To think Keir Starmer is toast as soon as the state visit is over

Just that really. If it wasn't for the visit he'd probably be gone already.

That's not correct. Anyone can launch a leadership challenge (or challenge any other sitting national officer) with nominations from 20% of the parliamentary party.

Thanks. I wasn’t aware of that. It makes his position less safe. Who would people prefer? I can only see Wes Streeting or Shabana Mahmood as strong enough to govern. But it’s difficult to know who the backbenchers would go for. I doubt it will happen before May

It makes his position far safer than that of a conservative leader. There is no mechanism for a vote of no confidence in the labour party - the 20% actually need to back a challenger. Contrast with the conservative party which only require 15% to trigger a vote of no confidence with no challengers.

I remember watching some documentary on the Tories once.

Apparently a lot of their success is down to being ruthless about seeking and maintaining power.

If they think a PM is compromising the future success party there are mechanisms to get rid of them quickly and the party does not hesitate to act. See Truss.

I don't think Labour have the same mechanisms which in some respects may be a strength and in others a weakness.

A lot of the Tories historic success was down to rigid party discipline. They abandoned this when they elected a clown for PM and the party has been in freefall ever since. Unfortunately for them, the wider party (who vote leaders in) and the parliamentary party (who vote leaders out) might as well be two completely different parties.

Upstartled · 16/09/2025 14:37

No, he'll hang on in there, even while the backbenchers queue up to stick the knife in. Will be interesting to see another re-set and phase three next week though.

The wheels won't start to come off until after the autumn budget. Then I reckon Reeves will fall and Starmer will be exposed ready for the inevitable shit-show of the May elections.

Gone how? The Labour Party have different leadership processes to the Tories and they definitely don't have a 1922 Committee!!!!! They have a rule book and a National Executive responsible for all of that kind of stuff and it doesn't include just getting rid of a leader like the Tories do.

The Parliamentary Labour Party tried very hard to remove Corbyn from the leadership of the party and were unable to do so. He only resigned after the party’s worst ever electoral defeat.

So removing Starmer won’t easily happen, unless he himself resigns like Harold Wilson did.

Don't forget Labour have only had one year in power. They have some catching up to do.

What a miserable farce. That our current political figures are not judged on their own dismal behaviour, but on the fact that it may have been less worse than someone elses.

Maybe we can compare our current crop of politicians to Ivan the Terrible or Genghis Khan. Maybe they aren't that bad after all !

Actually, that’s a reasonable point. I’m extremely disappointed about the Mandelson debacle.

@Bumblebee72 In effect he did work for the Civil Service as DPP. He was better suited to that and had a HR department!

Yeap. Peter Principal. Everyone gets promoted to their level of incompetence.

Anyone remember the days of Ian Blackford parroting "resign Prime Minister" at Boris in the House of Commons? We need him back to parrot at Starmer.

He was an extremely competent DPP. The skill set required to be a successful PM's completely different.

Nestingbirds · 17/09/2025 13:09

The issue is who could be his replacement? The only person I can think of with any chance whatsoever would be Wes Streeting. Whom is respected both sides of the house.

If a PM s respected by the opposition they’re not doing their job properly.

TizerorFizz · 17/09/2025 14:58

@BlossomtoesYes, it’s different. He’s lacking political nous. He functions like a civil servant but without a deep understanding of politics or consequences of actions. Probably too trusting.

Going to be tough the next four years then.

Ah, but being disrespected by the opposition doesn’t equate to doing the job properly. You’re applying false equivalence there.
