Never any toilets anywhere

Is there any country in the world or any region or town/city in the UK that has plentiful, clean available public toilets? Anywhere will do. Thank you.

Norway is also very civilised when it comes to toilets. You just need to use your debit card.

Monaco was, in my experience, the worst. I remember the police officers proudly telling me there were zero public facilities.

Agree, Norway -
toilets clean, available
it seems a place where the people there respect the spaces and don’t litter, wreck things in public spaces like we see in UK

i suspect UK public toilets are declining as there is less Public money to maintain them and people are grim and wreck / deface / leave filthy

Deadringer · 20/09/2025 16:57

Bratislava is one i remember having clean toilets, there was an attendant and a charge of 2 euro i think it was.Worst toilets I ever saw was in a village in France, was literally a hole in the floor and unfortunately non of the previous occupants had decent aim, disgusting. We were in Malta for a week and got buses in and out of the centre of Valletta most days, the whole time that we were there the womens toilets were out of order, while the men's were in constant use. Very fucking annoying.

CarlaH · 20/09/2025 16:58

Almost every park around here, even quite small ones, have a toilet block. Are they open? No they are not. Some haven't been opened in the forty odd years I have lived here but quite a few were open until covid but were closed and bolted shut then and have not reopened. Unsurprisingly both men and women can be seen publicly urinating although fortunately not all that often.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 20/09/2025 17:00

Did you know...if you enter 'Toilet' into Google Maps it will show where the toilets are near you. However there is no Hygiene Rating like restaurants have. 🙁

(If you look at the satellite view on Google Maps you can also find bushes. )😇

Ely, East Cambs. Free parking, too.

BorneBackCeaselesslyIntoThePas · 20/09/2025 17:03

The website loocodes.appspot.com allegedly has the code for many toilets, or get a Radar key (we have one in the car, one in my wife’s bag and one in her jacket. Just in case

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 20/09/2025 17:06

I'm just back from a rather grumpy trip to Edinburgh where we searched fruitlessly for a public toilet on the Royal Mile and the tourist information place went so far as to have a 'no toilets' sign in the window.

NancyJoan · 20/09/2025 17:07

Our council publishes a list of all the loos available, including times. Included are the bus station, libraries, several university buildings, the museum, the castle, the indoor market. There are fairly slim picking in the evening, and some are closed on a Sunday. In the city centre, John Lewis, M&S, the two big shopping centres, Waterstones and the theatre all have loos that are free to use. Our city has some really lovely, spacious parks, and loos there are not easily accessible, which I discovered during my lockdown walks, which I had to plot carefully to take in strategic stops.

Katemax82 · 20/09/2025 17:09

Ashford in Kent has enough when I take my daughter to town

purpleme12 · 20/09/2025 17:12

In Our (small) city
When I need the toilet I can go to Sainsbury's, Asda, m&s, there's some toilets in both shopping centres, there some toilets in the bus station (although think you might have to pay there), there's some toilets in the building next to the bus station, there some toilets in the train station and there's some toilets in the library.
I don't think that's too bad

Found quite a few in rural France.

Do you still have to squat over a hole in the ground 😆

Try using your local Town Hall toilets. In a local town to me I have found their toilets clean and user friendly. If your Council won't provide public facilities use theirs.

Im surprised you can get into your local council offices without a pass. Wouldn’t be possible in any of the LAs local to me, unless it was an office with a public area ie housing office.

I normally just sneak into a pub somewhere. Yes, I get that the toilets are provided for their customers, but if there’s no alternative then I’m not going to wet myself.

Must admit I’m surprised at the poster saying there were plentiful clean public toilets in rural France. Not been there for a very long time, but when I did, they were awful, quite disgusting.

REDB99 · 20/09/2025 17:17

I live on the NE coast and you can walk along the coast and come across plenty of public loos, all free and perfectly useable.

Yes I have the toilet app. Often unreliable. I remember a long walk in Sidmouth which ended with me nearly wetting myself but expecting the toilet as per the app in the village at the top of Sidmouth (cant remember the name of it now) to save me

Toilet not open and clearly hadnt been for yonks

Went into a pub across the road where of course then you have to buy something, so the walk back was similar with me nearly wetting myself.

Hong Kong! Always a public toilet within short walking distance, all on google maps

Yes not too bad as long as you're there when they're open

I live on the outskirts of a town, the main shopping area I can walk in about an hour, 3 miles away or so, a bit more for some bits, bit less for others.

By the time I have walked an hour I am busting. If I go to one part of that shopping bit, there are no loos, there are only some in the shopping mall and they shut at certain times. There is a big Tesco but last time I went the toilets were out of order, I had walked a different route, 5 miles that day and was busting, so painful.

If I’m in a town without loos, I will nip into a pub, coffee shop or hotel.

Which stretch?

The toilets in Beadnell and Seahouses shut fairly early, are there any in Bamburgh? I dont remember any.

In the other direction we walked from Beadnell to Low Newton and I think that had public toilets but it was a long way. Not sure about High Newton. There was a long queue though for the Low Newton loos.

It’s a bit late now, but The Mocha cafe pn the front (by the Elisbeth hotel) has free to use toilets (go straight through, up three or four steps and turn right)

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 20/09/2025 17:35

I went in the toilet in Chester railway station last night thinking it would be better than the one on the train. It was absolutely disgusting, I can't remember ever going in such a filthy, neglected public toilet anywhere. I came out wondering what all the foreign tourists who pass through there must think - weirdly, I felt quite ashamed!

I've got say I'm not a frequent user of public loos, so I can't say I've noticed anywhere that's particularly outstanding in their provision. But I'm enjoying reading other people's experiences.

RoverReturn · 20/09/2025 17:48

I tend to go into coffee shops if there are no public loos around. If they are staffed by young people they tend not to care if you are just nipping in to use the loo.

Largish bookstores , M and S also have toilets.

Yes Sidmouth itself wasnt the issue, we had walked along the coast, then onwards to the river upwards, through a green park bit, cant quite remember the name of where we ended up

I've been to Seahouses a couple of months back and there were definitely public loos - quite a few in a block.

They definitely are but they shut early as I mentioned.

Top of the Royal Mile, just before you get to the castle. Steps on the south side leading down to Johnston terrace. Toilets half way down.
