Always been fascinated by tea and kind of like the good quality ones but has never been a habit for me. I have recently decided to stop drinking coffee for various reasons and incorporate more tea onto my life. I like black tea and green tea, not a big fan of the fruity infusions. What are the best brands? Do you usually drink it loose or in a bag? Teapot or straight into the mug? Milk? How many cups a day do you drink?
Curious and fascinated by the tea topic that’s all :)

Not British, but an Anglo background.

Drank coffee growing up. Now if I have normal tea (super rare) I have it weak either black with lemon or weak, a tiny bit of milk and sugar. But i drink herbal teas daily- after dinner usually. Most often peppermint tea. I think the pukka brand is the best for herbal teas.

Alongthetowpath · 19/09/2025 07:40

I have tea about 4 times a day. I hardly ever drink coffee.

If I’m at home and there are more than me having it, we’ll make up a big pot with tea leaves and a tea cosy, and have a couple of cups at a sitting.
If it’s just me, I just use a teabag - sometimes I do put the teabag in my pot for one, sometimes straight in the mug.

I drink it black, no sugar, but sometimes with a slice of lemon.

I think it tastes better poured from the pot, but that’s probably just imagination. It still adds to the enjoyment though!

I use a small white bone china mug for tea.

For loose leaf, I like assam tea best, but I’ll try other types of black tea every now and then.

For teabags, I like Ringtons Gold, but they are hard to come by. So I usually compromise on Yorkshire Gold.
At work we have standard Yorkshire teabags.

FOJN · 19/09/2025 08:08

Tea addict here. I've tried all sorts over the years and have all the paraphernalia but I always return to Yorkshire tea. Brewed in a cup with freshly boiled water, bag out, milk in, no sugar. I drink 9 - 10 cups a day.

I have just spent too much money on Bird & Blend tea, and a gravity brewer. I also have 2 small infuser tea pots ( one at work) and a pile of fillable tea bags. Black, green, white, oolong, Yerba maté, chai, with all the the lovely flavours. My current favourite is a coconut milk oolong. And I have the advent calendar waiting for December.

I came on to say this exact thing. Popped into Bird and Blend for a teapot and came out having spent £40 on a brewdini and a selection of loose leaf tea. That shop.is now one of my happy places, I spend far too much in there. I have almost stopped drinking coffee now as I'm enjoying loose leaf tea so much.

Titasaducksarse · 19/09/2025 08:25

I'm a prolific tea drinker and don't understand why coffee shops took over the world when there is such a massive variety of tea out there!
I just have a bog standard bag tea day to day, a blended breakfast tea. Strong and well brewed.

I then do have loose tea and try to pick up nice blends from fancy tea shops as a treat.

I like herbal tea too and have peppermint, a lovely pukka camomile blend in the evenings or an uplifting tea as needed.

Crunchienuts · 19/09/2025 08:33

2 cups a day. One when get up, and an afternoon tea around 4. Usually breakfast tea in the morning and earl gray in the afternoon. I might have a green tea or a ginger tea after lunch but not every day. I like tea 😊

Ilovepastafortea · 19/09/2025 08:59

As I type this I'm on my 3rd mug of Yorkshire tea & have just put the kettle on to make another pot. My family know not to expect any sense from me before I've had 3 mugs of tea in the morning. DH is an early riser & brings me my first cup at about 06:30.

Yes, I'm addicted, but there are worse things to be addicted to I'm sure.

At work I have a tray with a pot of tea, milk in a jug & drink tea all day. Funnily enough I don't seem to wee more often than other people.

Giggorata · 19/09/2025 09:18

I drink my way through a pot of tea every morning, Yorkshire or Twinings English Breakfast leaf tea, with an added hint of Earl Grey, which gives it some zing. It is known as the London mix.

My DILs send me some Fortnums or Marriage Freres tea now and again.

I'm not really supposed to drink much tea because of the caffeine (I gave up coffee) but will have more in the afternoon, if I need that ahhhhhh feeling, otherwise I love a chai latte or peppermint tea. Not a big fan of fruit teas, I prefer herbals.

PearlCluches · 19/09/2025 09:20

No fancy teas here. Just Yorkshire Tea in a mug. Can't function without it to wake me up although oddly I never drink tea in summer.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 19/09/2025 09:21

M&S Gold bags. Large one every morning in bed, then another as soon as I get up, then several more until the last one right before bed. No sugar, dash of milk.

