I took down some flags and DH wasn’t happy

LittleChopper · 18/09/2025 23:13

On my commute today, I noticed someone had hung three large St George flags on a bridge coming out of our village. They have been popping up everywhere but this particular instance I thought “I’m not having that”. On the way home I pulled over and took them down.

when I got home and DH asked why I was binning three large flags I told him and he.. had some interesting opinions. He told me I shouldn’t be pissing off people in the village, that they have every right to hang an England flag in England, and that I’m being too political.

For a start, I would argue that I’ve always been quite strongly opinionated so he shouldn’t be surprised I did it.

Just as others have the right to their opinion I have mine. We have people in the village who are migrants… why should they have to look at that. It’s clear why they were hanging there given what’s going on at the moment and I’ve never see a flag hanging in the village in the decade we’ve been here so why else would they be there now.

I’m just so disappointed with it all. With the UK, with DH.

Next time maybe I’ll add to the collection instead. 🇬🇷🇮🇪🇮🇳🇦🇫🇧🇸🇵🇰🇪🇸🇸🇩🇿🇦🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

This is very tiring.

I'm in London. I saw the 'Unite the Kingdom' lot the other day, waving their flags. Among the flags, I am sorry to say, I saw a sign saying, "Khan is a terrorist."

How dare they? You don't have to agree with his policies, but calling someone a terrorist based on nothing but their ethnicity, is beyond disgusting. I couldn't believe it.

Whatever that crowd want to believe, the fact is, Khan was elected as mayor of London. What have they done with their lives? They need to take a look in the mirror. A very long, hard look.

I suppose my husband is probsbly a terrorist too is he? The fact is, he may be an immigrant - his family were refugees even - but he and his companies probably pay more tax than that lot on the march put together.

They say they are "the people." But they are not. They are a particular type of people. 100,000 of them marched apparently. So what? There are more people at a Taylor Swift concert.

How dare they?

Perhaps because this is a free country, and people are allowed to have opinions which differ from your own, and to vocalise them.

No way you can look the footage and honestly believe that’s 100,000 people. It’s more.

But it's ok to call everyone on the march a racist would you say? That's being judgemental too, and you've no idea what taxes people pay. Again, you're being judgemental.
And if you could manage to get all those people into a Taylor Swift concert you must be a magician.

Do you not think that most probably people wanted to fly the Union flag before, but felt too nervous to incase it 'offended' others?

Where on earth do you live that the flag could not be displayed?

I've said it a few times on this thread now: the flag is not and was not an unfamiliar sight. It flies from my town hall. Nobody, but nobody, I have ever known has had a problem with it.

Maybe where you live things are different.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 19/09/2025 10:09

I am honestly sick to the back teeth of people thinking they know the hearts and minds of an entire group of people when they are not one homogenous mass. It’s fuelling the division

Like the racists they probably lack the insight to work that one out, @WhereIsMyJumper. Nobody with sense would suggest that every immigrant shares a similar mindset, but to some it's okay to insist that every flag flyer does

Yep, pure hypocrisy

That isn't what I said at all.

i take it you're a hard working, highly educated brown person who owns a nice house blah blah..........though.

If you are benefiting our country by being here ie you are a GP or something, then you are most welcome and please tell me how I can get a doctors appointment.

If you have come over illegally, have no skills that benefit us and plan to milk us for all the benefits you can get, then yes I don't want you here. Shock horror.

It’s what you meant though isn’t it?

Are benefits for white people only?

You’re not legally qualified to decide who is illegal and who isn’t.

If you want a gp appointment then stop supporting/ voting for governments that intend to sell the nhs off or run it further into the ground.

2 years ago while house hunting I viewed a house flying the UK flag. No problem. No ill intent.

Today, I wouldn't bother viewing.

The intent has changed. If you don't understand that you're being wilfully ignorant.

I perhaps didn't explain myself well - I agree with you. My point in responding to the quoted poster is that it's simply disingenuous to say the current flag activity is a reaction to not being allowed to display them. Context is key.

ClafoutisSurprise · 19/09/2025 11:59

Lemonandorangecheescake · 19/09/2025 11:53

Well, apparently it's not so different since we have also acquired hundreds of new flags in the last few days.

Why is that necessary when - as I mention - it was clearly perfectly fine to fly the Union flag previously?

