To be really sad at the way my 17 year old DD was treated when she broke down at a roundabout

My DD passed her driving test 2 weeks ago. She's driving my car around on the days I work from home.

Anyway, at rush hour after sixth form, she broke down on a busy roundabout in the middle of the city (the clutch had gone).

She put her emergency lights on and called me. It was very obvious she had broken down. Honestly I was so shocked to hear the beeping, people shouting at her and she said other were laughing as they went past too.

My daughter isn't excessively sensitive, but she was really shaken up.... not by the clutch going, but at the anger people had towards her for breaking down. There are several lanes of traffic, so people could get around her.

Thankfully an older man eventually stopped and managed to get the car into gear and down a side road until I got to her and Greenflag arrived to take it to a garage. I'm so grateful to this guy who had a daughter similar age.

AIBU to be disgusted at the way people treated her? I feel like society has got worse!

I broke down as the first car at a set of traffic lights in a right turn only lane, on a hill. My gearstick cable had snapped so my car wouldn’t stay in gear. I put my hazard lights on straightaway so it was clear as day that something wasn’t right. The amount of drivers that gave me abuse because they had to find a way round me…I presume because I was driving a Fiat 500 and they’d decided I was simply a terrible female driver who couldn’t do a hill start!
A lovely pair of cyclists stopped to help me get my car round the corner - that’s what I like to focus on.

I’ve cone to realise, as I’ve got older, most people are arseholes. And given half the chance most people are dishonest & greedy. Not everyone. Unfortunately your daughter met that ratio of people when she broke down. It’s a sad, angry place out there.

Thank you again everyone! I'm so sorry for anyone that has experienced this.

Clutch was fixed today (£500 Sad) and she's going to drive to her weekend job tomorrow. As you all say, best she just gets driving again straight away and put it behind her

Sadly the county has got selfish including on the roads. Too many people so self centred and in a rush has led to numerous car accidents here which have closed a couple of the major roads on a weekly basis. Sadly some have resulted in fatalities.

I am so sorry your DD had to experience this and so soon after her test. Thankfully not all hero’s wear capes.

Due to people scamming and doing fake break downs, many kind people are too scared to stop which the wankers beeping wouldn’t do anyway.

That's awful, OP.

Several of DD2's friends have just passed their test, DD2 will be a learner next year and I'd hate to think of anyone being abusive to a young person for breaking down.
