Should I tell Tesco I basically stole £300 from them?

Just checked my banking app and had around £300 more than I was expecting. Turns out that one of our shops was cancelled by dh but it still showed up for delivery. Husband wasn’t in so son accepted the order AND we got the refund. So it’s actually funny because our texts shows us getting our wires crossed. Husband thought I had unilaterally decided to reorder. He asked “so you did decide to do the shop in the end” and I answered in the affirmative as I very coincidentally happened to go into M and S for some bits my daughter wanted to try. And it was that I thought he was referring to. I thought her was being sexy cause dd went a bit overboard with the cookies, dips etc

Anyway, it’s been about three weeks. I guess this has slipped through.

Wouls you tell Tesco? I’m surprised that the idea of being sneaky flashed in my mind.

It was a pricier shop as DH ordered a few nicer bottles of wine to enjoy for a family event.

I wouldn't.

Emma6cat · 19/09/2025 21:11

their error. enjoy

I wouldn't say anything but I guarantee people on here will be along soon to tell you they couldn't sleep at night unless they begged Tesco to take their money.

You often say stuff I find myself nodding along to. This is one of them.

Moonlightfrog · 19/09/2025 21:12

This happened to me once….eventually they noticed and took payment back from my bank.

LaughingAloudAsWeGoInsane · 19/09/2025 21:12

We had similar happen. We cancelled at short notice due to a family emergency and the refund was put in our bank within a day. We were away for a month due to the emergency and thought no more of it until we got home and our son said the food order did arrive the first week we were away. He accepted it thinking we had forgotten to cancel it. I checked our bank a couple of days later and they had obviously realised as they had taken the money back a couple of days before I checked, so a month after refunding it. So, you may still be charged.

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 19/09/2025 21:13

This happened to me but with two pairs of leather boots from H&M premium range. Evri didn’t deliver my order so they resent it. Weeks later the original order arrived, when I tried to return them they said they had no way of refunding them as the order effectively didn’t exist and told me to keep them! 🙌

EmeraldShamrock000 · 19/09/2025 21:16

It happened to me once, the payment was pending for 3 weeks before it bounced back, it was around 120.
I didn't call to rectify the mistake.

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 19/09/2025 21:18

I’d have to tell them. It would really play on my mind if I didn’t. There’s a high chance they’ll just tell you to keep it for free anyway.

BoundaryGirl3939 · 19/09/2025 21:19

'Thou shall not steal'.

BoundaryGirl3939 · 19/09/2025 21:19

'Thou shall not steal'.

Just as well OP didn't steal then.
Tesco erroneously delivered an order that had been cancelled. Their mistake.
And why presume OP (or anyone else) is Christian?

WhereDidSummerGoAgain · 19/09/2025 21:22

Nah, their profits are ginormous. And, do you know how much food they bin each week?!!

Their mistake, your bonus.

I've had a free coat, free mattress and free boots from multinational stores making mistakes over the years. Did I give them back? Did I heck!

On the other hand, when I realised that DD as a toddler had "stolen" a ridiculously expensive baby blanket from an independent shop when I looked down and saw him clutching it in the buggy, a good 15 minutes down the road from the shop, I turned around and walked all the way back to return it.

Keeping stuff from massive companies when they give it to you by accident isn't a moral failing. People who think it is need to do some more research on what these companies take from us.

MoominMai · 19/09/2025 21:23

“Every little helps!” I mean c’mon with a tag line like that I’m sure they’d understand 😅

It’s these little glitches that we live for surely haha. (PS ignore the houlier than thou types who doth protest too much how awful a sin it is to not report 🙄).

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 19/09/2025 21:26

But you've not stolen. You requested a cancellation of an order and they delivered it anyway.

Legally under the consumer contracts regulations 2013 and the consumer rights act 2015 if a contract is cancelled and the seller still delivers the goods these are seen as unsolicited goods.

You're a. Not obliged to pay for them b. Don't have to make any special effort to return them, even if you decide to let Tesco know and c. If Tesco want the shopping back they have to organise collection at their own cost.

Tesco aren't a small business, they should know their obligations under the consumer laws and if they've delivered an order that a cancellation was requested for anyway that's on them not you.

leccybill · 19/09/2025 21:27

I wouldn't tell them. They are so snide with their 3 for 2s with non-offer items mixed in to confuse people deliberately, so I'd put this one down to karma.

Simplestars · 19/09/2025 21:31

Every little helps
Ching ching.

BashfulClam · 19/09/2025 21:31

autienotnaughty · 19/09/2025 21:05

Small business I would. Tesco I’d take the win.
Next once didn’t take payment for my sons suit and just charged me for a carrier bag. Never said a word.

Next once refunded me for an item I hadn’t sent back. I was wearing the hoody when I got the e-mail saying I was getting my refund…I had never requested one!

Gonners · 19/09/2025 21:31

Well, they're not going to want the goods back are they, especially anything frozen or chilled? I once had something similar happen with Sainsburys - I was out when they delivered and MrG accepted the delivery, clearly intended for someone else as none of it was on my order. I rang them up, they said "Whoops, sorry ... just keep it" and delivered the correct order the next day. The neighbours and the food bank did well out of that.

I'd probably tell them.

CharlieKirkRIP · 19/09/2025 21:32

Superdrug staff often don’t register collect items even if told to double check they have input that I’ve collected the items. and then a few days later I get a refund.

They are incredibly rude on the phone and say that this can’t happen and therefore they can’t reverse the refund!

It’s absolutely bizarre.

Hollieandtheivie · 19/09/2025 21:34

I wouldn't worry. You haven't done anything on purpose.

Just make a £300 donation to the Cats Protection and everything will be OK. You'll feel so much better.

I have had this from a similar retailer, can't remember which but definitely not next as I hardly buy from them.

On their email they said that under their obligations blah blah blah, as the product I've purchased not up to their high standards during a quality check they have automatically issued a refund, they apologise that it wasn't up to their usual standards and hope I'll continue shopping with them in the future.

FWIW the item of clothing had absolutely no issues and I'd never complained about it, so I imagine there must be some industry standards or legal requirement to reimburse for bad batches or something. If there isn't, then it was a very kind thing for the company to do.

LightsDifficulty · 19/09/2025 21:37

I would contact them.

Whenlifegiveslemons · 19/09/2025 21:40

I wouldn't to tesco - but I would if it were a smaller business. Times are hard, enjoy the perk - but I'd maybe make a food donation to a local food bank to pay it foward a little.

Hithismyname · 19/09/2025 21:42

No I wouldn't tell them. They won't miss it.
