Hi everyone.

I sold a Nintendo switch on market place yesterday, the switch was fully working in the ad, I checked everything thoroughly and every part of the switch and doc worked.
buyer couldn't get a lift to collect so ended up dropping it to her.
she bank transferred the money to me and has now messaged me to say it's broken and doesn't work? AIBU to tell her it was fully working yesterday so it's now not my problem?
she's borderline harassing me at this point sending me message after message. I've said to her look on YouTube for help to set it up, or perhaps it's her TV that's the issue as the switch is fully working, I even played it for half an hour yesterday before I wiped to factory settings.

AIBU to ignore and block?

My father sold his car through his local garage and they sold it on to another person. This other person got hold of my dad's phone number (he was 92 at the time) and told him the car was a wreck and he wanted his £7000 back. Fortunately my dad is of sound mind and told him to get lost and my brother dealt with the local garage who were horrified the new owner did this. (They'd known my dad for decades)
Nope OP you sold in good faith. Tell her to do one.

OP was kind enough to drop it off to her. The buyer had ample time to check that it worked.

OP has no way of knowing now whether she’ll even receive the same console back, or whether it’ll work if she gets it back. This person’s just chancing their arm.

No one has suggested OP hasn't been kind Confused I'm sure OP is correct that the console was working when she dropped it off.

Given OP only dropped the console off yesterday, I'd give the buyer the benefit of doubt and think maybe they've made a mistake and can't work the console, hence the suggestion to check it.

It's not like they've held onto the console for weeks or even days. So not sure what you mean by 'ample' time.

It's not necessary to jump to the worst possible conclusion straightaway.

No no do not do this OP. You’re opening yourself up to this being your problem. Simply reply and say that she’s been using it no problems since she had it, or she’d have complained sooner, and that whatever happened her end is not your problem or responsibility. You’re not a shop. There’s no warranty offered.

It would help if you read the OP before weighing in my post.

OP only sold the console yesterday. How much sooner did you want the buyer to flag an issue? Confused

I should add that I only sell on eBay, where they would side with the buyer if the buyer said within 24 hour that the item doesn't work, as has happened to OP.

FB marketplace seems to be more of a 'you pays your money and you takes your chances' place.

Netcurtainnelly · 18/09/2025 11:15

Ignore her, it's her problem to sort.
In future take photos/vids of it working before you sell.

Friendlygingercat · 18/09/2025 11:16

This has all the signs of a scam. In my case I am a shop so I had to refund for the fake glasses and write it off as a tax loss. With a private sale its caveat emptor.

Netcurtainnelly · 18/09/2025 11:19

GAJLY · 18/09/2025 10:55

I'd ask her to bring it over so that you could check it's yours and that it's broken.

Bad advice, seller dosent want her knowing her address.

DancingFerret · 18/09/2025 11:19

Scam by the sounds of it (compounded by getting you to deliver to her). I would ignore, block and move on.

Who can say what the right thing to do is ? Anyone would be pretty fucked off if they bought something and it didn't work. I understand it worked when you played it but i personally don't see what she has to gain by lying.

If you want something guaranteed to work, you buy it new from a proper dealer. If you buy second hand, you have to be careful and risk that it won't be like new.

Luxio · 18/09/2025 11:23

I'm really surprised more than one person on this thread thinks this buyer is genuine. This could not have more signs of scam about it if it tried. OP you are completely correct to tell them you will not be refunding and to block this person.

Thelnebriati · 18/09/2025 11:25

Always keep a photo of the serial number of the gadget you sold, its unique to each console and it puts a stop to people scamming you.

I’m not sure why you need the confused face - I wasn’t suggesting that anyone said OP wasn’t being kind in dropping it off.

I’d be very happy to think the worst in this case. It’s very obvious the buyer’s a chancer, and even if she isn’t - caveat emptor. That the buyer didn’t do her due diligence before paying for the item isn’t OP’s problem.

It’s really quite unbelievable. ‘Give them the benefit of the doubt’ - why?

Antimimisti · 18/09/2025 11:33

Scam, scam, scam. Block.

Nurseleaver82 · 18/09/2025 11:34

Go back and collect it, then refund the money and take somewhere else to sell. Don't get drawn in.

Homegrownberries · 18/09/2025 11:36

Scam.

It's becoming shockingly common.

Why? She will give the OP a broken version keep the working one and have the money back and the OP will be left with a broken switch she cannot sell and be out of pocket? Would you honestly do that in the OPs situation?

cauliflowerry · 18/09/2025 11:41

Ablondiebutagoody · 18/09/2025 10:17

Block and ignore. Didn't she test it when you delivered it before doing the bank transfer?

This 👆I am collecting a high chair later today and shall be thoroughly checking it when I collect.

It's a common scam. She will return a broken devise she already had.

there were videos on the add of the device working which were taken and uploaded yesterday. Sold on the same day

You were patronising and told me OP did a kind thing by dropping it off, when I had never suggested she wasn't kind.

You're also conveniently forgetting that you said the buyer had 'ample' time to check the item when actually she only bought the console yesterday.

So I think my use of the confused face was justified.

I'm not sure why you felt the need to be patronising.

romdowa · 18/09/2025 11:46

I'd just block her personally. She's trying it on

Weighing in on your post? Massive apologies, I was under the impression this was a chat forum for things like, you know, discussion.

I already did read the OP but firmly believe it would have been reported sooner if it arrived broken.

NeverEnterFromTheBackDoor · 18/09/2025 11:49

Thanks everyone.

just to confirm a couple of bits, she said she doesn't drive so I offered to drop it to her. I dropped it off and turned the device on. Obviously it wasn't plugged in as I was outside but the handheld device was on and working at factory settings.

I do actually have the serial number, I took a photo of the back of the switch for the add so I actually do have the number, thanks all!!

I think she's a scammer as her boyfriend is also messaging me now. I can either do 2 things, block and delete or change it and go and see the switch with a UV pen. If I do this (and take my brother with me) I will not tell her I'll be bringing the UV pen so she cannot have a chance to break it and swap it for a dud switch.

I think I'm leaving towards blocking as she doesn't j ow where I live, thankfully!
she paid via bank transfer before I handed the device over. i get notifications when money goes in and out so it definitely got paid.

can bank transfers be reversible? That's why I stopped using PayPal F&F!

Ok, so given the buyer bought the console yesterday and we don't know what time OP (kindly) dropped it off, when should the issue have been reported? Midnight last night?
