I took down some flags and DH wasn’t happy

LittleChopper · 18/09/2025 23:13

On my commute today, I noticed someone had hung three large St George flags on a bridge coming out of our village. They have been popping up everywhere but this particular instance I thought “I’m not having that”. On the way home I pulled over and took them down.

when I got home and DH asked why I was binning three large flags I told him and he.. had some interesting opinions. He told me I shouldn’t be pissing off people in the village, that they have every right to hang an England flag in England, and that I’m being too political.

For a start, I would argue that I’ve always been quite strongly opinionated so he shouldn’t be surprised I did it.

Just as others have the right to their opinion I have mine. We have people in the village who are migrants… why should they have to look at that. It’s clear why they were hanging there given what’s going on at the moment and I’ve never see a flag hanging in the village in the decade we’ve been here so why else would they be there now.

I’m just so disappointed with it all. With the UK, with DH.

Next time maybe I’ll add to the collection instead. 🇬🇷🇮🇪🇮🇳🇦🇫🇧🇸🇵🇰🇪🇸🇸🇩🇿🇦🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

@fastingforweightlossI live in London. My kids are at school and are friends with children whose parents come from all over the world. Some of them are refugees, some are economic migrants. They are tolerant and kind to one another and understand and respect each other’s differences. My community is greatly enriched by diversity.

I’m proud that I’m teaching them to judge people on their character and not on their skin colour or where their families originated from.
Multiculturalism is a beautiful thing.

Stop hiding behind hate. Stop using our country’s flag to promote your hate. it’s SHAMEFUL!

You can be all of those things and STILL oppose circa 1000 undocumented men coming in to your Country every day, you know? 🙄

Thinkingaboutmoving · 19/09/2025 12:44

I have no time for the flag waving racists but I absolutely defend everyone's right to freedom of expression and peaceful protest.

Shutting down debate and protest is the surest way to give Reform a home run at the next elections.

I'm with the DH on this...

What’s scaring you so much? The femicide statistics are out, you’re more likely to be killed by your very own brother/son than you are by the random brown person you may be imagining.

What's comical is the only speakers Yaxley Lennon could entice were -

Katie "I wouldn't let my kids go in a play date with anyone called Chardonnay or Tyler" Hopkins

Ant "tax evader extraordinaire and sacked from Channel 4" Middleton

I mean, way to get a message across. 😂

You couldn't make it up.

Pathetic.

Yours was the best post on this thread, imo.

I have no idea why it was deleted, you said nothing wrong. We are being erased, aren't we?

Indeed. Pretty sure my comment pointing out that flying your own flag in your own country is never controversial unless you are under enemy occupation was also deleted.

It seems the anti white racists and Orwellian thought police are out in force.

Correct. Colour is irrelevant, culture is irrelevant, every single person entering the country should be vetted, full stop.

No, pretty sure was referring to anyone who doesn't like it should leave.

And that's a fair comment no?

So who does the "our" in "This is our country" refer to?

Thank you , I didn't make personal attacks and I do think that it was unfairly deleted.
I don't have a need to go running to report other people's posts because I don't feel threatened or triggered by them, as I stand confidently for what I believe in .

Those who are British, either naturalised or otherwise, and are happy to assimilate and get along with their neighbours and follow the laws of the land without screaming abuse at people for flying their own flag in their own country - for example.

But there are lots of British people, "naturalised and otherwise" who are also "happy to assimilate and get along with their neighbours and follow the laws of the land" but draw the line at the English flag being appropriated by racists as a symbol of hate.

And whether you like it or not, it's our country too.

No, you're making up numbers because you don't like the real ones. So it's little wonder you aren't taken seriously.
Start with arguments based upon fact and then you might have a proper seat at the table.

No it hasn't been - this is the third time I've read it (it's getting rather repetitive now).

This racist nonsense has spread to my country in the last few weeks. I hate seeing my national flag being used to signal bigotry.

It’s even more stupid and offensive because everyone who is flying it, is descended from immigrants of the last 250 years tops.

So you've had sight of everyone's "pedigrees" have you?

Oh good, I saw someone had had a little cry and one of my posts had gone but couldn't be bothered checking through them all to see which one it was.

Yes, you do sound a bit paranoid and racist. Well done on realising that, that's the first step to fixing yourself :)

If you weren't flying a flat 6 months ago and just happen to have put one up recently, it isn't out of patriotism.

You dont know that. By implication you're basically saying it should never be flown again.

What flag would be acceptable to you? Spanish, Nigerian, LGB, LBTQI+?

Nicely admitting you are a thief here! Someone put up their property on public display temporarily for all to enjoy looking at and you stole it and destroyed it, let’s hope the people who live in ‘your’ village (I presume you own the majority of housing stock then??) find out you stole them

Mr Jones said his remarks were directed towards far-right activists who he said had left stickers on a train with razor blades hidden behind them

Slightly different from shouting abuse and inciting violence towards anyone with brown skin.

A pity he didn't make it clear before he said it.

And did he report these "hidden razor-blades" to the police and what was the outcome?

Livelovebehappy · 19/09/2025 13:14

BluntPlumHam · 19/09/2025 09:36

Generally speaking areas with flags flying tend to be places where you would avoid buying. St George’s flag has been appropriated by various racist groups and no amount of feigning is about to change that reputation.

That's just too bad I'm afraid. Just because you're making assumptions, people shouldn't be instructed to not fly our national flag. People seem to think its okay for Palestinian flags to be flown which signify support for a terrorist group, and trigger Jewish people, but apparently not ok for people here to fly our own national flag....

You're right. There is nothing inherently racist in flying the flag of your country.

However, participating in a racist campaign that promotes the use of flags as an expression of hate? That is certainly racist and would have been considered unacceptable in British culture until very recently.

There is a reason why English flags have spontaneously started to appear in cities, towns and villages across the country when nobody ever felt the need to express their culture in this way previously. That reason is the racist campaign led by Tommy Robinson and his extremist mates.