What point is being made here? Why do we now need so many of them?

Good example of leftist toxicity, yet more boring name-calling and no ability to find common ground with anyone. No wonder current politics are such a disaster.

The sheer fucking irony.

The point is a message to the Government that the people of this Country will unite to show the Government that they won't be silenced any longer. People have lobbied their MP's tirelessly, to no avail.

Because no one has listened, people have resorted to protesting (peacefully) and the flags represent unity (not racism).
I'm sure next year's march will be twice as big, if not bigger. Good.

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 19/09/2025 12:07

Why is it that the only socially acceptable time to put the flag up is during kicky ball? It's always so felt strange to me.

fastingforweightloss · 19/09/2025 12:07

Op lives in a wee village. I reckon she might feel differently if she lived next to the Bell Hotel. All well and good to be "pro immigrants" when you live a million miles away, isn't it? Op's daughters won't be getting followed home from school. I find it odd she's not angry on others behalf though? NIMBY? I'm so angry for the poor people in Epping and similar places - they are my countrymen, and we stand together.

I grew up in a city with a huge immigrant population - some areas had no English people at all. Let me tell you, these people had no desire to integrate. They wouldn't even allow their adult children to date "white trash". And they didn't even try to hide their general disgust at English people - my Mum worked with immigrants and they openly talked about how they wouldn't allow white trash into their home. My mum never complained to HR (she should have). Our city also stopped putting up the "Merry Christmas" banners and replaced them with "Happy Holidays". FUCK OFF. Can you imagine getting away with that in any other country?

People have had enough. And quite rightly so.

I couldn't look myself in the mirror if I disrespected the flag of MY own country - what an utter disgrace.

Your poor DH.

You mean, you agree with me? Or are all the black and Asian and Jewish people flying the union flag all racist scum in your opinion?

Really, I think if you hate England so much that the mere sight of its flag causes you to feel offended or fearful, then go and live somewhere else. Most people who come here do so because they value what England and Britain has to offer. If you don't, that's fine, but don't try and spoil it for everyone else.

Another disingenuous post. We are not offended by "the mere sight" of our national flag. We're deeply offended by it being misappropriated and defiled by successive far-right groups (BNP, EDL, Reform UK) and Tommy Ten Names - they've spoiled it for us. And now the self-styled "Weoley Warriors" - founded by three men a couple of months ago who are using it for exactly the same purpose (to send an intimidating, racist message to immigrants) but who refuse to be interviewed by the media. Why, if their motivation for and involvement in "Operation Raise the Colours" is so wholesome? (Some people who know them know why, and say about them "They know what they're doing" and "They should know better".) If you want to be aligned with such people, that's your choice. Decent people don't want to be - we just want to reclaim our flag from these far-right thugs so we can fly it for appropriate occasions, in appropriate locations, with pride.

The only flags in my part of London are along the Kings Rd in Chelsea. They were put up as part of the Chelsea Flower Show, when all the shops had flower displays etc. They are put up properly by the council. Nobody has an issue with this. Obviously.

This type of flag use is a world away from this sudden putting up of flags or painting roundabouts at the incitement of Yaxley Lennon.

When my son went into Essex last week, there were grown men, in their 50s - I'm sure you can picture the type - sitting on deckchairs under their pathetic little flags on a high street - to guard them. I mean, how sad can you get?

It's the first time my 22 year-old son, who looks vaguely Middle Eastern - has experienced a racist vibe in his life. He saw a Deliveroo guy go past on a bike, who was black, and the men were chortling to themselves, between swigging their beer, and heard to say "He can fuck off too."

These people, and people on here who try to excuse them, are the scourge of society.

They - and you - will be the scourge of society whether there are immigrants here or not. You may be in denial, or unable to see yourselves, but everyone else sees you for who you are. And it's very ugly,

Yep, the highest estimate by the people who loathe anyone who flies their own flag in their own country, calls anyone who disagrees with them slurs and is desperate to shut down any and all peaceful protest was 150,000 - there were a LOT more than that.

And, as I said earlier, the only reason why flying the flag of your own country in your own country could ever be considered controversial is if you are under enemy occupation.

“Op's daughters won't be getting followed home from school.” You know schoolgirls have been followed home (and in some cases murdered) by British-born white men, right? This may come as a surprise to you but many criminals were born here.
