To think that the worst part of growing up is realising that most TV is actually shitely done

I cant think of many programmes that are just well done all the way through

Most of them give GCSE drama - i swear I could write a better plot myself

People cling on to The Wire and Breaking Bad as most shows are just a mess (here's looking at you the last two seasons of Game of Thrones 🙄, and current Eastenders)

When i was a kid, in the 90s, I remember thinking that TV was so good! X Factor felt real, Eastenders was cracking, Bad Girls was super good.

Is it worse now (YANBU) or is this just adulthood (YABU)?

Youre all being unreasonable for leaving me hanging 😭🙈

blubberball · 16/09/2025 16:47

If you watch it back now, you would find some bad TV from the 90s. Especially EastEnders. Some stuff is very well done. I fought the law with Sheridan Smith was really good

DustyMaiden · 16/09/2025 16:51

You are spoilt now, so much to choose from. Trouble is we’ve seen it all before.

I love Severance on Apple TV, but it is pretty heavy (especially in season two). I also like Only Murders in the Building

The13thFairy · 16/09/2025 17:16

Are you on drugs? If shite TV is the worst thing that happened to you growing up, your life has been blessed. I hope it keeps fine for you.

CarpetKnees · 16/09/2025 17:25

I can think of many, many things about being an adult, that are worse then thinking TV might not be well made Hmm

Quitelikeit · 16/09/2025 17:27

Yabu

i couldn’t get her up over this 😂😂

PuppyMonkey · 16/09/2025 17:27

If you’re clinging onto X Factor as some sort of benchmark of excellence, you’re doing something wrong.

There are numerous current TV programmes that are excellent, you’re obviously just missing them because you’re still watching EastEnders.Grin

Succession
Severance
The Bear
Slow Horses
The Four Seasons
White Lotus
Day of the Jackal

We’re in a golden age of telly imho.

PullingOutHair123 · 16/09/2025 17:27

There are so many repeats and the rest feels like its reality tv.

There are some good things around - but it takes effort to find them as there are so many places to look. Most of the time I can't be bothered, and find a film to watch. It's just easier!

When there were only 3/4/5 TV stations to look through, it was much easier to find the good stuff.

TheOtherAgentJohnson · 16/09/2025 17:29

Oddly hyperbolic thread title, but you’re not wrong about 90% of tv being shite - 90% of everything is shite.

I do think that British screenwriters on the whole are singularly bad at writing naturalistic dialogue though.

DaisyBeatrice · 16/09/2025 17:30

A lot of it is far too stress-inducing nowadays. With too much suspenseful, dramatic music. I don't like TV that has a physical effect on me. It's not entertainment.

I miss Dallas!

nomas · 16/09/2025 17:35

I think to an extent we only had 5 channels so
less choice and people watched TV together so it felt like more of a viewing experience. Plus you have to wait for your show every week which made it more exciting.

I love having all the choice today.

Yes, thats what has happened here.

I have taken drugs and decided to utilise my high by coming to have a moan about TV being shite these days.

I dont like all of the TV murder dramas being based on a true story - makes them more depressing 😒😒

😭😭 i don't know who id be without hyperbole!

Agree everything is just shiter these days - although i know there is another thread running on that

I just feel like everything i watch is a chore and I have to work to focus on it - im rarely ever captured, but when I was a kid, it was mostly good

🙈 I loved x Factor - i'd be glued to the TV on a saturday night

Saturday night telly is shite now - strictly is back soon but i'm kind of over that too

😭😭 eastenders is a part of life, like taking a shower - me and dd have both watched it our whole lives

The bear is good so fat
Severence season 2 was shite though - that's what i mean, you might have a good start but then it gets shite

No, most of everything has always been shite, we just selectively remember the good stuff.

Its true

And it was nice having the omnibuses on a Sunday - just the one repeat

And the reality tv is getting worse and so staged as well 😒😒

They always run for too long, no story can sustain that kind of epic timespan without resorting to padding, repetition, or both.

Soap operas also reboot the characters every few story cycles, completely changing their personalities so they can start an apparently new story with them.
