I took down some flags and DH wasn’t happy

On my commute today, I noticed someone had hung three large St George flags on a bridge coming out of our village. They have been popping up everywhere but this particular instance I thought “I’m not having that”. On the way home I pulled over and took them down.

when I got home and DH asked why I was binning three large flags I told him and he.. had some interesting opinions. He told me I shouldn’t be pissing off people in the village, that they have every right to hang an England flag in England, and that I’m being too political.

For a start, I would argue that I’ve always been quite strongly opinionated so he shouldn’t be surprised I did it.

Just as others have the right to their opinion I have mine. We have people in the village who are migrants… why should they have to look at that. It’s clear why they were hanging there given what’s going on at the moment and I’ve never see a flag hanging in the village in the decade we’ve been here so why else would they be there now.

I’m just so disappointed with it all. With the UK, with DH.

Next time maybe I’ll add to the collection instead. 🇬🇷🇮🇪🇮🇳🇦🇫🇧🇸🇵🇰🇪🇸🇸🇩🇿🇦🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The faux naivety is just annoying. Nobody buys it.

Good job I'm not selling it then, eh?

It’s our problem that outside of sporting events, the England flag has mainly been used by far right nationalist and Neo-Nazi groups in England?

And the fact that black people in America take the confederate flag to mean something else other than Southern pride and unity is a them problem…right?

Not sure how you’ve concluded that the universally accepted meaning of the England flag, given that on this thread it’s not even majority accepted to mean just that. Perhaps someone should tell Tommy Robinson about this universally accepted meaning - he seems to see it as a symbol of revolution against immigration and asylum…

Revolution? He’s a grifter who has a history of assault (including of police, passport fraud, mortgage fraud, stalking and anti-Muslim hatred.

He was living it large during the riots at a £400 per night hotel in Cyprus funded by his buffoons and crones. Let him take their money though. Couldn’t happen to nicer people.

As an immigrant, St George flags flying at half mast, indicate to me, that people feel grief/ anger at the fact that immigrants like me and my family, (who work to support the NHS), are here in the UK. So thank you for taking em down, I find the Stand up to Racism groups so consoling. Normal flag flying, full mast, no issue. Maybe England needs a St Patrick’s Day? As in a St George’s day and have all those celebrations, to express all that national pride?

We do have St George’s Day! It’s just not like modern St Patrick’s Day celebrations which originated with the brewers of Guinness who started giving out free stuff to promote the beer and it’s got bigger from there.

💯💯💯👏👏👏
Couldn't agree more. These reactions are stoking the division.
Some people in this country are getting VERY angry and are starting to feel they have nothing to lose. I really wouldn't want to push them too much...

Tommy Robinson, Nigel Farage and Elon Musk and their ilk are the ones pushing them. Stirring them up. Egging them on. They are the ones stoking the division.

Perhaps you're one of the ones actively stirring things up, or perhaps you just can't see how you're being manipulated. It doesn't matter.

Nobody is being forced into the arms of the far right. That is just a myth that people like to promote. People are responsible for their own choices. Some of them are choosing hate.

No, that's YOUR interpretation. It's really just a flag.

Good for you, I took some down last week but DH won’t let me take the ladders out to get the ones on the lamposts 😂

DH won't let you?

So flags are bad. But controlling husbands are perfectly acceptable.

Is that a threat? What else is going to happen to non-whites following the already heinous rape and murder attempts?

It certainly does sound like an implied threat. "Shut up or our bully boys will start attacking both migrants and white left wing people."

LittleChopper · 18/09/2025 23:24

If they were up all the time as a sign of lovely ol’ Englande, fine. But they are popping up everywhere as a sign of “get out our country” by a load of willy waving racists.

People who have risked their lives don’t need that message.

People want to put them up on their own property for the love of Blighty ? Fine, you go for it. But not public places as a sign of hate. Not in my village.

…You are in England. I’m in Australia and I would like to see that if I was visiting. It would be quaint.

I think you are being ridiculous and what you did was an act of aggression.

Also thank you for coming to this country and working in the NHS, without migrant workers it wouldn’t exist. I honestly don’t think everyone hanging the George Cross flag hates migrants.

Just 25 arrests at Saturday's UTK rally out of a crowd of thousands of people from all creeds, colours and backgrounds. Yeah, sounds really 'hateful'. 🤔

But, whatever... carry on spouting this nonsense. The more you continue, the closer old Farage gets to occupying No.10. But while scratching your head wondering: 'How the hell did that happen!?' do remember to take a look in the mirror.

It's definitely a threat. And I've seen quite a few comments along these lines since the Tommy Robinson march. It seems to be the new strategy.

This is the centre of London - one of the most iconic images of Great Britain 🇬🇧

But that pretty picture of the flags line the mall is not what is being discussed here and I think you know that.

It won't be my fault if idiots and racists vote in a far right government. However, you might want to keep that mirror handy for the moment when you realise what you've done.

This brown girl commends OP. Calling anti-racists virtue signallers is just right wing attempts to shame decent people into becoming not decent human beings.

Not a threat of any kind... just given the depth of feeling, I am somewhat surprised we haven't seen mass civil unrest already.
But I suppose Saturday's largely peaceful rally proved significantly that those on the right are not the 'angry' ones.
No, they'll just quietly express their frustrations at the ballot box.
Night, night!

Sparklybutold · 19/09/2025 02:06

Honestly your decision to take down the flags is ridiculous. The reasons people are putting up flags vary massively - people are not monolithic. You have assumed the worst and achieved what exactly?

Night, night!

Nothing to say about the rape of an Asian woman then or the forcing of a black boy to kiss a shoe, then? Thought not! Nighty night!
