AIBU? Sold as seen and I'm not willing to refund?

Hi everyone.

I sold a Nintendo switch on market place yesterday, the switch was fully working in the ad, I checked everything thoroughly and every part of the switch and doc worked.
buyer couldn't get a lift to collect so ended up dropping it to her.
she bank transferred the money to me and has now messaged me to say it's broken and doesn't work? AIBU to tell her it was fully working yesterday so it's now not my problem?
she's borderline harassing me at this point sending me message after message. I've said to her look on YouTube for help to set it up, or perhaps it's her TV that's the issue as the switch is fully working, I even played it for half an hour yesterday before I wiped to factory settings.

AIBU to ignore and block?

Ok, so given the buyer bought the console yesterday and we don't know what time OP (kindly) dropped it off, when should the issue have been reported? Midnight last night?

Christ, you’re a scammers dream!

This has all the signs of a scam. In my case I am a shop so I had to refund for the fake glasses and write it off as a tax loss. With a private sale its caveat emptor.

That's honestly awful!! Why do the scammers always go down 'you ruined her Christmas / birthday' as if that holds any weight??

awful lesson to learn :(

Thanks everyone.

just to confirm a couple of bits, she said she doesn't drive so I offered to drop it to her. I dropped it off and turned the device on. Obviously it wasn't plugged in as I was outside but the handheld device was on and working at factory settings.

I do actually have the serial number, I took a photo of the back of the switch for the add so I actually do have the number, thanks all!!

I think she's a scammer as her boyfriend is also messaging me now. I can either do 2 things, block and delete or change it and go and see the switch with a UV pen. If I do this (and take my brother with me) I will not tell her I'll be bringing the UV pen so she cannot have a chance to break it and swap it for a dud switch.

I think I'm leaving towards blocking as she doesn't j ow where I live, thankfully!
she paid via bank transfer before I handed the device over. i get notifications when money goes in and out so it definitely got paid.

can bank transfers be reversible? That's why I stopped using PayPal F&F!

Bank Transfers are not reversible. She could try claiming it as Authorised push payment fraud but wouldn't have a leg to stand on. The bank, if it's a low amount, may refund her as it's not worth the hassle or find her negligent as she didn't test it herself.
It's a known scam, I would block her and her bf and move on.

NeverEnterFromTheBackDoor · 18/09/2025 11:55

I've asked her (and her beanpole boyfriend who thinks I am evidently threatened) to send me a video of the switch not working, and in the same video zoom in to the serial number on the back.

I've just sent that message now, I'll see their response to that and then will block. At least I've offered to look at it via messenger.

thanks for all the ideas.
the switch was definitely working, it's only 6 months old - it has another 18 months warranty on it and I have given her all that information!!

only sold it as I've got DD a switch 2 for her birthday and combined Christmas present

SO glad I did drop it off now however she has my car and picture as she has a ring doorbell

Change2banon · 18/09/2025 11:55

I’m surprised no one has said this so far - bank transfers are not reversible, however, she can contact her bank and say she’s been scammed, paid money to someone under false pretences. Her bank will then look into it with your bank and refund her the money, not sure if the money may also be taken out of your bank.

Christ, you’re a scammers dream!

Why won't you answer the question? When should the buyer have reported the issue?

I'm not a scammer's dream, I have sold hundreds of higher value items, and have given buyers the benefit of the doubt on the rare occasion there was an issue. I did say upthread that I only sell on eBay though and FB seems more of an actual market i.e. free for all. Nowhere have I said OP should refund them.

That was a good call, OP.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 18/09/2025 12:00

Did it have a serial number and did you keep a note of that? If the answer to this is yes, and you want to be kind, you could go back and check that the one she wants to return is the one you sold her and refund her if it is.

I don't think you have to though.

OP has said there is a serial number and she has noted it.

No idea why people upthread think devices aren't identifiable.

MissMoneyFairy · 18/09/2025 12:09

Great update, let's wait and see what she says, watch her video very carefully to make sure she doesn't switch the two series numbers.

At least the same day.
You can’t seem to acknowledge that the buyer has absolutely no legal recourse here even if it has stopped working. OP isn’t a shop and has absolutely no reason to offer to look at anything or give anybody the benefit of any doubt. That’s the facts of the matter regardless of anything you want to throw in.

IkeaMeatballGravy · 18/09/2025 12:12

It's sad but this is why I never sell to people who need to faff around with lifts or can't commit to a specific pick up time. They are usually the people who either won't turn up or will mess you about.

I would block and ignore.

sydneyr · 18/09/2025 12:13

Sounds like a scammer I had this once with a PlayStation.

it was working perfectly when they got it. I explained I sold it to them working and they should have checked it before handing over the cash. I also explained I had a note of the serial number etc and would be confirming it was the same one.

I never heard from them again.

now when I sell anything that could maybe not work I offer to show them it working

I never drop off to anyone without a deposit but will meet somewhere central and hate people coming to me

Out of curiosity, would you be happy if a shop only gave you one day refund policy? The buyer may have been working or otherwise busy.

And no, I'm not saying OP is shop and I have never said the buyer has legal recourse, I've said that FB is a place where you take your chances.

All I said is that I would check the item and OP has given the buyer an opportunity to demonstrate the issue in a very smart way which gives the buyer the benefit of the doubt but also protects the OP from having to refund in the event of a scam.

PlaceIntheClouds · 18/09/2025 12:16

She has a broken switch and intended to swap them over. She does not know where you live so block her.

I would never sell electric goods on marketplace, vinted or ebay. Sadly there are too many scammers.

I’m so confused with you two here @nomas @Bundleflower .. you both seem to be agreeing the buyer has no legal rights here but yet you’re arguing with each other ?? 😵‍💫😵‍💫

😂

It is a bit mental. Apparently my opinion which is that I would check the item isn't working, is wrong.

I think you've done the right thing. It's great that you have a video of it working too, should it come to her bank looking into you for a scam.

OP checked the item was working and it was on and working when she handed it over. I also agree with the other commenter that offering to go and see the item and see if it’s working or not isn’t a good plan.

Who can say what the right thing to do is ? Anyone would be pretty fucked off if they bought something and it didn't work. I understand it worked when you played it but i personally don't see what she has to gain by lying.

She has a broken switch already and that's the one that will be returned?

You’d be surprised at what people will do for a refund if they’ve changed their minds or decided they couldn’t afford something. I’ve been screwed over by ebay buyers so many times I’d never use the site again.

Yep. I had this on ebay a few years ago with an electrical purchase. I was forced by PayPal to offer a refund on a purchase and pay for its return when the buyer said it wasn’t working. I had made a note of the serial number on the item before sending it as a friend had been caught out the same way and warned me. The item was returned, and was identical to the one I’d sold except for the serial number.

The bank won't necessarily just refund like that with no questions asked...the rules for refunding scam payments are strict and defined
