I took down some flags and DH wasn’t happy

1000 replies

LittleChopper · 18/09/2025 23:13

On my commute today, I noticed someone had hung three large St George flags on a bridge coming out of our village. They have been popping up everywhere but this particular instance I thought “I’m not having that”. On the way home I pulled over and took them down.

when I got home and DH asked why I was binning three large flags I told him and he.. had some interesting opinions. He told me I shouldn’t be pissing off people in the village, that they have every right to hang an England flag in England, and that I’m being too political.

For a start, I would argue that I’ve always been quite strongly opinionated so he shouldn’t be surprised I did it.

Just as others have the right to their opinion I have mine. We have people in the village who are migrants… why should they have to look at that. It’s clear why they were hanging there given what’s going on at the moment and I’ve never see a flag hanging in the village in the decade we’ve been here so why else would they be there now.

I’m just so disappointed with it all. With the UK, with DH.

Next time maybe I’ll add to the collection instead. 🇬🇷🇮🇪🇮🇳🇦🇫🇧🇸🇵🇰🇪🇸🇸🇩🇿🇦🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Absolutely spot on 💯

Thank you , it's a shame my post was deleted. And I'm unsure why it was, maybe it was reported because some people didn't like the truth.

So much for freedom of speech

sunandfizz · 19/09/2025 12:16

As I said, 100k or 150k people... so what? It's a drop in the ocean compared to the 12 million people of London. More people would turn up to see Ariana Grande in concert.

ClafoutisSurprise · 19/09/2025 12:16

Lemonandorangecheescake · 19/09/2025 12:05

The point is a message to the Government that the people of this Country will unite to show the Government that they won't be silenced any longer. People have lobbied their MP's tirelessly, to no avail.

Because no one has listened, people have resorted to protesting (peacefully) and the flags represent unity (not racism).
I'm sure next year's march will be twice as big, if not bigger. Good.

So, it's not about proudly displaying a symbol that had been unfairly suppressed, as the part of your post I quoted suggested.

If you now accept that there has not been a long-standing ban on, or cancellation of, the flag, then perhaps we can move past the belittling and facile comments so many posters are making about people being afraid of their own flag and actually talk about what is going on here.

If unity is indeed the aim, I'm sure we can look forward to respectful dialogue and trying to reach consensus.

Whatsallthisthen2025 · 19/09/2025 12:13

Yep, the highest estimate by the people who loathe anyone who flies their own flag in their own country, calls anyone who disagrees with them slurs and is desperate to shut down any and all peaceful protest was 150,000 - there were a LOT more than that.

And, as I said earlier, the only reason why flying the flag of your own country in your own country could ever be considered controversial is if you are under enemy occupation.

Precisely!

People are so tired of this lie being repeated.

Immigration did not build this country. British people built Britain.

People resent being lied to about their history and about themselves. You might think it’s a noble lie, but it’s a lie nonetheless.

Please go and read a history book.

Where are the jobs exactly? Companies are closing, businesses are folding and people losing their jobs.
Migrants might be working as they should be and that is good and they are welcome to be here.
I object to scores of young men coming over on boats that disaapear into society doing fuck all except perhaps doing drug runnering and the like.

Yes, of course, because the indigenous work-shy population doesn't do drug-running, do they? 🙄

That's what a majority of people want, respectful dialogue. But even the Government have accused those wanting to respectfully voice their opinions as being 'far right' .

It's crazy making.

The faux naivety of people saying "why does a flag offend you?" is becoming so infuriating.

If you're offended by the UK flag on a public building or people waving England flags at a football match then yeah - you're being silly.

But I don't want to see a flag draped on every lamppost and tree - if nothing else they soon look tattered and dirty and a complete mess! Why should the rest of us have to put up with our landscape and surroundings looking like this? I want to see a tree looking like a tree!

A country that takes pride in its history and landscape doesn't do this to itself.

Except when it's Remembrance weekend... Or the anniversary of D Day... Or the anniversary of VE day...etc... Then the racist display of flag-flying & dressing in flag-themed attire is actively encouraged.

Yeah - Stick it to those pesky Germans. But apparently that's NOT racist.

ain't folk peculiar...

saraclara · 18/09/2025 23:40

Anyone who's been flying a flag for years - fine, whatever floats your boat.

Anyone who's suddenly bought flags in the last three weeks and is flying them/putting them up in the streets) painting them is, 99% likely to be doing so in response to the boat people thing, and unless they can convince me otherwise, I'll assume racism.

Yes exactly. We’ve always had loads of flags around here, on flagpoles, on private property. They look cheerful. It’s not the same as graffiti on mini roundabouts or co-opting the flag by Stephen Yaxley Lennon’s lot to put it up on property which doesn’t belong to them, often with an intention to menace certain groups of people.

