Never any toilets anywhere

Is there any country in the world or any region or town/city in the UK that has plentiful, clean available public toilets? Anywhere will do. Thank you.

Found quite a few in rural France.

CMOTDibbler · 19/09/2025 18:20

In my area (south Worcestershire) the public loos are very well looked after and even my little town has two sets so in the town centre you are no more than 5 minutes walk from actual public loos, but no more than a minute from ones in coffee shops/pubs

FettleOfKish · 19/09/2025 18:20

Not technically UK but there’s plenty in Jersey.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 19/09/2025 18:22

There are plenty in Cumbria - not always free though.

FanofLeaves · 19/09/2025 18:26

I literally thought this yesterday when I was seriously caught out in town with my 3 year old. Library shut. McDonald’s has a code on the doors to the toilets so that was out unless I queued up and bought something. Shopping centre too far away for him to hold it and run there on little legs. Park used to have them but shut during Covid, never to reopen. small supermarket no toilets. Ended up nipping into a Wetherspoons but it was just unnecessarily annoying.
no wonder the alleys around the town centre reek of piss 😬

In southern Central and parts of Brittany.

NigelAdjacent · 19/09/2025 18:32

Japan

soupyspoon · 19/09/2025 18:33

I don't mind paying as long as there's a non cash method and also that there isn't piss all over the seat and floor

Japan is blinking amazing, toilets everywhere. Free and clean as well!

Wrenjay · 19/09/2025 18:36

We should campaign for public toilets to be provided: They are not a luxury but a real necessity for everyone. We don't want our alleyways to continue to be public toilets.

MidnightPatrol · 19/09/2025 18:39

I agree it’s terrible.

Also the high incidence of where there are being toilets, those then being closed for some reason.

Turn up at a service station or railways and the toilets are closed - doesn’t leave you with a lot of options…!

TimeForRadio · 19/09/2025 18:40

This is one of the best things about Singapore. Clean too.

I often wonder what the many Japanese tourists make of public toilets elsewhere in the world. French riviera being a classic example earlier this week massive tourist destination with tour coaches aplenty dropping off visitors to a medieval town, 3 portaloos, stinking to high heaven in the heat. Filthy and full of shit. Toilets in cafes always awful as well, same in Spain and Italy

Sherborne in Dorset has quite a few for a small town. They aren’t that nice but they are there.

Teignmouth and Exmouth have some on the sea front. None in Exeter.

ladybirdsanchez · 19/09/2025 18:45

I agree! It's terrible that it's so difficult to find a free, public toilet these days.

A lot have been sold off and turned into other things. Apparently it's very expensive to provide public toilets, although I'm not sure why.

youalright · 19/09/2025 18:47

Yanbu where i live their is one set of toilets in town and you have to have a 20p cash to use and their gross. Sometime you get lucky and can get a few people in for your 20p. I don't mind paying but I don't always have change

sminted · 19/09/2025 18:47

St Ives had loads and all but one was a reasonable standard

arethereanyleftatall · 19/09/2025 18:48

Where I live is fine. You can go in m&s or Waitrose, Costa etc - I’m in an affluent town in north in Uk

I suspect they think we're all filthy. Going to Japan made me think that and I'm British! It was a glimpse of a much more civilised society. I'd like to think we'll be like that one day, but I doubt it - it certainly won't happen in my lifetime. We have no pride in our surroundings in this country. There is no litter in Japan, people clean up after themselves. They're just more respectful as a culture.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 19/09/2025 18:51

The ones on Barry Island prom impressed me

Icecreamandcoffee · 19/09/2025 18:51

Jersey but it was years ago.

@WrenjayUnfortunately lack of toilets affect women more than men so there is no appetite to create more public toilets. Men are happy to piss in alleys and on public drains so they see no issues.

@MidnightPatrol I'm also absolutely fed up of places closing their toilets too. Our 2 supermarkets have decided to close their toilets since the summer. Asda claim theirs are "broken" and have not been fixed since June. Morrison's have closed theirs with no reason given since beginning of August. The council blocks are filthy and sometimes open and sometimes closed due to "ongoing staffing challenges" and have been since last April (we live in a bankrupt council area). They were closed most of the summer. The bus station has locked their toilets. All the shops with a toilet have now got codes on then or strictly enforcing customer use only. Going out in town with small children, during pregnancy or if you have any toilet related issues is hard work. The urinary leash is very strong in our area.

sminted · 19/09/2025 18:52

most Waitroses have a toilet & the newer Lidls sometimes do.

This is it, who has any cash these days?

@ladybirdsanchezyou’re so right. Japan reminded me of how things should be and one of the reasons we don’t have decent toilets is because the minority don’t look after them
so they close them for everyone else. The same with littering, no bins in Japan, you just take your litter home. It’s not rocket science is it!
