I took down some flags and DH wasn’t happy

On my commute today, I noticed someone had hung three large St George flags on a bridge coming out of our village. They have been popping up everywhere but this particular instance I thought “I’m not having that”. On the way home I pulled over and took them down.

when I got home and DH asked why I was binning three large flags I told him and he.. had some interesting opinions. He told me I shouldn’t be pissing off people in the village, that they have every right to hang an England flag in England, and that I’m being too political.

For a start, I would argue that I’ve always been quite strongly opinionated so he shouldn’t be surprised I did it.

Just as others have the right to their opinion I have mine. We have people in the village who are migrants… why should they have to look at that. It’s clear why they were hanging there given what’s going on at the moment and I’ve never see a flag hanging in the village in the decade we’ve been here so why else would they be there now.

I’m just so disappointed with it all. With the UK, with DH.

Next time maybe I’ll add to the collection instead. 🇬🇷🇮🇪🇮🇳🇦🇫🇧🇸🇵🇰🇪🇸🇸🇩🇿🇦🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

We all know why there is such a plethora of St.George / England flags at the moment . It has nothing to do with a sudden wave of patriotism affecting the British population . They are being used as an anti- immigration sign and I say hats off to the OP for fighting for common sense and not just accepting everybody elses " pull the drawbridge up" mentality. I am white, retired male and I despise the jingoism that my fellow Brits espouse. Patriotism ...the last refuge of the scoundrel !!

'We all know', such inaccurate arrogance, love how only certain opinions are allowed and the righteous always know better!

ForTipsyFinch · 19/09/2025 11:20

I would be taking them down too.

And to the ‘why can’t we fly our flag crowd’ - nice try but we know it isn’t about that. And tbh this is country which is built on immigration and globalisation. It’s pretty shitty of you to take that flag and use it as a symbol of intolerance and exclusion 🖕

MyHeartyCoralSnail · 19/09/2025 11:21

It’s an England flag in England. Get over it. Have you been pulling down Hamas supporting flags or are you happy to offend Jews/support terrorists.

LilyCanna · 19/09/2025 11:21

We can all tell the difference between a cat pissing in a litter tray or an out of the way corner of the garden and a tom cat spraying everywhere to mark his territory and send a hostile message to other cats. In the same way, we all know why England flags are being painted on roundabouts etc. right now.

fastingforweightloss · 19/09/2025 11:23

Fancy being ASHAMED of your own Flag, because some foreigners might be offended. Fancy actually screwing up your countries flag and putting it in a bin? I just can't fathom how anyone could be so disgusting.

You want my honest opinion? I think you're a traitor and a coward.

Spiderx · 19/09/2025 11:25

Well ok ...explain the sudden surge of flag waving then ?

solongfarewells · 19/09/2025 00:49

Bravo! 👏

And to the wide eyed “what’s wrong with English flags in England?” brigade: If you flew an english flag 5 years ago, fine.
Anyone doing it for the first time now is doing it to send a “go home” message.
You can deny it on mumsnet all you like, I will still judge you, and so will many others in real life.

5 years ago, people said flying the England flag was racist.

10 years ago, people said flying the England flag was racist.

Is it ever going to be ok to fly our own flag in this damn country? Will regular non racist people ever be able to put one up without fear of being called racist? How do we reclaim it from the racist people if non racist people are too scared to fly it in case people think they’re racist?

Whatsallthisthen2025 · 19/09/2025 11:27

Oh, and by the way, literally the only time that flying the flag of your own country in your own country is considered to be controversial is if you're under enemy occupation.

Hth :)

nosleepforme · 19/09/2025 11:32

They came to live here, but they shouldn’t be subjected to looking at the flag?! Why is it bad to see the flag? If you go to Australia and see the Australian flag, or you go to America and see the American flag are you saying you shouldn’t be subjected to that? Like it’s abusive?!

smallpinecone · 19/09/2025 11:33

WalkDontWalk · 19/09/2025 10:49

Then you’d be mistaken.

