So around 2 weeks ago I developed a few blisters on my hands and feet. Been burning the candle at both ends so just assumed I'd been working too hard.

Which then progressively got worse to the point I couldn't walk and if you touched a feather to my toe i would of cried. I've been crawling to the toilet and pissing myself in the process. FUN TIMES!

After 6 doctors and a multitude of nurses they still have no idea. I've had more blood taken than dracula would want and if you shook me right now I'd sound like a pill bottle. All tests/swabs coming back clear.

Basically been told it could be...
Allergic reaction
Bacterial
Viral
Autoimmune disease
Herpes
Syphillis
Eczema

You get the drift. Any ideas mumsnet? Im convinced it's chemical burns from changing my fish tanks that i stupidly done in my socks. I apologise if I put anyone off their dinner TIA x

What chemicals came into contact with your hands and feet? I imagine if they were diluted in the fish water and you got fish water on your hands and feet then it shouldn’t cause chemical burns, otherwise the fish would be floating long before now!

BadgernTheGarden · 18/09/2025 13:45

It looks as though the affected skin is peeling off and it looks OK underneath. It must have been pretty strong stuff you walked in, undiluted bleach or an acidic cleaner. It does look as though it's getting better, touch wood.

Dreamerinme · 18/09/2025 13:48

Can you afford to see a dermatologist privately?

BMW6 · 18/09/2025 13:49

One of my sisters had something very similar years ago. I've sent the pics over to her and asked does it look the same and what was it as I've forgotten..... I remember her palms and soles of feet were peeling in sheets and she had purple blotches.

I'll tell you what she says

MousseMousse · 18/09/2025 13:53

Oh my god, you poor thing that looks horrendous!

Did you actually spill anything from the fish tanks on your feet? Or step in?

JacquesHarlow · 18/09/2025 13:59

Pay for a dermatologist @Thebibleofdave !!!

didgeridid · 18/09/2025 14:01

Fucking hell
I can't imagine anything in a fish tank would cause that??!
You didn't try one of those foot peel things did you?

Thebibleofdave · 18/09/2025 14:27

Thank you all so very much for your replies!

To answer some questions I can't say for certain what chemicals I think came into contact as looking at the bottle there are none there. If there is its in Chinese. It's a 'tap safe' chemical.

I done the tanks in a rush so was stood in water in my socks as was making a mess so socks were saturated and dipping my hands in the water to clean tanks. Other than that I was dipping my feet in the sea and splashing with my hands on a beach I've realised they said pollution is rife.

If it was just on my hands I'd say reaction off cleaning products but I don't clean in work with my feet!

I'd love to go private but could just about afford bus fair to my local hospital unfortunately:-( especially as I've missed work im MASSIVELY down with money atm.

It's localised and appears not to be contagious. Pp said skin seems healthy underneath and nurse said the same.

It was like an episode of HOUSE up hospital the other day mixed with David Attenborough commentary about my weird fish.

I've dared Google and Steven Johnson disease came up but hospital said no. Also not hand foot and mouth. Its a medical mystery

It's mad! Reading your reply, maybe you got stung by something in the sea? Maybe look up jelly fish stings

I'm running out of suggestions 😂

I also want to try footner but I'm scared 😂

Thebibleofdave · 18/09/2025 14:36

@MousseMousse The newly built surf school was closed this year unbeknownst to me due to 'pollution'. I have no social media to check my local area but on another thread a poster was concerned as her local beach said the same but due to e-coli/stomach troubles. I would of thought if there was a host of similar cases they be on to it by now but what do I know!

@didgeridid I have considered somthing like this as im at a loss. And so seems the medical professionals! Its process of elimination now.

We had bioluminescent plankton on a local beach a few weeks back so dipped my feet in and gave it a splash. Other than that and the fish tanks i can't think of anything both my hands and feet have been in?

No change in washing powder/toiletries.
No change in diet. Or anything else.

Also footner is fab for dry skin on your feet...not very appealing as its peeling off but my goodness...they were fab after!

Have you tried Google translate on the Chinese chemical list on the bottle? Does it say to use gloves?

Maybe you could contact the supplier and ask?

BoarBrush · 18/09/2025 14:54

Agree use Google lens and the translate option to see what was in this stuff. Please don't use unknown chemicals ya daft bugger!

Thebibleofdave · 18/09/2025 15:01

Picture incoming of chemical used in fish tanks. Think the symbol just means it's recyclable?

Have you put the photo on Google, there's a box to the right of the Google search bar, I did it quickly, lots of similar photos to yours, Tinea Pedis came up..

Poirot1983 · 18/09/2025 15:06

Oh my goodness you must be in agony. I would say that really does look like chemical burns.

I have allergies and chronic eczema and have never had or seen anything like that in all the eczema groups I am in.

Hope it heals soon.

That’s Athletes Foot.

The pictures don’t look like Athletes foot!

Thebibleofdave · 18/09/2025 15:18

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow I also have it on my hands so not sure. I thought it might be trench foot but no? The closest logical explanation i think is chemical/ammonia burns😕

This is how it first looked and then at its worst...

Could it be Bullous pemphigoid? My friends sister had this starting on hands and feet and needed steroids'. It's an automimmune condition. I would have expected a GP to have considered this though.

Thebibleofdave · 18/09/2025 15:33

@Harriet9955 thank you I will look into this! May I ask how old your sister is please? Google says typically over 60 years old Thank you x

It was my friends sister. I think she is probably 45-50. It came on very suddenly and responded well to steroids but I think she has had one relapse since. hope you manage to get to the bottom of it.

LikeStrawberriesAndCream · 18/09/2025 15:35

Those latest pics look like dyshidrotic eczema (phompholyx). I suffer from this occasionally (and not nearly so severely!) when under stress - it gets the hands and feet.
When I was researching it, I did read about someone who had a v severe case where the blisters turned purple -they're normally like little fluid filled blisters under the skin, which then break out and cause the peeling.
You have my deepest, deepest sympathies if it is this- it's maddeningly itchy/painful - and mine just looks like tiny bumps - so I can't imagine how bad you're feeling...
