Never any toilets anywhere

Is there any country in the world or any region or town/city in the UK that has plentiful, clean available public toilets? Anywhere will do. Thank you.

Top of the Royal Mile, just before you get to the castle. Steps on the south side leading down to Johnston terrace. Toilets half way down.

Thank you. We went to the castle, so used the loos in there, but did have to say that we've never been to a place so badly signposted before! (I did say it was a bit of a grumpy trip, didn't I?) Other than that we loved it!

They definitely are but they shut early as I mentioned.

Well my definition of early. around 6 I think.

Fair enough, think I went in at about 4pm

The Isle of Man. Absolutely hands down the winner for me. Or possibly joint winner.

Like Jersey (hi!) it’s not in the UK but is part of the ‘Islands of Britain’ (common travel area) and caters all year round for visitors and locals.

There are decent toilets everywhere, from the top of the mountain to the bottom of the Island. Also, cafés and pubs usually don’t mind you using their loos because you might not be a customer today but you might be tomorrow.

Fastyr mie.

Im surprised you can get into your local council offices without a pass. Wouldn’t be possible in any of the LAs local to me, unless it was an office with a public area ie housing office.

I normally just sneak into a pub somewhere. Yes, I get that the toilets are provided for their customers, but if there’s no alternative then I’m not going to wet myself.

Must admit I’m surprised at the poster saying there were plentiful clean public toilets in rural France. Not been there for a very long time, but when I did, they were awful, quite disgusting.

It's not the offices, it is the Town Hall which is an old building used for arts, exhibitions and exercise classes.

caringcarer · 20/09/2025 20:01

Use the Toilet Finder App.

scalt · 20/09/2025 20:02

I sneak into pubs, even the ones which say “toilets for customers only”. I go in confidently, rather than furtively. It’s part of feeling rebellious after the Covid tyranny, and the government-imposed “urinary leash” of closing public toilets, so it was harder to go far. I feel no shame about doing this, even in the extremely weird world than mumsnet lives in when it comes to toilets.

I used to be a driving instructor in south London, where public toilets (especially with parking available) were extremely rare. I had to sneak into pubs for my own dignity, or ask my pupils if I could use their toilets, which I did sometimes.

cheesycheesy · 20/09/2025 20:04

Loads when I went on holiday in New Zealand

intrepidpanda · 20/09/2025 20:06

I only shop in shopping centres or towns with a shopping centre because of this.

RoverReturn · 20/09/2025 20:08

Same here, Scalt. The vast majority of people working in pubs don't care.

I have in the past bought a packet of peanuts but I'm not going to buy something I don't want ..

UnderThePressure · 20/09/2025 20:39

I have just returned from a holiday to Cornwall. I am considered disabled with multiple digestive issues so I only go somewhere with good public facilities. As a couple of people have mentioned so far, St Ives has lots of facilities, some pay by card, but some free. Also Looe, Polperro, Mevagissey, Fowey, Boscastle & Tintagel were great.
I also think the New Forest has good loos, Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst, Fordingbridge, Ringwood, Lymington and Burley were the places I visited.

stuckdownahole · 20/09/2025 20:51

It is so unbelievably crap that so many councils have closed their public toilets; I do not know why legislation can't be passed requiring local authorities to provide toilets in town centres, but allowing them to charge to cover the cost.

Or rather, I do know (or can guess) ... probably because it would be discriminatory against the homeless, people on low incomes, etc. who would struggle to pay. So for fear of excluding some people, we exclude everyone.

ThePoshUns · 20/09/2025 21:04

I remember how frustrating lockdown was when public toilets were closed and having to run the gauntlet of coopying
down in places which was humiliating but made me realise how important good public toilets are a necessity for women.

Do you still have to squat over a hole in the ground 😆

Not since about ten years ago - the queue for the normal toilet was huge but le shot was empty and clean. It helped that I was wearing a loose skirt.
The others were normal toilets to use - some were compost toilets but had clean water and sink for hand washing.