As an immigrant, I didn’t expect the people of that country to alter their values or national symbols to suit me. I wasn’t a citizen of that country, it wasn’t my heritage on display. My feelings about it were totally irrelevant. And if I hadn’t liked it - I could have left.

You mean, you agree with me? Or are all the black and Asian and Jewish people flying the union flag all racist scum in your opinion?

Really, I think if you hate England so much that the mere sight of its flag causes you to feel offended or fearful, then go and live somewhere else. Most people who come here do so because they value what England and Britain has to offer. If you don't, that's fine, but don't try and spoil it for everyone else.

The language that you’re using….
Are you okay?
And I’m willing to bet you know no black, Asian or Jewish people flying the St George’s flag.

People are so tired of this lie being repeated.

Immigration did not build this country. British people built Britain.

People resent being lied to about their history and about themselves. You might think it’s a noble lie, but it’s a lie nonetheless.

Spiderx · 19/09/2025 11:36

Sooo ...are all these flags being shown as a 'welcoming sign' to all immigrants then ? Hmmm, must have missed that bit in Tommy Robinsons speech ...

That’s their problem, not ours. If they don’t like the English flag, they’re free to go elsewhere. No one is holding them hostage.

How disgraceful. Would you tell someone with dyslexia that?

No I wouldn't. And you don't have dyslexia.

sunandfizz · 19/09/2025 11:41

This is very tiring.

I'm in London. I saw the 'Unite the Kingdom' lot the other day, waving their flags. Among the flags, I am sorry to say, I saw a sign saying, "Khan is a terrorist."

How dare they? You don't have to agree with his policies, but calling someone a terrorist based on nothing but their ethnicity, is beyond disgusting. I couldn't believe it.

Whatever that crowd want to believe, the fact is, Khan was elected as mayor of London. What have they done with their lives? They need to take a look in the mirror. A very long, hard look.

I suppose my husband is probsbly a terrorist too is he? The fact is, he may be an immigrant - his family were refugees even - but he and his companies probably pay more tax than that lot on the march put together.

They say they are "the people." But they are not. They are a particular type of people. 100,000 of them marched apparently. So what? There are more people at a Taylor Swift concert.

It’s because the English flag is being flown by right wing idiots - if the flags were being flown for other reasons then fair enough.

what do you tell your kids? The flags are flown by patriots kids the ones that shout get your tits out to women while they’re marching

Never seen a Hamas flag flying in my city. Ever.

And yet the uneducated and unwashed are flying plenty of St George's flags, not realising SG was born in Turkey.

ClafoutisSurprise · 19/09/2025 11:46

Do you not think that most probably people wanted to fly the Union flag before, but felt too nervous to incase it 'offended' others?

Where on earth do you live that the flag could not be displayed?

I've said it a few times on this thread now: the flag is not and was not an unfamiliar sight. It flies from my town hall. Nobody, but nobody, I have ever known has had a problem with it.

MasterBeth · 19/09/2025 11:46

LunaShadow · 18/09/2025 23:16

Why does an English flag in England offend you? I live in Cornwall and there’s plenty of Cornish and English flags around. I’m currently waiting for DH to put up our flagpole (purchased in April for his birthday).

It's not "offensive", but it is provocative.

We are not a nation that traditionally flies flags on private property as a matter of course except for special occasions of national significance like royal weddings or jubilees or to show our support in sporting tournaments. We have always quietly embraced our patriotism, and taken the mick out of the likes of the vulgar Americans and French who insisted on parading their national identity in our faces.

So flying a flag right now, in a climate where a fascist rabble-rouser like Tommy Robinson is calling for it is intentionally antagonistic and political. It's not what we do.

Straight out of the fascist playbook.

Good example of leftist toxicity, yet more boring name-calling and no ability to find common ground with anyone. No wonder current politics are such a disaster.

2 years ago while house hunting I viewed a house flying the UK flag. No problem. No ill intent.

Today, I wouldn't bother viewing.

The intent has changed. If you don't understand that you're being wilfully ignorant.
