Supermarket accidentally delivered an extra bag wants me to store the contents for 4 days aibu

I had an Iceland delivery on Sunday morning quite a lot of stuff so never noticed extra bag( though it did have my name and order number on it ).
I emailed customer service just to let them know in case they wanted to send driver back to collect it , driver was lovely and hated idea of him getting into trouble for the mix up .
They emailed me yesterday asking for a list of items in the bag , it was mainly bread items a loaf , baguettes, rolls , muffins , a 6 pack of hula hoops and a pack of noodles so all in all not an expensive shop probably around £12/15 in total .
i did offer to drop it back to my local store . Anyways they have finally replied now asking for me to be in on Wednesday so they can collect , Aibu to be a bit irked at this ? My flats tiny and although only two bags that’s two bags taking up space in my kitchen that I need to keep kids away from as well as the dogs .
would I be unreasonable to email requesting them to collect sooner or to let me donate the items to local food bank ? Tia

Originally one bag but I’ve put it in two as it was bursting at seems 😂.
Yeah that’s the strangest part the breads best before is Wednesday ironically .
I’m going to email saying as much surely letting me donate to food bank is better than it going to waste they can’t possible sell it surely .

I wish I had just left it I just felt bad for the driver/picker .

Just send one email saying that it'll be left on the doorstep and they can collect when ever. Stop engaging to and fro and ignore any subsequent emails.

Rewis · 16/09/2025 06:34

I can't believe they are coming to pick it up. Well, you know not to tell them next time. If it was home anyway I wouldn't mind the pick up (wfh, so if it was office hours). But I would not be making time to return the stuff.

I don’t understand you tbh:

in you message you clearly say “no worries at all it’s no inconvenience for me…I have kept the items separate in case you want to collect them”

Now you’re surprised that they want to collect the items which you offered? And now you’re saying how inconvenient it is to store the items?

you’re telling Iceland one thing, and mumsnet the opposite. You’re misleading someone here.

I said this on Sunday when I assumed they would collect straight away , it’s not a major inconvenience keeping it separate just annoying having to keep kids and dogs away from it .

Its the having to be in for them to collect it that’s majorly inconvenient I have told them this and also asked if they can narrow down a time frame which they can’t .

Seems an odd decision from them as the bread will likely be getting stale by then, if not already.
Say you won't be in Wednesday and that you'll donate to a good bank and then do that.
You tried to do the right thing, food bank will be happy, Iceland can cope financially. I'd be very surprised if they are weird about it since you've decided to donate it.
Let us know what they say though!

Because you offered the collection, they took you up on it. if you were clear about a collection or storage being inconvenient upfront, they likely wouldn’t bother to collect it.

They’re not going to resell the food, they’re going to write it off or give it to the staff/driver on the sly. Truthfully most staff aren’t going to want the food if it’s been in a customer’s home all weekend, so they’re probably going to dispose of it.

Evidemment · 16/09/2025 21:04

I'm sorry to say it OP but you seem to have some pretty extreme people pleasing tendencies going on here - why on earth would you offer to pay for items you haven't ordered which were delivered to you in error??

angela1952 · 16/09/2025 21:32

SpiralSpiritSocks · 15/09/2025 21:39

I’m really surprised.

I’ve had additional items delivered at various times by Asda, Tescos and Sainsburys. I always let them know and they all said please keep the items for free as they aren’t allowed to take them back once they’ve been in my home for any length of time.

Yes, this is what I'd expect. I shop with Ocado and if I return an unwanted substitute they sometimes say why don't you keep it as anything fresh is actually thrown away.

BunnyLake · 16/09/2025 21:39

I’ve never known any supermarket to want mistakenly delivered (perishable) items back. How would they know they hadn’t been tampered with? They couldn’t resell or even pass them back to the rightful owner after being in someone else’s house for days. Sounds a very strange set up from Iceland. I’d be writing to their HO about this.

I definitely do , and this has been an eye opener. For context I was in a very bad relationship for a very long time and it’s only the last few years since I left him , I have even so much as made a friend .

I'm terrible socially and definitely try to appease everyone , but I am working on it 🙈.