So it's a good enough place to come to but not good enough to fly its flag? Are all the anti-flaggers also removing the Ukrainian and Palestinian/Hamas flags, the latter being offensive to the Jewish members of our community. The usual double standards.

My neighbour has a proper flagpole and he'll be flying a St George's flag tomorrow, he's not ashamed to be supporting the Red Roses, he has quite a collection of flags, the local football team, a Union Jack, a county flag and even a Christmas flag, all of which appear when appropriate.

And nor should he be ashamed to show his support for the Red Roses. Flying an appropriate flag from his own flag-pole on an appropriate occasion is absolutely fine and bears no similarity whatsoever to what the "Weoley Warriors" have deliberately and cynically started. It is disingenuous for anyone to think so.

"This is our country. If you don't like it, leave." And there it is; the blatantly racist motivation they're trying to claim doesn't exist. 🙄

No, pretty sure was referring to anyone who doesn't like it should leave.

And that's a fair comment no?

Why does an English flag in England offend you? I live in Cornwall and there’s plenty of Cornish and English flags around. I’m currently waiting for DH to put up our flagpole (purchased in April for his birthday).

Why are you pretending not to understand OP’s point of view?

fastingforweightloss · 19/09/2025 12:30

NoSoapJustUseShowerGel · 19/09/2025 12:15

“Op's daughters won't be getting followed home from school.” You know schoolgirls have been followed home (and in some cases murdered) by British-born white men, right? This may come as a surprise to you but many criminals were born here.

So, because white men can also be predators, we should let in thousands of undocumented males, from Countries where rape isn't a crime?

What an utterly bizarre thought process. What are you thinking? Are you even thinking at all?

Op lives in a wee village. I reckon she might feel differently if she lived next to the Bell Hotel. All well and good to be "pro immigrants" when you live a million miles away, isn't it? Op's daughters won't be getting followed home from school. I find it odd she's not angry on others behalf though? NIMBY? I'm so angry for the poor people in Epping and similar places - they are my countrymen, and we stand together.

I grew up in a city with a huge immigrant population - some areas had no English people at all. Let me tell you, these people had no desire to integrate. They wouldn't even allow their adult children to date "white trash". And they didn't even try to hide their general disgust at English people - my Mum worked with immigrants and they openly talked about how they wouldn't allow white trash into their home. My mum never complained to HR (she should have). Our city also stopped putting up the "Merry Christmas" banners and replaced them with "Happy Holidays". FUCK OFF. Can you imagine getting away with that in any other country?

People have had enough. And quite rightly so.

I couldn't look myself in the mirror if I disrespected the flag of MY own country - what an utter disgrace.

Your poor DH.

I live up the road from another refugee hotel (not the Bell) and it’s been a non issue to be honest. Some people complained about the hotel residents “loitering” outside but honestly they have no money so they are just coming for a walk and a bit of fresh air, they can hardly go out for a meal or take the family for a day out. In my experience the refugees included families as their children attended local schools.
I’ve seen stories locally about a man following young girls home from school and exposing himself to them, but that person happens to be white.
Not all members of each group are the same.
And don’t most Americans say Happy Holidays because for them the season where they get time off work starts with the double bank holiday on Thanksgiving, whereas they only get Christmas Day off, not Boxing Day? Having lived in a few different countries myself, including the US, you can wish people Happy whatever it is you like, whether you celebrate it or they do, and most people take it as a nice thing.

fastingforweightloss · 19/09/2025 11:23

Fancy being ASHAMED of your own Flag, because some foreigners might be offended. Fancy actually screwing up your countries flag and putting it in a bin? I just can't fathom how anyone could be so disgusting.

You want my honest opinion? I think you're a traitor and a coward.

RTFT 🙄

Yes, we can, go on them, tell me your views on those incidents I mentioned?

And here is the article about the black boy who was forced to kiss a white bully’s shoe and then repeatedly punched afterwards.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx2094kv9l8o

I don't need to say any more than those incidents are abhorrent, which they are, and should rightly be reported to police and brought to light in the media... Just as the non-white grooming gangs in places like Rotherham should be also.

But there seems to be a real reluctance to speak about this and I can't for the life of me understand why...

@fastingforweightlossI live in London. My kids are at school and are friends with children whose parents come from all over the world. Some of them are refugees, some are economic migrants. They are tolerant and kind to one another and understand and respect each other’s differences. My community is greatly enriched by diversity.

I’m proud that I’m teaching them to judge people on their character and not on their skin colour or where their families originated from.
Multiculturalism is a beautiful thing.

Stop hiding behind hate. Stop using our country’s flag to promote your hate. it’s SHAMEFUL!

What's comical is the only speakers Yaxley Lennon could entice were -

Katie "I wouldn't let my kids go in a play date with anyone called Chardonnay or Tyler" Hopkins

Ant "tax evader extraordinaire and sacked from Channel 4" Middleton

I mean, way to get a message across. 😂

You couldn't make it up.
