Supermarket accidentally delivered an extra bag wants me to store the contents for 4 days aibu

Justmeeeindie · 15/09/2025 21:30

I had an Iceland delivery on Sunday morning quite a lot of stuff so never noticed extra bag( though it did have my name and order number on it ).
I emailed customer service just to let them know in case they wanted to send driver back to collect it , driver was lovely and hated idea of him getting into trouble for the mix up .
They emailed me yesterday asking for a list of items in the bag , it was mainly bread items a loaf , baguettes, rolls , muffins , a 6 pack of hula hoops and a pack of noodles so all in all not an expensive shop probably around £12/15 in total .
i did offer to drop it back to my local store . Anyways they have finally replied now asking for me to be in on Wednesday so they can collect , Aibu to be a bit irked at this ? My flats tiny and although only two bags that’s two bags taking up space in my kitchen that I need to keep kids away from as well as the dogs .
would I be unreasonable to email requesting them to collect sooner or to let me donate the items to local food bank ? Tia

Collect all of the information.

Raise a complaint- in full and copy in trading standards if possible.

  • You expected them to come and pick it up straight away
  • You can't gurantee appropriate cold storage
  • The bag was lableld incorrectly
  • Their solution compromises their quality and cold storage.
  • This has greatly affected your trust in Iceland as fair trader.

What you want them to do

  • Write off the food
  • Provide you with assurance that an investigation of labeling and packaging at this branch as been reviewed.
  • Provide you with assurance that they are overseeing the distributions as food and a copy of their policy.
  • Apology for the customer service

Bloody hell. Why would she create even MORE work for herself. It’s a bag of bloody bread. Just forget about it

Goldbar · 15/09/2025 23:27

At this point in time, I'd tell them that the bag will be left on your doorstep on Wednesday because you are working. Then I'd leave it outside your front door with a sign "Iceland items delivered in error for return" and email them a picture of the bag and sign. It's up to them whether they can gain access to the building or not through someone else letting them in.

NoSoapJustUseShowerGel · 15/09/2025 23:28

Just say you’ll be out at work all day on Wednesday and they’ll have to take the very small financial hit. It’s their error, you owe them nothing, least of all being inconvenienced.

I mean it’s not customer service it’s just easiest for everyone. Why would they waste time and money to collect food just to bin it - which they legally have to?

Op I think someone is having a laugh at your expense. And I can’t believe you listed all the items with the quantity!

Edited

I can’t believe I did either reading it back it’s all so absurd , I had just assumed they wanted a list to double check with the person who was missing items , I wonder if they are intending on checking bag contents on Wednesday , make sure I didn’t pinch anything 🙈

Originally one bag but I’ve put it in two as it was bursting at seems 😂.
Yeah that’s the strangest part the breads best before is Wednesday ironically .
I’m going to email saying as much surely letting me donate to food bank is better than it going to waste they can’t possible sell it surely .

I wish I had just left it I just felt bad for the driver/picker .

Food banks don't generally collect fresh food.
If you can go to where they distribute it from they may have a tray of fresh food that clients can pick from.
A food hub may be a better option.

Or just eat it.

user1492757084 · 15/09/2025 23:30

They will throw the food out. Contact them once more.

Tell them the extra food has been eaten by your Labrador so there is nothing left to pick up.
Then donate to local food bank.

YABU, it’s Tuesday tomorrow, I’m sure you can find somewhere to keep some bread and noodles for a few days. Doesn’t have to be in the kitchen.

I don't think that's the point really..they are asking her to be available for them to collect on Wednesday ..if she's a full time working mum like myself there's no way if be available unless they came at 6pm ..I'm not booking off work or holding back on my plans for a mistake they've made and neither should she. The whole point in getting a delivery (and paying extra) is for the convenience,.it'd have been less stressful to go the shop. Personally I'd have kept it and said nothing, unless it was added to my bill

I think she has wasted enough of her time trying to deal with them already

MiserableMillie · 15/09/2025 23:34

This is so strange. Something similar happened to me once, an Ocado driver dropped an extra bag with me. I live on a development with loads of flats, he'd mentioned delivering to a neighbour before me so I assumed it was theirs. I asked in our residents' group if anyone was missing it but no joy. I called Ocado in case they could tell me who it was supposed to be for, and they told me they couldn't take it back so just keep it.

