Is this racist

I am seeing many posts about Charlie Kirk being racist. I also note that there are references to his stance on DEI.

I am interested, is this racist nowadays?

On the topic of DEI he was both racist and stupid.

CapriceDeDieux · 17/09/2025 20:04

@MumoftwoNC A couple of things to consider
You are assuming short is bad? I think the point is that to be short in this case is to be disadvantaged by the fence.

And if they were all white characters would that be better?

I also realised I thought these guys were the same family - like a Dad and two kids, but may that's just me.

Anyway Charlie Kirk was still an avowed racist.

MumoftwoNC · 17/09/2025 20:06

I stand by my opinion. If that little guy struggling to see over the wall is supposed to represent ethnic minorities, then as a non white person my response is "piss off" and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone.

I hadn't even heard of Charlie Kirk until he was murdered so I can't comment on his views, whether he was racist etc.

But I will say that the DEI movement has been losing a lot of momentum and people don't like to try to explain why because they get shouted down, as I have been on this thread for bothering to explain.

People don't like to be patronised, and that invludes ethnic minorities. Being mixed race doesn't make me disabled. We resent being portrayed as a hopeless little guy who needs two boxes to stand on.

Didn't they say young black men helped Trump win the presidency? And everyone was baffled because they hadn't been listening. Just listen rather than shouting me down, if you want to hear people's point of view.

Account734 · 17/09/2025 20:12

Nothing racist in that video. Not sure if the people commenting and voting even watched it. It was Martin Luther King himself that said "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character"

Livelovebehappy · 17/09/2025 20:13

It should always be the best person for the job, otherwise we end up with poor service because we’re focussing more on the colour of someone’s skin, or their gender, rather than their skills.

I think you’re just being contrary tbh. You are obviously aware you don’t speak for all brown people and the image is a very well established and accepted one to explain the value of DEi. If you don’t like it whatever. Don’t try and argue that it shows something it doesn’t though.

The vast majority of jobs have many people perfectly capable of doing them to a high standard. This “best person for the job” is bull shit

Redflagsabounded · 17/09/2025 20:15

Everyone's missing this sneaky little phrase: "I am interested, is this racist nowadays?"

No, it's not racist 'nowadays', opinions like that have always been racist.

It's the classic anti-woke phrase that suggests not wanting racism, sexism, ableism etc etc is some kind of modern madness and you just can't say/do anything 'nowadays'.

CapriceDeDieux · 17/09/2025 20:16

@MumoftwoNC Not shouting you down at all or patronising, just suggeting your interpretation might not be what is intended in the picture and also others saying that your interpretation is not how the image is generally understood (and how I understood it). I think the image is not great, and evidently unclear and open to interpretation and your questioning of it is useful and makes me think a bit. The link I posted was discussion of that.

My work actually about critiquing some of the lazy thinking/practice in institutional EDI (UK) and it's performative mobilisation and very limited benefits in certain sectors, I am no fan of it as an absolute solution to structural racism.

That said in EDI the E is usally equality and in DEI (US) is is equity. My preference is for Equity, which makes CK's position even more excorable in my eyes.

They don’t say that because they didn’t. A small minority of black men voted for Trump. Over 3/4 of the black male vote went to Kamala which was a higher proportion than even Hispanic and white WOMEN.

Hispanic men (alongside white men and white women) were the main groups that delivered Trump the presidency. With the biggest shift being in the Hispanic male vote.

It isn't about being less able. It is about not having the same opportunities in life.

Don't represent that as a short vs a tall person then. Maybe two tall people but one has nice shoes and the other has no shoes, something like that.

With tall and short that's innate. That's basically saying some races are born better, if you use this meme for race. It is BS

It's a metaphor. What you describe is not something you could easily depict.

Most jobs have multiple people capable of doing them.

Years ago my private gynaecologist was an all female practice. At no point did I assume the Ob-gyns would not be qualified because they removed men from consideration in employing gynaecologists.

Not bullshit at all. You’re saying that if someone white who has loads of experience, highly qualified, applies for a job alongside someone of colour, with hardly any experience, then an employer should choose the POC? Don’t you think that’s a bit patronising? I’d want to get the job on merit, not because of the colour of my skin. I’ve seen it happen in my industry, not just on race, but on gender. And it doesn’t end well.

VoodooQualities · 17/09/2025 20:30

Equality vs equity eh?

What I see when I look at that horrible picture is three people still stuck on the outside looking in, regardless of how you stack the boxes.

Also someone has to pay for the boxes. I wouldn't mind paying for the boxes I suppose but I'd rather they could just buy a damn ticket and get in through the gate like you and I can.

CapriceDeDieux · 17/09/2025 20:32

@Gladysknightgottogetaholdofmyself I think it's part of concerted efforts to make rascist and facist views normalised. They keep coming up as "it's just his opinion" "he has a right to say it", lots of people think it, freedom of speech, we won't be silenced etc. It is pushing at the boundaries of social norms/the social contract, acceptable discourse and, actually, the law.

I read an interesting article on it recently - https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/09579265221095406 and there is a book I want to read here https://academic.oup.com/book/57946

Also this: https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/europpblog/2025/01/08/how-the-normalisation-of-the-radical-right-has-fuelled-their-electoral-success/

There is probably an article in the normalisation of far right and racist rhetoric on social media platforms such as Mumsnet: How 'Plop and run' posting moved a parenting platform to the right (or something)

sorry to post just links - they are all safe!
