Never any toilets anywhere

Is there any country in the world or any region or town/city in the UK that has plentiful, clean available public toilets? Anywhere will do. Thank you.

I have noticed this over the past few years too, what are people expected to do? Public toilets are hardly some kind of luxury.

There are these “Just can’t wait” cards like this https://www.crohnsandcolitis.org.uk/get-involved/become-a-member/cant-wait-card?_gl=1pm3w8e_upMQ.._gsMQ.._gaMTg5Njc0MzY3Ny4xNzU4NDU1NDY5_ga_5THF1XE73Q*czE3NTg0NTU0NjgkbzEkZzAkdDE3NTg0NTU0NjgkajYwJGwwJGgw&gclid=Cj0KCQjwxL7GBhDXARIsAGOcmIMErBhX9jOwMJxDPK-cDeHTJlZPrdWN5TorbCvVkB9OMEeEyKP-aTMaAgQPEALw_wcB&gbraid=0AAAAApU1kgiBlvjJAgec97JmohLIEVfzn to allow these people to use their toilets.

Many businesses don’t allow them to use their toilets for security purposes. For example my friend who works for a supermarket had their cafe closed for good. Toilets were at the back of the cafe, so coned off. They are in the process of moving the toilets to a better location. They are not allowed to take customers to the staff toilets as in order to get to the toilets, need to walk past areas with high value items stored. This decision was a head office decision nothing to do with management at stores.

Though allow staff’s families use the toilets

For some reason it never occurred to me to get a radar key for my mum. Now ordered.

TheDayBeforeYouCame · 21/09/2025 13:14

Budapest had a “use our toilet” scheme. Signs in widows of shops/cafes/bars so no need to buy anything. I thought this was a really good idea. It meant we stayed lk ger j. The shopping areas and as a consequence spent more even if not in the place we used the loos.

dizzydizzydizzy · 21/09/2025 13:15

Singapore. Everything is very civilised and clean. There are also water fountains everywhere.

You won't regret it!

Many years ago the public toilets in our small town which had been used for donkeys years without problem were vandalised. Pans and sinks smashed, cistern pulled off the walls. They were repaired and the same thing happened. After repairing the whole lot a further twice the council shut them down as it cost too much to keep repairing. The vandals will probably be pensioners by now and sometimes when I walk past where the toilets used to be I sincerely hope that they have been in town, desperate for the toilet and reflecting on their past actions.

stuckdownahole · 21/09/2025 13:28

Not directly related, but I turned into One Of Those People who complain, decades ago, when visiting a business partner / supplier on behalf of my company. They had premises on a big building on an industrial estate a mile out of the nearest town. I drove 100 miles for a meeting there, arrived quarter of an hour early and was told to wait in reception for the relevant person to collect me and she would be "just a few minutes" as she was on a call.

Me: "No problem, may I just use your loo while I'm waiting?"
Receptionist: "I'm afraid not as you have to pass through security doors to get to it. When Ms X comes to collect you, she will show you where the loo is".

20 minutes passed, so the person I'm meeting is now late, and I'm getting increasingly uncomfortable with a full bladder.

Me: "Please can I just use the loo? I wouldn't ask if it wasn't urgent".
Receptionist (with patronising head tilt): "No, I'm sorry, that's our policy, she'll just be a few minutes so not long for you to wait" (tinkly laugh).

Then of course, when Ms X finally showed up, I had to awkwardly explain that she had to take me to the toilet before we could do anything else.

Driving 100 miles home I had time to get annoyed. If an adult asks twice to use the loo, anyone must realise it's urgent, surely? Wrote to the CEO and asked whether they felt this was welcoming or inclusive, as some people have conditions that mean they can't wait 20 minutes. Policy was changed.

My neighbour is a courier for businesses. He has his regular places he visits about 3 times a week and uses their toilets when delivering. Some clients he delivers to does not let any delivery driver to use their loos that was put in place during covid. Why hasn't this been lifted? Sometimes your delivery drivers deliver your work. Without them, you won't have work.

If you are a business that has many courier deliveries, please let them use your toilets!

This is why around industrial estates and lay-bys you see bottles filled with wee - aka Driver's Tizer. I don't understand why can't the couriers just tip their contents from these bottles down drains.

scalt · 21/09/2025 14:23

@stuckdownahole i keep thinking about how I would have kicked up a fuss about that: threatening to ask at a nearby rival business, for example.

notedbiscuits · 21/09/2025 14:36

@stuckdownahole when I have been to interviews, I try to visit the loos beforehand as nerves get to my bladder. Sometimes, the loos are by the reception area - fine. Some are behind doors which require ID passes to enter area where the loos are.

Never had an issue with reception staff allowing me to go to the loo, they swipe their pass to allow me to use the loos which are usually a few steps from the doors and point to the button I need to press to open the doors to go back to reception.

Not technically UK but there’s plenty in Jersey.

I was going to say the same, and they're free, too. Same in Guernsey.

I've not been to Scotland for a little while but I thought they were well provided for, although you had to pay. But I don't mind as long as they are available.

I was thinking the other day that we need more compost loos. They might not be very nice, but any port in a storm and they don't really need maintaining. They'd be ideal in country parks and the like.

StarsInTheSkies · 19/09/2025 18:44

Sherborne in Dorset has quite a few for a small town. They aren’t that nice but they are there.

Teignmouth and Exmouth have some on the sea front. None in Exeter.

Although Teignbridge council is consulting on closing the loos in Teignmouth. Arseholes. They have been vandalised a few times though.

dynamiccactus · 21/09/2025 14:50

The other morning I was walking to my local railway station and despite going before I left the house I needed to go half way to the station. The only place open at that time is McDonalds, and you needed a code to use the loos. I don't know f you always need a code or it was just at that time in the morning,

I think you might find yourself disappointed if you come back to Scotland. With the exception of a couple of of loos off the A9 the council has closed the local toilets, even the ones you paid 50p for!

MyNeedyLilacBird · 21/09/2025 15:11

Not long back from singapore and toilets everywhere. Fantastic for me as a woman with a terribly weak bladder

Iloveeverycat · 21/09/2025 15:15

Like a previous poster mentioned, St Ives is surprisingly well supplied with public loos which seems especially rare for the seaside.
So does Hayling Island they have loads.

notedbiscuits · 21/09/2025 15:27

If visiting a large city, mainly abroad, use toilets in hotel reception areas. Go to a hotel and usually there is a sign with directions to toilets and other facilities at the entrance. These toilets are free, clean and very good.

The hotel reception staff don’t bat an eyelid as besides when you stay at a hotel, they may have 20 odd reception staff but only see 4/5 when you walk past or talking to them.

@stuckdownahole i keep thinking about how I would have kicked up a fuss about that: threatening to ask at a nearby rival business, for example.

There is a big Tesco about five minutes' drive away; I should have told them I was going there to use the loo so would be late for the scheduled meeting. My annoyance arose from being treated like an irritating child pleading for a biscuit ten minutes before dinner time. Using the toilet is a need, not some kind of passing whim.

dynamiccactus · 21/09/2025 21:33

Exactly. Something (male) councillors need to get a grip on.