StarsInTheSkies · 21/09/2025 08:34

There were lots nice and free loos in the skiing resort in Austria (Obergurgl). At the top and at the bottom of the mountain at the major lift stations. I guess people are paying for the lift passes which helps with that, but you didn’t need a lift pass to get into the loos in the village. I think I noticed because it’s so unusual in the UK.

Back to Exeter I have forgotten the Guildhall which has public loss that are fine. You can also go into John Lewis or Marks & Spencer‘s if they are open. The cathedral has loos, but you have to have been in to an event to get the code which changes regularly.

Sherborne in Dorset has quite a few for a small town. They aren’t that nice but they are there.

Teignmouth and Exmouth have some on the sea front. None in Exeter.

We used a public toilet in Exeter, it was by the car park (or maybe at the bottom of it). 20p and they had a handy cash machine next to the gates. Pretty swanky inside.

My dad has long-term urinary uncontinence because of a chronic illness. He has Toilet Map downloaded on his phone, which gives him the location of the nearest loo, but quite often they are closed or in poor condition, or expensive to enter!

London is terrible for loos. Often a pound to use.

I remember Sandown Isle of Wight about 15 years ago, on the coast five minutes from the Zoo having nice loos. There’s a cafe nearby.

Yes, this is what I find, I have the toilet app but its not that reliable and when you're desparate and find that they're shut I could cry!!

We should campaign for public toilets to be provided: They are not a luxury but a real necessity for everyone. We don't want our alleyways to continue to be public toilets.

Absolutely agree.

one thing that really caused me issues in covid was the lack of toilets. At that time I developed fill on adenomyosis and needed the loo every 20 minutes. Even when we were let out I got stuck with a stay at home order by default because of it!

DancingFerret · 21/09/2025 10:16

"It is so unbelievably crap that so many councils have closed their public toilets..."

Priceless!😂 (Sorry)

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 21/09/2025 10:44

Im in Australia atm. They are bloody everywhere! Even at picnic sites(that have a roof and bbqs) there's some. And generally clean with loo roll. And shopping centres-loads!

BenFannag · 21/09/2025 10:52

Have people got radar keys? We use them here on the Island in some locations (I’m thinking Ramsey St Paul’s) and they’re used throughout the UK.

It means the accessible toilets for people with disabilities and who need more space are available 24/7. Very handy. You can buy them online.

Moghrey mie.

notedbiscuits · 21/09/2025 11:00

Many areas have closed their public toilets due to vandalism. How low do you need to go to vandalise those? Or as part of cost cutting. Read one council closing a block of public toilets is saving them about £15k a year. I bet they waste more than that in red tape in a week.

Toilets in bus stations are sometimes locked as druggies get their fix in them. My hairdresser's DD works in a large Greggs with seating for 70-80 people and they have a toilet. They have permanently closed the toilet as druggies got their fix and homeless people slept in the loo. This Greggs is in a shopping centre but the loos are the far corner of the SC. Whereas Greggs is the 2nd shop.

If I am desperate for the loo when in a different town, I usually go into McDs or Wetherspoons. Both busy and won't notice me using the loos. Have been to other countries' McDs where they put codes on the doors. I just buy something like some fries to get the receipt and therefore a customer.

There is an out of town retail park and there are no loos, apart from the ones in McDs, Tesco and and an eating place.

notedbiscuits · 21/09/2025 11:08

My DF has got a Radar key. It was his late DM's. Proved useful as he has bladder issues - had TURTB earlier this month and get the results later this week. He suddenly needs the loo. Sometimes we have been to places where the normal toilets are locked but not the disabled. He has let parents with small DC to use the disabled loo and when they leave, locks the door.

That is really lovely of him - such a community-spirited thing to do!

I can’t see why they can’t be provided if we pay enough for them. If it is card pay £1, or even more would be OK - better then having to wee in a field.
