I have NC'd for this. A friend of mine NEVER has to pay for work on her house...she has a family member who is high up in a business and so all of the work is put through the business. She says they are doing the jobs as favours! surely this is fraud! do i stay out of it or say something (who do i even report to!!)She currentky has a landscper in doing the garden...just so happens to be the landscaper who does the work for said business!

Jealousy is not a favourable personality trait. If the staff are getting paid the going rate, why do you care who is funding them?

xxxwd · 16/09/2025 09:24

Go for a walk or read a book or something.

RosaMundi27 · 16/09/2025 09:25

Mind your own business.
And stop calling yourself her friend - you've just proved that you're not.

Woodworm2020 · 16/09/2025 09:26

It may be that the work is happening at your friends when the business is quiet so the employees are being redeployed to keep them working? As long as the people carrying out the work are getting paid I don’t get why this is an issue. What am I missing?
Why does it bother you OP?

ObtuseMoose · 16/09/2025 09:26

Wind your neck in love.

KoiTetra · 16/09/2025 09:27

Why would that be fraud? Have you ever helped out a friend and not expected payment for anything? This is the same thing but on a larger scale.

A company is allowed to charge whatever they want including nothing for a job if they choose to do so.

Megifer · 16/09/2025 09:27

A good starting point would be to examine why this bothers you.

Katemax82 · 16/09/2025 09:28

Report it to the ministry of nosey parkers

ChaToilLeam · 16/09/2025 09:28

You sound envious. Keep your beak out!

Buddingbudde · 16/09/2025 09:29

because she is not paying for it...a business is having their books cooked!!

Presumably the people doing the work are being paid by the business and any materials are being bought by the business? I'm not sure how it's fraud, I would have thought they can charge whatever they like for the work done, or nothing. What do you think is illegal?

well they are not charging her but they are charging the company under the guise of work carried out there...

A business can do work without charging for any reason the like. If a roofing company fixes a charity’s rooof for free is that fraud? No. This isn’t either.

What do you mean? This makes no sense.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 16/09/2025 09:32

No, I'd mind your nose.
It's one of the few benefits of being self-employed as long as they cover their ass.
Are you saying that they are stealing? Or are they buying materials through the company with VAT reduction?

spicetails · 16/09/2025 09:32

How is it fraud?

Topjoe19 · 16/09/2025 09:33

Have a word with yourself!

Buddingbudde · 16/09/2025 09:33

It could be fraud if the company put the costs of materials etc through the books as a deduction and there were no benefit whatsoever to the company for doing the work, but there is usually the development of young employees skills and goodwill / advertising to carrying out works for free by a company.

You have absolutely no idea if that is the case. An if the relative owns the company he can do free work if he wants.
You say she is a friend but you want to shaft her and her relative, with friends like you who needs enemies.

I think what OP means is if the said landscaping company is doing 5k worth of work for the business and 1k worth of work for her friend…then they charge the business 6k?

Motomum23 · 16/09/2025 09:34

Sorry but its not fraud. Its far better for a business with salaries employees to keep those employees working even for no payment than it is to have them sitting idle. For it to be fraud she would have to be claiming to pay them in order to recoup something but as its a personal property its not like she's claiming grants etc to fix it.

spicetails · 16/09/2025 09:34

doitellthem · 16/09/2025 09:30

Companies do pro bono work all the time - the cost of the labour and material to the company is then a tax write off. There’s nothing fraudulent about it.

doitellthem · 16/09/2025 09:29

How could you possibly know this? There is no reason at all to cook any books or commit any fraud. Businesses can do any work they like for whatever cost they want. The only way books would be cooked is if they were taking in money from somewhere else to cover the costs, but there is no evidence of that happening. Presumably the business is doing well enough that they can forego a bit of profit for a family member.

And to echo others, she's really not your friend if you're trying to get her into trouble.