This has given me a whole new outlook. I hope they don’t sell any of it. They have no idea who you are. You could do anything to it. It’s also a major inconvenience them choosing a different day to collect. We get deliveries to get rid of stress not add to it. They should of just given it to you.

OnTheBoardwalk · 16/09/2025 22:02

Someone in an Ocado shop got my fish fingers I was gutted (shared crate for frozen items) I got told they would have been told to keep the fishfingers if they phoned Ocado, I got a refund and £10 credit

seems very strange that Iceland would want the food back. Agree with PP mail them back and say goods will be in lobby or outside your door. Up to them how they get them back

I don't understand why you emailed them. I wouldn't have bothered. It had your name on it. They obviously aren't going to deliver the same stuff to their cust because it'll be mostly stale.
I got a whoosh delivery while I was recovering from surgery & got the wrong stuff. I did tell them & they just refunded me, gave me fiver voucher & keep the stuff, an enormous of mozzarella in all it's forms & a box of maltesers.

Shopaholic100 · 17/09/2025 00:06

Disgusting, as a person with allergies this has definitely put me off ordering from Iceland. They should have just let you keep it, how stingy.

BunnyLake · 17/09/2025 08:03

GameWheelsAlarm · 15/09/2025 23:38

Iceland is being unreasonable here. Any other supermarket would be telling you to keep it. Any responsible retailer would not dream of reselling groceries that have been in your home of 3 days when they have no idea what temperature or humidity or hygiene conditions you keep. Who wants to buy 4 day old bread rather than fresh??

Mistakes happen. It's not your fault. You shouldn't have to deal. I doubt the delivery driver will e in massive trouble unless he does this way more than average. I doubt they have any drivers who are perfect and never make mistakes.

It’s not the delivery driver’s fault anyway. He doesn’t pack the bags (she said it had her name on).

I’ve had Iceland deliveries and the bags are not named. I don’t know what branch is used for you but they behave very strangely in comparison to my one.

ParanoidGynodroid · 17/09/2025 08:26

I've had several bags of shopping delivered in error to me, and once a whole big shop! (Teenage DD took in the shop so didn't realise it wasn't ours. She froze the fresh meats and then made herself lunch!)

I phoned first time and they said to keep it. Second time was on hold for ages, so gave up.
After that I just didn't bother.

OP, Email them to say you're chucking it by the end of the day. I agree with others that they're only collecting because they think that's what you want.

And Jeez, do not EVER offer to pay for a huge company's mistake again, that's utterly bonkers (sorry!)

Islandgirl68 · 17/09/2025 11:20

@Justmeeeindie that seems very strange, they cannot put that food back on the shelves now as they don't know if it has been stored safely or been contaminated in any other way. So they will just have to throw it out, they have inconvenience d you so they should just let you keep it.

BunnyLake · 17/09/2025 12:32

Lesson learnt OP. If Iceland ever do this again don’t bother telling them about it. No other supermarket behaves this way.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/09/2025 12:54

Was it one bag or two @Justmeeeindie

you say you didn’t spot the bag till later. Then said you don’t have room for 2 bags

Cailleach1 · 18/09/2025 15:03

I was gutted when I had a lovely Fortnum & Mason delivery, only to discover it was not ordered by my OH. I rang them up to tell them it was a mistake. The b&ggers came back the next day to collect it. All the food and drink was in my keep for a day (sob), and had a good shelf life. Taunting me from the hallway.

I did think afterwards though that anyone could have doctored or tampered with something, and the shop or customer would have been none the wiser. Chain of custody was lost, sort of thing.

Ah well. Somebody had a lovely treat.

I certainly wouldn’t offer to pay for something which they mistakenly put through your door, op. Shelf life alone for things you hadn’t planned would leave you on the back foot. Maybe out of pocket for food which is on the turn or stale.

Laserwho · 18/09/2025 15:22

Did they pick it up,?

It was in one bag I noticed it straight away when unpacking mainly as it was duplicate of bread I had already ordered 🙈 , I did separate it into two after checking and sending them list though .

An hour before they arrive, tell them there was a substitution or two, and swap some of the items for something really random…

Funniest post on mumsnet this year. Brilliant!