I have a couple of coffees each day as well, Nespresso pod things.

Sourisblanche · 19/09/2025 09:24

I drink about 5 cups of tea a day. Decaf from lunch onwards. Mostly Clipper Organic or Waitrose own decaf.

Sometimes I have loose leaf tea as an afternoon treat. Especially if I’ve baked something.

I always travel with a flask of tea. And my own tea bags for a hotel room.

My dh is foreign and never used to drink tea, only strong Dutch coffee, but now I’ve got him into tea drinking tooBrew

CinnamonBuns67 · 19/09/2025 09:25

Yorkshire Tea, Milk, 2 sugars. I'm having a cup right now and drink about 3 or 4 cups a day.

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 19/09/2025 09:26

I like Williamson ‘Earl grey and English Breakfast. Tea bags

SunnyDolly · 19/09/2025 09:28

I hate ‘normal’ tea and have never drunk it.

I drink green tea and peppermint tea, as good quality as I can afford! Occasionally treat myself to loose leaf but usually have Clipper or Tea Pigs. Always leave the bag in, and use a massive mug. I have about 4 a day (2 of each).

I have cut back to one cup of coffee per day so drinking more tea. I’m Irish so we are raised on tea from infancy! Always a metal teapot. Boil kettle and fill teapot to warm it. Boil kettle again. Drain teapot and add tea or teabags. We like Barry’s! Pour in boiling water just as kettle clicks off. Pour slowly and from a height. Put tea on hob and let it come back to the boil. Turn off hi. And let it steep for a few minutes. Yea is ready. Add milk to big hefty mugs and pour I. Tea - again from a height and enjoy! Pot tea is always the best!

I’m Irish but don’t do all that palaver 😀
Boil kettle. When water has boiled put a bit into the tea pot- swirl it around to heat the teapot, empty it out. Add 3 teabags of Thompson’s Punjana tea ( I’ll be lynched that it’s not Barrys or Lyons tea 😂 must be my Northern Irish roots).
Let the tea “draw” (no idea - it’s what I heard growing up ) for a good few minutes.
Pour into a mug and add a splash of milk.
Add sugar if you must
Enjoy

Daleksatemyshed · 19/09/2025 09:42

Yorkshire tea is the best, Yorkshire Gold is more expensive but lovely. I found a lovely china teapot in a charity shop for a fiver and drink the lot every morning. Finding a tea cosy to keep the pot warm was the real challenge

Where I come from, we leave the tea to mash in the teapot!

RedPony1 · 19/09/2025 10:07

See, i dont class the fruit or green teas as tea!! They are just nasty hot drinks.

Thelnebriati · 19/09/2025 10:11

Lidl gold blend is very similar to PG Tips, there isn't a huge difference in price per cup but the boxes are smaller so it doesn't feel as spendy.
I've gone off Yorkshire tea, it might be my taste buds but its got a toffee note I can't get on with.

BengalBangle · 19/09/2025 10:14

3 or 4 teabags in a mug. Leave for 5-ish mins. Dash of milk. Swig whilst still hot.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 19/09/2025 10:18

Yorkshire gold made with two sugars and a drop if milk so its a nice darkish golden colour

Left · 19/09/2025 10:20

I drink 4-6 cups of clipper tea a day (either the green box or the orange box - whichever is on offer). Always in a large fine china mug, brew for around five mins so very strong, and then add the milk at the end. Needs to have a proper mash/steep.

For a treat I sometimes get a small box of Teapigs, or a small pack from Bird and Blend.

Aspiringcook · 19/09/2025 10:27

Thank you, loving reading these. I personally cannot drink tea with milk and sugar, like good quality loose tea (not too strong) on its own to really taste the real flavour.
Join me in the other post if you’d like to share more details about your fav mug(s)!

We are a big tea drinking house, including DC. We drink Yorkshire tea… we buy it by the sack from the farmers co-op. I think there are 1200 tea bags in each sack and we get through a lot of them! i have a range of bone china pint mugs especially for tea drinking. I would think I get through about 8 pints of tea a day when I’m at home; probably just 3 if I’m working or out and about. I drink it black so if I have a hot drink out and about I drink coffee cos it irks me paying £4+ for a black tea, particularly if it’s in a paper cup! Proper Yorkshire 🤦‍♀️ I grew up in a very cold farmhouse and dad used to pour tea on our cereals to warm us up in the mornings so I was started young and it’s been a life long addiction.
