Should I tell Tesco I basically stole £300 from them?

Just checked my banking app and had around £300 more than I was expecting. Turns out that one of our shops was cancelled by dh but it still showed up for delivery. Husband wasn’t in so son accepted the order AND we got the refund. So it’s actually funny because our texts shows us getting our wires crossed. Husband thought I had unilaterally decided to reorder. He asked “so you did decide to do the shop in the end” and I answered in the affirmative as I very coincidentally happened to go into M and S for some bits my daughter wanted to try. And it was that I thought he was referring to. I thought her was being sexy cause dd went a bit overboard with the cookies, dips etc

Anyway, it’s been about three weeks. I guess this has slipped through.

Wouls you tell Tesco? I’m surprised that the idea of being sneaky flashed in my mind.

It was a pricier shop as DH ordered a few nicer bottles of wine to enjoy for a family event.

Supermarkets steal from us, so 🤷‍♀️

JayJayj · 20/09/2025 18:58

Do not say anything. It’s an error on their part.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 20/09/2025 19:07

I'd give £1 back to my corner shop, but £300 to Tesco ? No.

If it was a small family business i wouldn’t even be tempted. Believe it or not but I genuinely have never stolen in my life. I tend to follow rules. Ie I wouldn’t even do a u turn if there was a no entry sign

They are big enough to absorb this. It’s not dishonest. IT blip in your favour. Don’t sweat this. And l was brought up catholic so l KNOW about guilt. xx

I think Tesco can afford it

Namechangedagain999 · 20/09/2025 19:49

It was there error so i wouldn’t worry. I do think they’ll request money back when they do the accounts at some point. ‘Maybe’.

Who do you think will pay for the missing £300?
Tesco CEO, Tesco shareholders or Tesco customers?
Legal and moral considerations aside, why should I contribute to OP's groceries?

TheNameOfTheDaisy · 20/09/2025 19:59

I’d send them a message explaining it, and I imagine they’ll tell you not to worry about it. In that case I’d donate some of the money to a food bank and treat myself with the rest!

Tesco again

The worker on the till must have had some brain fluff as she forgot to give me my £30 cashback, so I reminded her. She opened the till and handed me the cash. I was checking my receipt at home and noticed that the cashback wasn't noted there. I went back to the store the next day as I didn't want the minimum wage till staff member to get into trouble. I had the devil's own job trying to make the customer service staff understand that I had been given £30 cashback which did not appear on my receipt. I think they probably don't often get people coming back after this sort of situation. The manager of the store came to see me, swapped the money for a Tesco card with a top-up on it and thanked me for my honesty. They had given me a fiver top-up and I was happy with the result.

Some weeks later the customer in front of me had a trolley full of shopping, which came to about £70. It was all cheap stuff, mostly tinned goods. She found that she didn't have her purse with her. The check out had taken a long time as it was and I needed to get back to work, so I told her just to load it in her trolley and I would pick up the bill, and leave her with my business card so that she could arrange to repay me at a more convenient time. I thought that this was the quickest way by far. Just after I paid and given her my business card she found her money so more waiting was involved whilst she counted out notes and coins. She ended up five pounds short, so I said that she could pay me next time she saw me or could phone me to arrange to meet up. I never heard another word. I gained a fiver on one hand and lost a fiver on the other. I have come out even.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 20/09/2025 20:09

God no. On them.

Also their fake none club card prices are a joke.

choccychipcookies1988 · 20/09/2025 20:25

God no don’t tell them. The food would have been wasted if you’d called on the night and sent it back anyway.

Ladygardenerinderby · 20/09/2025 20:58

id defo keep stum but those jealous buggers out there will tell you’re morally wrong .

seasid · 20/09/2025 21:05

If it was a small business that they would take a hit due to this I would say yes. But that money is a spec of dust in the grand scheme of the money that Tesco has - enjoy.

MrsB2603 · 20/09/2025 21:10

It was a mistake, I wouldn’t tell them, you wouldn’t be able to return the food anyway, you didn’t intentionally steal (I once was delivered an extra crate full of random things and my husband took the shop in after I had ordered it, he just assumed I’d ordered these items that we don’t usually buy, Tesco actually phoned me as the driver realised what he did but told me I couldn’t give it back now as it was marked as contaminated, I probably got about £10 worth of free items that day!

TheLastOfTheMohicans · 20/09/2025 21:11

They probably made that back with 1 seconds worth of profit, don't worry about it, a rare win in life

BCBird · 20/09/2025 21:17

Yes. I would definitely tell them.

Anyone want to answer this ?

It doesn't work like that though. Your grocery bills will be the same regardless of OPs actions.

Only because they will have to factor that in, in the great scheme of things, or do you think the Retail Fairy will sprinkle £ dust?

NamelessNancy · 20/09/2025 22:13

The loss has not been caused by anything OP has or has not done. It is entirely Tesco's error. If you're upset about the cost being passed on to other customers that's where the blame lies @grumpygrape

A) it wasn't OPs fault. Lots of people wouldn't even notice. Insurance etc would swallow this for tesco
B) shoplifting costs billions each year. One woman alone stole nearly £50k from tesco last year. If you're that worried go police the shelves yourself. The OP is the last of your worries.

Yes, Tesco made a mistake but OP has benefitted from their error and is under an obligation to contact Tesco because she knows she has benefitted. Just because Tesco deal mostly in perishables and it would be awkward and costly to retrieve the non-perishable items it doesn't negate OP's obligation.

But OP has noticed so is under an obligation to contact Tesco and deal with that.
Insurance and shoplifting comments are irrelevant.

Nah....sod it! Their shareholders make billions in profit every year so you enjoy it!

Childanddogmama · 19/09/2025 20:27

Morally, yes you should.

I would never steal from a person or small business but not informing Tesco they made a mistake (when they make billions of profits year on year every year) would not stop me sleeping at night lol
