldforthisshit49 · 21/09/2025 16:22

No way would I call them, the hike in prices that Tesco keep doing they're definitely making enough . It would be different if it was your local corner shop

ILoveWorldCinema · 21/09/2025 20:08

The same thing happend to me with Sainsbury's at the start of the year when it snowed. I called up to pay the money back and it took a few weeks of calls as they had no notes on their system. In retrospect, and if it happened today, I wouldn't call.

jigglybits · 22/09/2025 00:32

This happened to me once. They cancelled and then, they delivered anyway. ( A bit late)
I emailed them and the lady was very confused and nothing came of it. Thank you, Tesco!

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 22/09/2025 07:17

I would happily keep it, and put it towards Christmas presents.

Whichone2024 · 22/09/2025 07:29

Well - they wouldn’t be able to take the order back anyway I guess and you did cancel it so it is their mistake so nothing would change 🤷🏻‍♀️
also I once accidently received two of soemthing from a department store so I called them and said I received it by mistake and they said they would arrange a pick but then they sent another?
so I called them again and they refunded me for the original order so I called them back say I had it but I had to extra they needed to collect and then they refunded me for another order so I stopped after that because I didn’t know how to fix it and I thought they would just keep sending me duplicate items or money 🤷🏻‍♀️

lol! Something similar happened to my aunt - in their case I think they ended up with 3 free vacuum cleaners before giving up! Every time they tried to send one back the company send another one instead!

I would tell them as I am a Catholic and would see it as not being honest. But I would just hope that they say thanks for the honesty and you can keep it. 😉

If it was a small family business i wouldn’t even be tempted. Believe it or not but I genuinely have never stolen in my life. I tend to follow rules. Ie I wouldn’t even do a u turn if there was a no entry sign

They won't miss it and guarantee they'll tell you to keep it. I wouldn't bother if it was me!

I wouldn't feel guilty at all when the Tesco shareholders are making billions year or year and sunning themselves on their Carribbean super yachts!....whilst there are people struggling to put food on the table. I would see the good fortune of £300 as divine justice!

Yes I understand where you are coming from. But I think for me anyway I prefer to be honest. A similar thing happened to me with Amazon and they told me just to keep the money.

Absolutely, you do you X
I would never purposely steal from a person but I just have a thing about Tesco and the way they treat their farmers

On occasion people’s threads have been used as ‘news’ in tabloids. And yes it’s a public forum, but most either post or comment in the belief that the conversation will remain solely on the forum and not become fodder for the front page of a major paper.

Is this indicative of the future of the Observer (The Graun’s used to be sister paper) under the ownership of Tortoise media? Or is this really a Guardian piece? More fluff pieces and less actual journalism. Depressing on so many levels and at a time when the world needs proper journalism more than ever.

Mcoco · 28/09/2025 12:11

Unbelievable! I can't open the link as you need to be a member unfortunately 😔

It is not even that interesting of a moral dilemma. How one can make an article about this is beyond me.

I guess either the material has been nabbed by a “journalist” or possibly the OP was a journalist who made the whole thing up for a story. With no other posting history I suspect the latter though I guess could have been a privacy name change.