I live alone and there was loads of stuff I could never use all of, giant jars of baking ingredients etc. I gave some to my neighbours and some to the food bank.

For gods sake, eat the muffins before they go off!

Unicornsandprincesses · 15/09/2025 23:23

An hour before they arrive, tell them there was a substitution or two, and swap some of the items for something really random…

🤣🤣🤣

GameWheelsAlarm · 15/09/2025 23:38

Iceland is being unreasonable here. Any other supermarket would be telling you to keep it. Any responsible retailer would not dream of reselling groceries that have been in your home of 3 days when they have no idea what temperature or humidity or hygiene conditions you keep. Who wants to buy 4 day old bread rather than fresh??

Mistakes happen. It's not your fault. You shouldn't have to deal. I doubt the delivery driver will e in massive trouble unless he does this way more than average. I doubt they have any drivers who are perfect and never make mistakes.

Kids would defiantly agree with the muffins being eaten .

I’ve emailed them asked them what they intend to do with the contents as they can’t sell them on now , and told them I can’t guarantee availability on Wednesday, so either tell me exact time frame or I will keep /donate the items .

when I emailed them originally I was just expecting an email back acknowledging it and telling me to keep or bin them 🤯

Eeww I'm not ordering from Iceland. I don't want food that's been in someone else's house!! Someone send them this thread.

Good grief. I've seen a lot of over the top replies on MN but that takes the biscuit 😆

This cannot be true?! Why would they want to collect stale food?

I find it very hard to believe...

Worst part is I’ve had this happen before , last time was about 7/8 years ago just before Christmas they delivered complete wrong order and customer service had me store someone else’s full shop till the Next day it was all fresh/frozen stuff no idea what they did with it but fact they even asked me to store it all then collected it is worrying . They brought my stuff the next day when they collected and now looking back I’m wondering if they asked someone to store that in there house till the next day 😬

I wish it wasn’t true , I let them know out of courtesy didn’t expect them to want it back , so much hassle for them and me over effectively a bag of bread .

This is why nice things don't happen to me..

OP, you should WhatsApp them rather than email and you might get a more sensible response.

Grumpyrager · 16/09/2025 00:05

I’d call them back. They can’t re sell food that’s been in your house for several days - totally unacceptable.

the person who told you this sounds like an idiot. Firstly expecting you to wait in, secondly collecting food that could be off or spoiled in some way. Dereanged. They should either let you keep it or donate it.

Rkin33 · 16/09/2025 00:28

Bin it, bin it, bin it. Safest all round. Iceland can't possibly expect to re-use this stuff. THEY are responsible for whatever happens to it, they don't know a thing about you, you could have injected it with rat poison for all they know or care. They can't just lump their duty of care onto you.

RawBloomers · 16/09/2025 01:05

I would just say “No. I can’t wait in at your convenience. I will be in tonight between X and X if you want to send someone. Otherwise, since the goods are perishable, I will be disposing of them tomorrow morning.”

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/09/2025 01:15

Very strange as going to be stale so can’t sell it

then again

most shops can’t resell food from a customer as don’t know what they have done with it

why they didn’t say keep it is beyond me

Friendlygingercat · 16/09/2025 01:20

This happened to me a while back with Tesco. I was in a hurry and the shopping back then was delivered in bags, not trays. I discovered after the driver had gone there were a few items not mine. When I rang Tesco they told me to either discard them or keep them. They could not resell them or send the driver back. Since then I have found the odd item that that I did not order. And sometimes an item I ordered has not turned up. If its an expensive item (like a bottle of wine) I ring customer services and they always give me a voucher. Otherwise I dont bother. It rarely happens now.

ChangingWeight · 16/09/2025 02:22

Justmeeeindie · 15/09/2025 21:58

It’s crazy the breads best before date is Wednesday and the muffins and rolls etc will definitely be stale by Wednesday .

I don’t understand you tbh:

in you message you clearly say “no worries at all it’s no inconvenience for me…I have kept the items separate in case you want to collect them”

Now you’re surprised that they want to collect the items which you offered? And now you’re saying how inconvenient it is to store the items?

you’re telling Iceland one thing, and mumsnet the opposite. You’re misleading someone here.
